p HUDDLE UPS (OPT IONAL)

Optional huddle ups are for churches that have a drop-off time before the session begins. There are multiple ideas for interaction during this time, such as simple games that preschoolers can play on the floor or within whatever arrangements you gather your kids. This time can continue for a few seconds even after the stage manager addresses the crowd.

(Print the following for your small group leaders.)

During today’s worship time, kids will learn that God gives them the strength to face temptation and make good choices. Play a game about making choices.

• Ask the following questions and then tell kids to “Make a choice!” Kids will quickly move to stand on the appropriate side of the room.

• As time allows, invite kids to share why they chose a particular choice over another.

• Ask the following questions. Would you rather … (Point to the side of the room you want them to move to as you give them their choices.)

• eat pizza every day or never eat pizza again?

• be a famous athlete or be a famous musician?

• sing a song or tell a joke?

• breathe underwater or fly?

• have a giraffe neck or an elephant trunk?

• drink a gallon of ketchup or drink a gallon of mustard?

Color “Joseph and Potiphar” Coloring Sheets

• Talk about ways that kids are tempted or want to do something that they know is wrong. Tell preschoolers that today, they will hear a Bible story about Joseph. Joseph made a good choice. He chose to do what was right and not what was wrong.

• Provide coloring supplies and coloring sheets to the preschoolers. Allow them to color on their pages while they wait for the session to begin.

• If the kids prefer to use blank paper, they can color on the back of the page.

c Estimated time: 1-2 minutes

t Tech: Video option available, Joseph and Potiphar slide

p People: Stage Manager

h Props: Clipboard, pencil, headset, cleaning bottle, cleaning cloth

(Show video or act out the following.)

STAGE MANAGER

(Show Joseph and Potiphar slide.)

(stage manager is looking at clipboard and list of things to do; has a bottle of cleaner and a rag hanging off belt or somewhere obvious on set)

Hi, kids! I was just looking over the list of things I need to get done before the show today. Let’s see … I double-checked the props … I made extra copies of the cue cards … I reset the music …

You know, sometimes I’m tempted to skip some of these jobs … especially the ones I don’t like doing. Like, for instance, “empty the backstage trash cans.” What’s that got to do with putting on a show? I’m not sure why that’s my job anyway. You know what? I’m not going to do it! (proudly marks it off list) There! That’s better!

(listens to headset) What? Oh, no! What happened? … She slipped on a banana peel? … Well, is she OK? … That’s a relief! Why was there a banana peel in the floor anyway? … Oh. Someone didn’t empty the trash, and the garbage spilled out onto the floor? … Oh. Yes, I’ll check on that right away.

Oops. Maybe it wasn’t such a great idea to skip emptying the trash cans. I never thought about someone getting hurt because of stinky garbage on the floor. Now someone has fallen all because I made a bad choice. I’d better go get that mess cleaned up quick!

(talks into headset) Team, we’ve got one minute to showtime! Everyone take your places … carefully!

(grabs cleaning supplies; exits stage)

Hey, guys! Today is going to be a great day. One of the most important things that we can learn as children of God is how to get away from things or people that tempt us to do wrong.

(Show Life Point slide.) Joseph shows us how to do this very well and we’ll hear more about that today. We want you to learn to ask God for help. Say that with me. (Repeat with slide.) Ask God for help.

(Show Bible Verse slide—select preferred version.) Our Bible verse for today is in Isaiah 50:7. God will help me. When we are tempted to do something wrong, we can pray and ask God for help. Our Bible verse tells us that He will! Let’s say this again. (Repeat with slide.) “God will help me.” Isaiah 50:7

p CONNECT ION PO INT GAME

c Estimated time: 5-10 minutes

t Tech: Connection Point slide, Connection Point theme music

p People: Host, 10 kids (or all kids)

h Props: Beanbags (or small balls)

Game Instructions for “Hot Potato!”:

• Enlist 10 volunteers to play the game.

• The goal is to NOT hold the object longer than necessary. It’s hot! As soon as the object is passed to someone, they should quickly pass it to someone else. The person holding the object when time is up is out. Play until one person wins.

• Keep the game moving by getting players out quickly. This will help observing kids not lose interest.

• Consider inviting all the kids to play. For large groups of kids, form several smaller circles.

• Use music (when music stops, person holding object is out) or yell “go!” and “hot potato!” to signal the beginning and end of the round.

HOST

(Play Connection Point theme music and show Connection Point slide.)

Hey, guys! Welcome to Connection Point—the game that’s hot, hot, hot!

Today, we are going to play “Hot Potato.” How many people love this game? Me, too! I’ll need 10 volunteers. (Select volunteers and guide them to stand or sit in a circle in front of the other kids.)

The beanbag is HOT! As soon as it’s passed to you, hand it to your neighbor! Let’s see how well you guys do at juggling hot potatoes! Ready? Go!

(Use music or the phrases “go” and “hot potato!” to start and stop the game. Keep the game moving by getting players out fast.)

Wow, kids…you guys were serious about getting rid of that hot potato! Was your heart beating fast? You wanted to toss that beanbag away as soon as possible, right?

Great job, guys!

(Theme music/slide to transition. Host leads into next segment.)

v B IBLE STORY

c Estimated time: 5-6 minutes

t Tech: Christ Focus, Life Point, and Bible Story slides; Bible Story video

p People: Storyteller

h Props: Bible

(Play the Bible Story video or tell the following Bible story.)

STORYTELLER

(Show Bible Story slide.) Hey, friends! It’s been a great day so far, hasn’t it? Now let’s catch up with our Bible story about Joseph. You won’t believe what has happened to him now!

We learned last week that Joseph’s brothers did not like him. They did not like his dreams, and they were angry because Joseph was their father’s favorite son. When Jacob sent Joseph to check on his brothers, the brothers grabbed him, ripped his coat off, and threw him in a pit. When some traders came by, they sold Joseph to them. These brothers were NOT nice, were they? Now, let’s pick up the Bible story in Genesis 39. Remember, Joseph had been sold to some traders who were passing by.

(Open Bible to Genesis and tell the following story.) Joseph was taken to Potiphar’s house in Egypt to work as a servant. Potiphar was an important officer in the army of Pharaoh, the king of Egypt.

God took care of Joseph. God helped Joseph become successful. Potiphar liked Joseph, and soon he became Potiphar’s helper. Potiphar put Joseph in charge of his whole house and all his business. Potiphar trusted Joseph. Potiphar did not have to worry about anything. God blessed Potiphar’s house because of Joseph.

Potiphar’s wife liked Joseph, too. She wanted Joseph to do something bad. Joseph would not do it because it was wrong. So Potiphar’s wife told a lie to Potiphar. Even though Potiphar trusted Joseph, he believed his wife. Potiphar had Joseph put in prison.

(Show Christ Focus slide.) Wow! Just when things were going well for Joseph, he gets accused of doing something he did not do. And, he was thrown into prison! But Joseph didn’t do anything wrong, did he? Do you think Joseph asked God for help? I think God helped Joseph. Even though he was put in prison for doing the right thing, the Bible says that God was with Joseph. In fact, the warden liked Joseph so much that he put Joseph in charge of all the prisoners. Joseph was responsible for everything that was done there. God was with him and made everything that he did successful.

(Show Life Point slide. Play soft music under prayer.)

Let’s pray and ask God for help us remember that He is with us and will help us. Dear God, thank You for Joseph and for the way he trusted You and asked You for help. Thank You that You were with Joseph and that You are always with us, too. We love You. In Jesus’ name, … Amen.

HOST

(Show Joseph and Potiphar slide) Joseph’s story helps us to remember: Ask God for help. God is always with us and will help us whenever we ask Him.

Optional Giving Segment: Sometimes we can be tempted to give our time or money to things or people that we shouldn’t. One way to fight that temptation is to commit to giving regularly to God as a way to show gratefulness for all He’s given to us. If you’d like to give today, …

(Give your own directions for how the kids can give an offering. Perhaps you have buckets in the back of the room, a treasure chest up front, or a basket that each small group leader passes.)

(Show Bible Verse slide—select preferred version) Remember our Bible verse?

• God will help me. Isaiah 50:7 (Paraphrase)

• The Lord God will help Me. Isaiah 50:7 (HCSB)

STAGE MANAGER

(Show Joseph and Potiphar slide.)

(holds clipboard; checks off last items on list) Lights are out … Props are put away … Oh, hi! I was just going over my list to be sure everything is wrapped up for the day. And this time, I’m not skipping any jobs! Boy, what a mess that was!

Today, we learned that when Joseph was tempted, he made the right choice. He ran from temptation and worked hard to avoid it in the first place. Giving in to temptation is always a bad idea, even if it seems like a small thing … like not taking out the garbage. God wants us to do what’s right and He will always provide a way of escape when we’re tempted to make a wrong choice. So, next time I face temptation, I’m going to think of Joseph and remember that God is powerful enough to help me overcome it!

Be sure to take home your One Conversation™ pages today and talk to your parents about temptations you may struggle with. Pray together and make a plan on how you can avoid temptation and make right choices.

Well, I have a few more things to check off my list, so I’d better get back to it! I look forward to seeing you next time!

p HUDDLE UPS (OPT IONAL)

This time is designed for churches that have a pick-up time from a large room as parents arrive. It’s a great time for follow-up conversations and questions from small group leaders about the session’s content. Games can also be used.

(Print the following for your small group leaders.)

• Remind kids about Peter Yanes and his job as a church planter. Church planters start churches to help spread the good news about Jesus.

• Read the following Scriptures to discover why we should share the gospel: Matthew 28:19 and Mark 16:15. Discuss the Bible verses and allow kids to share their ideas about why they feel it is important to tell others about Jesus.

• Play a game. Divide the group into two teams (or play boys against girls). Use masking tape to create a large tic-tac-toe board on the floor.

• Allow teams to take turns naming a person they can tell about Jesus, a place where they can tell about Jesus, or a way they can share Jesus with someone else.

• For each correct response, the team may have a team member sit in one of the tic-tac-toe squares. The first team to get three members in a row wins.

Missions Story: Peter Yanes: Returning a Favor

As a boys, Peter Yanes’ life was changed when he went to church and learned about Jesus. Now, Peter and his wife, Irene, are missionaries in Pennsylvania. Peter is a church planter, which means he finds places that need churches and people who can start them.

Last year, Peter met Noel Geniza. Noel and his family lived in a community called Pottstown. This was exactly the community where Peter wanted to start a church! Peter and Noel worked together to start the church, where many people now worship and learn about God.

Peter is glad that people support missionaries and pray for him as he starts churches in Pennsylvania. He says: “I can do whatever God wants me to do. I want to spread the gospel of Jesus Christ to all nations and to all people groups.”
