COURSE INFORMATON

BACKGROUND

The RTU was asked by the Northern Ireland Education Technology Strategy Management Group to develop an accredited programme for the education support services. The audiences comprise: Education and Library Board Curriculum Advisory and Support Staff {CASS}, Education Training and Inspectorate {ETI}, Library Service, Council for Catholic Maintained Schools {CCMS}, Northern Ireland Council for Integrated Education {NICIE} and Council for the Curriculum Examinations and Assessment {CCEA}. The RTU’s rationale for using OCN accreditation was that it enabled the development of a customised programme, for the Northern Ireland context, which is more appropriate to the particular audiences within the Education Service.

AIMS

The overall aims of the programme are:

To provide experience of learning online; To encourage participants to engage in critical thinking in relation to

the development and evaluation of elearning; To equip participants with the experience of designing, developing,

implementing, tutoring, reviewing and evaluating online learning experiences and programmes.

COURSE EXPECTATIONS

Duration of Programme

This is a “blended” course and therefore some of the sessions will be held face to face; however, the programme has been planned so that the majority of the sessions will be online.

Initial sessions at the beginning of each Unit will be held face to face so that participants can become familiar with the software, Virtual Learning Environment and get to know other participants in the Group.

TUTOR EXPECTATIONS OF PARTICIPANTS

Attendance, Participation and Commitment

Participants are expected to attend all face to face sessions, and participate regularly in online discussions and assessments in order to meet the relevant assessment criteria of the programme.

In an online learning environment it is vital that participants manage their time effectively and keep up-to-date with discussions and assessments. “Falling behind” in an online environment can make a participant feel “overwhelmed” - even more so - than in a traditional face to face class.

During the programme participants will be expected to: check the course site a minimum of 3 times per week; read materials; view websites; participate in online activities, synchronous and asynchronous

discussions, in a collaborative and constructive manner; work collaboratively in groups; follow appropriate online netiquette guidelines; encourage and support other online participants; complete tasks in order to meet relevant assessment criteria; post assessments by due dates; notify tutor and other group members if unable to meet agreed

dates {eg synchronous discussion} and share their ideas, teaching/work experiences, resources and

assessments in order to learn from each other and benefit from the programme.

Contacting the Tutor Participants may contact the Tutor by email, by telephone or by

appointment. Participants should contact the Tutor to make alternative

arrangements, if assessment deadlines need to be adjusted, in an emergency situation.

Participants should contact the Tutor, if an emergency situation arises, and participation may be affected, for a period of time.

Please Note: If a participant does not provide sufficient evidence to meet

Learning Outcome 6 then this is a ‘Fail’ and the recommendation will be that the participant ‘Resits’ the complete Unit.

If a participant is ‘Referred’ they will be given one opportunity to resubmit evidence. (Please see Policy for Resits and Resubmissions of work.)

Provide a list of all assessment tasks and assessment criteria;

Provide learning outcome rubrics;

Contribute to synchronous and asynchronous discussions, as necessary;

Maintain “tutor visibility” online;

Reply to posting on Discussion Board within 2 working days (as appropriate);

Be supportive, encouraging, and approachable both online and face to face;

Provide individual feedback within 4 weeks of the completion date of the unit {excluding holiday periods}; and
