INTRODUCTIONThank you for being part of Shadow Mountain Kids! Here at SMK we are learning the Bible in Chronological order, which helps kids under-stand how the Bible connects to Jesus!

Each section is broken up into 4-6 week units, and each unit has a theme. Unit one, of course, starts at the beginning.

Our hope is that this guide will help you continue the discussion at home as kids learn more about the Bible.

HOW TO USE THIS BOOK:• Set aside a night to “Bring it Home” with

your family around the dinner table. • Read the summarized story and discuss it

together, using the discussion starters provided. Have fun and be creative!

• Be sure to pray together as a family and watch God work in amazing ways.

Page 4: Unit 3...Genesis 27-28 JACOB AND ESAU BIBLE STORY SUMMARY • Isaac was old and his eyesight had faded. • Isaac wanted to bless Esau before he died. • Rebekah wanted Isaac to bless

Genesis 27-28JACOB AND ESAU

BIBLE STORY SUMMARY• Isaac was old and his eyesight had faded.• Isaac wanted to bless Esau before he died.• Rebekah wanted Isaac to bless Jacob.• Rebekah and Jacob tricked Isaac into blessing Jacob.

STORY POINT Rebekah and Jacob tricked Isaac into blessing Jacob.

BIG PICTURE QUESTION Does God keep His promises? God always keeps His promises because He is faithful.

KEY PASSAGE Genesis 28:15

FAMILY ACTIVITY• Because Isaac was blind, he had to use his sense of

touch to decipher which son was standing in front of him. Take turns being blindfolded. Place a household object in a box in front of the blindfolded person and, using only their hands, have them feel and guess what the object is.

PRAYERDear Heavenly Father,We are so thankful for the lessons you give us through the stories of Jacob. We pray that as a family we can grow stronger through these lessons in relationship with you and each other. We ask for-giveness for the times we act out of anger and ask that you would help us make decisions that are glorifying to you. We give thanks for those we get to have in our lives and for our relationship with you.

In Jesus name we PrayAmen

TABLE TALK DISCUSSION STARTERS• Did Rebekah and Jacob make a right or wrong choice?• Did Rebekah and Jacob’s wrong choice stop God’s

plan for their family?• Did Rebekah and Jacob trust God’s promises?• Why did God reject Jacob after he tricked Isaac?• How can this story help you trust God when life hap-

pens differently than you plan?

CHRIST CONNECTION The promises for Abraham and Isaac also became the promises for Jacob. At Bethel, God showed that His plan was to continue the covenant through Jacob’s family and eventually a whole nation, leading to the birth of Jesus--the promised Savior.

Page 5: Unit 3...Genesis 27-28 JACOB AND ESAU BIBLE STORY SUMMARY • Isaac was old and his eyesight had faded. • Isaac wanted to bless Esau before he died. • Rebekah wanted Isaac to bless

STORY POINT Jacob tricked Jacob into marrying Leah and Rachel.

BIG PICTURE QUESTION Does God keep His promises? God always keeps His promises because He is faithful.

KEY PASSAGE Galatians 28:15

Genesis 29-31BIBLE STORY SUMMARY• Jacob fled to his uncle Laban’s land.• He met Rachel and agreed to work for seven years

to marry her.• Laban tricked jacob into marrying Leah and Rachel.• Jacob favored Rachel, but God chose to use Leah in

His plans.

JACOB AND RACHEL

PRAYER Dear Heavenly Father,We are so thankful for the lessons you give us through the stories of Jacob. We pray that as a family we can grow stronger through these lessons in relationship with you and each other. We ask for-giveness for the times we act out of anger and ask that you would help us make decisions that are glorifying to you. We give thanks for those we get to have in our lives and for our relationship with you. In Jesus name we pray, Amen

FAMILY ACTIVITY• Find some friends and join your family in a big

rendition of “Father Abraham.” Choose a leader to guide everyone through the motions. Talk about how Jacob’s twelve sons were part of Abraham’s family and how we become part of the same family through Jesus.

TABLE TALK DISCUSSION STARTERS• How did God show His love for Leah?• What are some ways God used Jacob’s hard situa-

tion for good?• Have you ever been tempted to be deceptive, or

tricky, to get what you want?• In this week’s Bible story, Jacob got tricked. Name a

time Jacob tricked someone. Hint: Read last week’s Bible story in Genesis 27.

CHRIST CONNECTION Nothing could stop God’s plan for the family of Abra-ham, Isaac, and Jacob. Even though Jacod did not love Leah, God loved her and used her in His plan. Through the family of Jacob and Leah’s son Judah, God would show His love for the world by sending His Son to be the Savior He promised.

BIG PICTURE QUESTION Does God keep His prom-ises? God always keeps His promises because He is faithful.

KEY PASSAGE Galatians 28:15 PRAYER

Dear Heavenly Father,We are so thankful for the lessons you give us through the stories of Jacob.

CHRIST CONNECTION God changed Jacob’s life and gave him a new name, Isra-el. Jesus came so that we might have a changed life, for-given of sin. (2 Cor. 5:17) Jesus’ death and resurrection provided sinful people the way to be adopted into God’s family. When we are adopted into the family of God we also receive a new name -- children of God. (John 1:12)

TABLE TALK DISCUSSION STARTERS• Would you be afraid to meet Esau if you were Jacob?• Why did Jacob wrestle with God?• Do you ever “wrestle with God”?• Why do you think Jacob refused to let go of God?• What does God call us when He adopts us into His

family?

FAMILY ACTIVITY• Talk to your kids about what their names mean.

Discuss why you chose the names you gave them and why you were given your name. Look online to disover the meaning of some names if you don’t know.

Page 7: Unit 3...Genesis 27-28 JACOB AND ESAU BIBLE STORY SUMMARY • Isaac was old and his eyesight had faded. • Isaac wanted to bless Esau before he died. • Rebekah wanted Isaac to bless

understood Pharaoh’s dreams.• A great famine came, just as Joseph predicted from

Pharaoh’s dream.• Jacob sent his sons to Egypt to get food.• Joseph forgave his brothers and revealed that he

was their brother.

STORY OF JOSEPH

PRAYER Dear Heavenly Father,We are so thankful for the lessons you give us through the stories of Jacob. We pray that as a family we can grow stronger through these lessons in relationship with you and each other. We give thanks for those we get to have in our lives and for our relationship with you.

In Jesus name we PrayAmen

TABLE TALK DISCUSSION STARTERS• Why did Joseph’s brothers hate him?• Why do you think Jacob favored Joseph?• How does it feel to get in trouble when you didn’t do

anything wrong?• Have you ever felt forgotten?• Why is it hard to forgive people who have hurt us?• How does God forgive us for the way we sin?
