Mary Jane McGinnis is Dallas' own Jill of all trades. If it was there to do, she has done it with enthusiasm and Southern charm. She has served several terms on the board of directors, has

written our Score Card article for years, and chaired several sectional tournaments. If you want a great party, MJ is your go-to per-son. She has been at the helm of the unit Christmas party and has made it an event – from the wonderful food, to the exciting door prizes and to her own specially-designed contribution boxes – she does it all. Mary Jane is our steel magnolia, and we are proud to honor her with this year's Texas Star Award.

Goodwill Award Unit 176 What makes Vi stand out is her willing-ness to always help. She recently served on the Unit 176 Board. While on the board, she took on many duties including coordinating club visitations by the board and new unit member welcome letters. Even more im-pressive is the fact that she kept these du-ties for a couple of years following her term on the board. Coordinating club visitations can be a complicated task. Welcoming new members is a constant task. Each month Unit 176 welcomes between 9 and 15 new members. Did you know we greet each new member and transferee into the unit with a letter and a Unit Game free play? Vi not only is a per-son behind the scene, she is frequently present at the bridge table, always smiling and friendly. Unit 176 is proud to award Vi Ganeles the Goodwill Award. Well Deserved Retirement:

After 13 years of operating her own bridge stu-dio in Richardson, Dorsey Shaw sold her studio in January to Jim Harp. She wants to enjoy the pleasure of playing bridge with her friends with-out all the responsibilities of club ownership. She will have more time to travel to visit her children as well as take some days off to do whatever strikes her fancy. The best thing is that we all get to see her around the tables since she isn’t moving to a place with warmer weather like Florida or Aruba.

McKinney DBC’s 7th Anniversary On Thursday September 19, 2019, the McKinney Duplicate Bridge Club celebrated its 7th year anniversary. We celebrated with a free play day and free anniversary cake com-plete with balloons! Our club had plenty to celebrate. Our membership has continued to grow reaching 156 members in 2019. The club has expanded to two well attended games per week and in 2019, according to ACBL, we had a total of 1,019 tables. ACBL also indicates we are ranked 515 in North America club size. We hope to continue growing by offering a friendly well managed game. Guests are always welcome. ~reported by John Harrelson

A Game for the Record Books

We all play bridge looking for that game that really clicks. On Thursday Septem-ber 10, 2019 Adrianne Feuer and Jack Rollier had such a game. They accomplished a 76.39% game which is the highest game we have record-ed in our McKinney game. Congratulations to Adrianne and Jack! ~reported by John Harrelson

Bridge Superstar! Bob Bender achieved the level of Bronze Life Master in August 2019. Let’s flashback to how it all started at the University of Delaware during the late 1960's. He played a lot of bridge, but he was also on the Tennis team. It is amazing that he found time to study. But, he did and graduated from the University of Delaware in 1970. Due to attending graduate school and raising a family he did not play any bridge for the next 47 years. In 2017 he found bridge again. He took beginner les-sons at BAND and played at Dorsey’s. He read many bridge books, took lessons, and played a lot of bridge. Needless to say, he came back to the game with a venge-

ance. He eventually added playing at the McKinney Du-

plicate Bridge Club where we have adopted him. He won the Mini-McKinney and the Ace of Clubs for his point level in 2017, 2018, and 2019. He became a Life Master in November 2018 and a Bronze Life Master in August 2019. Bob commented that "he is not yet a strong player, but he is getting better". I would say he qualifies as a strong player. Bob shared finding bridge was like "finding something wonderful that had been lost". He enjoys the mental challenge of playing bridge and also making new friends. He also feels the key to playing good bridge is having great partners and men-tors. Congratulations to Bob for his successful return to Bridge! ~reported by John Harrelson

Random Thoughts that Popped into My Mind If my body is ever found on a jogging trail; just

know that I was murdered somewhere else and dumped there.

I’ve decided I’m not old, I’m 25….plus shipping & handling.

In my defense, I WAS left unsupervised.

MDBC Makes a Difference

In December 2019 the McKinney Duplicate Bridge Club made a $1000 donation to the McKin-ney Salvation Army. This donation was to help in the Salvation Army's partnership with a local group to

sponsor the "HOMELESS WARM SHELTER" program. When the tem-perature dips below freezing, the Salvation Army will open its gymna-sium doors to provide a meal and will house the homeless for the night. The McKinney Salvation Army continues to do an excellent job in supporting our Bridge games. We value our relationship with them.

There were 1,266.51 master points won by 291 players

at 288 tables. About ten Unit 176 players won points at

this tournament.

Austin College Bridge Class Picture to the right:

Truett Cates, second from the right, requires his students to play at bridge clubs as part of their course credit require-ments. They are pictured at McKinney DBC with Ray Nel-son, white shirt front row, President of MDBC. For more information about this amazing effort to bring younger people into the bridge playing world, see article “Young Blood” on page 9.

YOUNG BLOOD A girl with pink hair, a boy with pink hair, a pre-med student, a chiseled muscular 320 pound football player; this is a cross section of an Austin College class learning to play bridge for college credit (I can only dream of any color hair). Oh, to be a Freshman in college again. So many of us rabid bridge players are always bemoaning the lack of young bridge players in our games. We have Dr. Truett Cates to thank for originating a college class at Austin College, located in Sher-man, Tx, to help pump Young Blood into our bridge arena. Truett, as he has his students call him, designed this class way back in 1994. Dr. Cates has taught this almost every year since, except for 5 or 6 years when he took a sabbatical from teaching. During those years, our dear departed friend Charlie Price, pinch hit for him. Literally hundreds of young folks have been introduced to this marvelous game. The class is currently offered during Jan term. Just in the month of January, Austin College offers students the chance to take one class compressed into an accelerated schedule whereby students can complete the entire course for four semester hours in a single month. The current class has 17 students, and they meet daily for a one hour lecture and two plus hours of supervised play. They also are assigned 3 labs which include 15-18 hands that point out proper tech-niques of bidding and playing. Unfortunately, of course there are tests, three of them. I’ve been told many of us would find these tests difficult to pass. The course fees include ACBL membership, the first three Audrey Grant books from her teaching series along with special decks of cards for staging demo hands. Perhaps the highlight of the class is taking to the road to play in sanctioned games in several of our local clubs. They played club games at Harp’s and McKinney bridge clubs, two sessions at the NLM tournament in Denton, and my favorite, a “Pro Am” session (I use the Pro term rather liberally) at Harp’s. The students were anxious at first, but gained confidence as the game progressed. After playing a difficult 5C game to perfection, the glee on Gabe’s face was priceless. Gabe was my “rookie”.

I would like to make a special call out to Dr. Cates for doing so much to enrich our beloved game. In addition, several members of our Unit have been very instrumental in helping to grow our game. Jim and Cheryl Rider did an outstanding job promoting and co-chairing last year’s extremely successful I/N Regional and will be chairing the I/N Regional in November. Ed Yetter does a fantastic job of scheduling and arrang-ing these tournaments along with making sure the funds are available to put them on. Stu Nelan and Robbie Ogle do so much on the I/N committee to help make the game more attractive for our newer play-ers. Jim, Stu, and Robbie are all on the Board of Directors, and Ed serves as a non voting member, but he probably is one of the hardest workers in Unit 176. Lastly, Donna Compton has done an unbelievable job of recruiting newcomers. The gist of this story is trying to keep our game viable. It is incumbent on all of us to recruit newcom-ers, particularly Young Blood. Scour the highways and gutters, get your friends, kids and grandchildren interested to keep this game going for future generations. ~ reported by Rich Brandenburg

We have a couple of new items this year. One is a special offer for new players with 0-5 master points. Play 5 club games and earn a free play (up to $10). This isn’t actually new, since it has been done before, but we are bringing it back. For more information contact Robbie Ogle ([email protected]). Something that is new for us is an Ambassador Program for the Labor Day Regional. The idea is that anyone who shows up is guaranteed a partner. Players who volunteer as ambassadors for a specific day and time will receive two free plays, even if they are not needed to play. If you want to volunteer as an ambassador, or just get more information, contact Stu Nelan ([email protected]). GNT qualifiers continue through March. Only flights B and C need qualify for the district. A club qualifier is one or two sessions. For more information contact Scott Nason ([email protected]) or Stu Nelan ([email protected]). The Dallas Spring Sectional is scheduled for March 12-15. As usual the venue is the Richardson Civic Center, and we follow the same event format we have used in the past. We hope to see you there. ~ Joe Gill

Dallas Labor Day Regional Ambassador Program The Dallas Labor Day Regional (Sep 1-7) will be here soon, and we are already preparing for it! Ed Yetter and Sheri Gautier are the Co-Chairs for the Tournament, and Stu Nelan is the Partnership Chair. We are establishing an Ambassador Program for the Regional. This program will provide a local volunteer (the Ambassador) to be onsite, ready to play for each session, in case there is someone who needs a partner and none is available. Our goal is to provide all people who want to play with a part-ner; our hope is that they will go back home and tell their bridge-playing friends about their wonderful experience, and return with those friends next year! The Ambassador will only play if needed. If the Ambassador plays, he/she will play for free. And whether or not the Ambassador plays, he/she will get two free plays for use at this or another Dallas Tournament or Unit Games. These Ambassadors will represent our Dallas bridge community to our out-of-town guests, so your participation is greatly needed. Please contact Stu Nelan at [email protected] with your email ad-dress and cell phone number if you would like to be an Ambassador. And if you signed up at the Holi-day Party on Dec 8, please contact him again to ensure that he has your name, cell phone, and email correct. ~Stu Nelan

ATTENTION I / N PLAYERS The ACBL states the “N” in I/N stands for Newcomers. I disagree, but I am not the ACBL ! Anyway, I want to make it clear, any Non Life Master is included at ALL I/N events. Your Unit 176 and District 16 are working on plans to make you feel more included. For instance at the March Sectional (March 12 -15), we will be removing the 0 - 49 and replacing it with 0 - 99 in the Stratified Pairs. In the past, the 0 - 49 games haven’t had enough players and sent novice players into 0 - 499. We’re hoping the 0 - 99 range will open up the game to more players who are comfortable playing with each other. (This is different from what is stated on the flyer). Below is a link to the first version of Intermediate/Newcomer material on our District 16 website. https://www.d16acbl.org/ In it you will find tabs for:

Back issues of Paul Cuneo's I/N Newsletter How to use the ACBL website to get a list of upcoming I/N Tournaments D16 Teaching Materials How to use the ACBL website to get results from D16 past I/N Tournaments Links to ACBL I/N information

So check out the link and please let us know what else we can add to the website to make it more use-ful. Please email me with any questions or comments: [email protected] Please come and play as we want to see you at our events. ~Robbie Ogle

We’re going digital with District 16 Scorecard:

Recall that Scorecard is a bi-monthly publication for District 16, of which our unit is a member. The first few pages have district news and most of the rest has news from specific units and advertisements. We have been given the option of receiving Scorecard in digital form and have elected to take that option. This will result in a significant savings to the unit since our costs for Scorecard are a notable part of our budget. In addition to saving money, there are certain ad-vantages to going digital. For an example, look at the latest scorecard by clicking on

http://www.d16acbl.org/Scorecard/2001.pdf (This may take 9 or 10 seconds to load.)

Note that using the bar at the top, you can change the font and picture size as desired. (“ctrl +” and “ctrl –“ also achieve this.) With most browsers, to search for text you just type “ctrl f” and a box will appear where you can type the text to search. This enables a fast way to find out about specific events or individu-als without having to read or scan through the entire document. Give it a try. ~Joe Gill
