Unit 3: Miracles of Jesus NT3.3 Official's Son is Healed

Scripture: John 4:45-54

Lesson Goal: Jesus was a very powerful teacher. He proved to everyone that he was really God by healing

the sick and forgiving people of their sins. In the lesson we will see how Jesus used his power to heal the son of an official. We will learn that God is powerful and we can be confident that He will always do what is best for us in every situation.

Introduction: This is the third lesson in Unit 3:The Miracles of Jesus. The life and ministry of Jesus is told to us in the first four books of the New Testament. This Bible story is found in book of John. In the lesson we will see how Jesus used his power to heal the son of an official. We will learn that God is powerful and we can be confident that He will always do what is best for us in every situation. The Gospels are the first four books in the New Testament. The gospels tell about the life and ministry of Jesus. The word "gospel" means the good news about Jesus. Let's say the names of the gospels together. Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John.

Attention Getter: Our lesson today is about power. We use many objects everyday that need power to work. Let's play a game called the "Power Quiz." I will show you an object on the screen. You can call out what kind of power the object uses. It might be gas, electric, water, wind, or human muscle power. Let's see how many you can get right! Ready? Here is a picture of a school bus! What kind of power does it use? Yes, it is gas. This is a lamp. What kind of power does the light bulb use? Electric, that's right. Here is a windmill. These are used on farms. What makes the windmill turn? Wind, good! Now here is an easy one. It is a car. What power runs a car? That's right, gas. Here is a flashlight. What makes a flashlight work? Batteries, yes, that is what you need! Here is something that you probably like ....a bike! What makes a bike go down the street? You, yes your muscles make it move. Here is something else that is fun--a kite! What makes the kite go up in the air? Its wind! good! Your mom uses this: a stove! This is rather tough because the stove could be electric or gas. Which does your family have? The last one is easy--a sailboat! What moves a sailboat across the water? Wind that's right! Did you know that there is another source of power that is greater than any of these we have talked about? It is the power God has! In this lesson we are going to talk about the times that we need His power to help us. We will see how Jesus used his power to heal the son of an official.

Opening Prayer: Let's pray. Thank you Jesus that you have given us the story of how you healed the Nobleman's son. We know that you can do anything and nothing is impossible for you because You are God. Thank you for coming from heaven to be our Savior. Help us to remember that you have promised to always be with us and that we do NOT need to be afraid. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.

Memory Verse: Our memory verse is Psalms 118:6 says "The Lord is with me. I will not be afraid."

From town to town , from village to village people probably told each other, "Did you hear? Jesus is on His way to our town." They had also heard about his teachings and his miracles performed in Jerusalem during the Feast of the Passover. they had seen Jesus and his disciples in Jerusalem. While Jesus was in Jerusalem he had also healed many people. Now he was coming to their town. They probably wondered if Jesus would heal people in their town, too! Jesus and his disciples had just come from the city of Sychar in Samaria. There Jesus had met the woman at the well and had asked her for a drink of water. Then He offered to give her "living water" which was eternal life. She had believed in him and told everyone in that city about him. As a result, many people had come to believe in Jesus as the Son of God and the Messiah. Jesus along with his disciples were traveling north from Samaria toward the town of Cana. Cana was just a small town north of Samaria. This was the place where Jesus and his disciples and Jesus' mother had been invited to come to a wedding! Jesus had decided to come back to visit friends there and stay for a while. The people of Cana remembered how Jesus had performed his first miracle in their town. Jesus had turned water into wine! They remembered how kind Jesus had been to help this family with the need they had. About fifteen miles away from Cana was the city of Capernaum. It was a city that had been built on the shore of the Sea of Galilee. In Capernaum lived a nobleman who was a government official of that city. But he wasn't like most of the other Roman rulers because he was a good and kind man especially to poor people. This nobleman had a big problem! He was very sad. His little son lay sick with a burning fever, and the doctors could not make him well. He had money to buy medicine but it did not work. He and his wife must have done everything they knew to do to take good care of their sick boy. They put him to bed and probably gave him cool drinks and put wet cloths on his head. But the little boy did not get better. He was still very, very sick. The little boy was so sick that everyone knew he would soon die. They knew that only God could make him well. The nobleman was terribly worried and distressed because he could not help his son. He had heard about Jesus and about His power to do wonderful things; so when the news came that Jesus was in Cana of Galilee, the nobleman began to have hope. Perhaps Jesus would use His great power and do what no doctor could do—bring health again to his little boy. The nobleman knew what he was going to do—he would get Jesus to heal his son. And as important or as well known as the nobleman might have been, he wasn't ashamed to ask Jesus for help. In fact, this man could not wait until Jesus came to his home city before going out to see him. He would travel to the town of Cana as fast as he could. It was a long walk of 15 miles but he would hurry as fast as he could. About one o'clock in the afternoon, as Jesus had finished teaching in the marketplace of Cana, when the nobleman ran up to him, "Excuse me, please," the nobleman said, "I must speak to You at once. It's an emergency—very urgent." Jesus noticed the nobleman's urgency. He told Jesus about his sick child lying at home and he pleaded with Jesus, "Sir please come down before my child dies!" He really wanted Jesus to go with him to Capernaum so He could heal his son. When Jesus heard the nobleman's request, he answered, "Unless you see signs and wonders you will not believe that I am sent of God." Jesus was not talking just to the official. He was talking to all the people who were there waiting to see what He would do. You see, Jesus knew their thoughts and feelings. He knew that they were more interested in seeing miracles than in believing in God. The nobleman was very much in earnest. He got down on his knees and begged, "Sir, if you do not come down at once, my little son will be dead when we reach home." No matter what--he wanted to see his son get well. This nobleman was convinced that Jesus had the power to help him. But Jesus did not move! He did not immediately go to Capernaum to see the man's son! Then Jesus spoke kindly to this distressed father. he said, "Return to your home without me, for your son will not die." The nobleman believed Jesus would do what he said he would do! He was not afraid any longer that his son would die because Jesus had said that the child should be well again! So he turned back to go home to Capernaum. Believing what Jesus says and obeying Him like that is called faith! Again the father walked and

walked toward his home in Capernaum. But this time he was not in such a hurry. He stopped to rest for the night. He knew Jesus would do what He promised. The next day as he walked along the road, the nobleman got a surprise! Some of his servants came running toward him. The servants were excited and out of breath. They said, "Your son is well and no longer sick. He will live." As the servants came closer, the nobleman asked, "At what time did he begin to get well?" And the servants replied, "His fever left him yesterday at the seventh hour of the day just after lunch." The official realized that his son had been healed at the same time that Jesus had said to him, "Your son will be well! That was the exact moment that the official had believed Jesus. He knew that it was the power of this prophet Jesus that had saved the life of his child. When the official reached his home, there was his boy, healthy and happy again! Everyone in the household heard the story of how Jesus had healed the boy. Jesus had showed love to this family even though He was far away. From that time on, this important official and his whole family not only believed that Jesus is the Son of God but also believed that He had the power to help them! We can choose to believe that Jesus is God's Son, too. When we believe in His love for us and believe that He died to take the punishment for our sin, we become Christians--members of God's family. As God's children we can always ask for His help. We need to have faith like the nobleman! Sometimes as Christians we don't always ask for God's help. Sometimes we just forget to ask. We may think that God isn't interested in our problems. We might think that God does not care about us but He does! Maybe one time we ask God to help us in a certain way and He didn't do what we wanted. God really does want to help us with every problem--no matter how big or small--and because He is so wise, He helps us in the way He knows is best for us. Let's look at some different things that could happen to us and find out how we can have faith like the nobleman. This is a thunder storm cloud. When we have a very bad thunder storm, the wind may blow the rain against our house. Sometimes there is a very loud crack of lightning and thunder. Do we need to be afraid? No, we don't. We can pray and ask the Lord to help us. What does our verse say? "The Lord is with me. I will not be afraid."

This is a picture of a house that is on fire. Having a fire in our house would be very frightening, wouldn't it? If we did have a fire, we need to find the nearest door or window and get out of the house very quickly, right? We should not panic and stand still, should we? Remember, what does our verse say? "The Lord is with me. I will not be afraid." Sometimes there are kids at school that can frighten us. They are called bullies and bullies can be very mean. We need to tell our parents and teachers about kids who are bullies. But more important we need to tell God about it. What does our verse say about him? "The Lord is with me. I will not be afraid." This boy accidently threw his ball into the window and broke the glass. Should he be afraid to tell the truth? No, God is with us. He will not leave us when we get in trouble. What does our verse say? "The Lord is with me. I will not be afraid." This girl is does not like the dark night. She thinks that she sees scary things moving around. Do we have to be afraid of the dark? No, our verse says, The Lord is with me. I will not be afraid."

At school we sometimes have to read out loud or give reports. We begin to think about what the other kids are saying about us instead of what we are reading. We should not be afraid. We can ask God for help. Our verse says, "The Lord is with me. I will not be afraid." God cares about everything we do. He wants us to do our best at school. Sometimes we have to learn something new and it is very hard. What should we do? We can ask God for help. What does the verse say again, "The Lord is with me. I will not be afraid." This boy is in a very important basketball game. The score depends on him making the goal. He wants to win for his team. How should he feel? He does NOT need to be afraid. He can depend on God's promise to be with him. Our verse says, "The Lord is with me. I will not be afraid." Let's remember that God is powerful and we can be sure that He will always do what is best for us!

Review Questions: Talk Show Interview (Grades K-5) Students arrange the room to look like the set of a talk show. Students will take turns acting as the guest on the talk show. The teacher plays the part of the talk show host. Other students participate by acting as the audience. Say: Today we are going to find out what some people have to say about power. (Ask audience.) What kinds of power do you use? (electricity, muscle power, power from the sun). Each of you have heard the Bible lesson about how Jesus showed the power of God in healing the official's son. We are going ask you some question to tell us about that power. Our first guest is (student's name). Are you ready for your question?" Use the following questions about the Bible story:

1. What was the name of the town where the nobleman and his family lived? (Capernaum) 2. What was the reputation of the nobleman? (He was a good and kind man especially to the poor.) 3. What happened in the nobleman's family that caused them great distress? (His son was very ill. He was

so sick that he was going to die.) 4. Why did the nobleman decide to go to Jesus? (He had tried every remedy and nothing was working. He

had heard how Jesus had healed the sick and performed miracles.) 5. Because Jesus was not close by, what did the nobleman have to do? (The nobleman decided to hurriedly

travel to the town of Cana and beg Jesus to heal his son.) 6. When the nobleman rushed up to Jesus, what did he ask? (He begged Jesus to come to house and heal

his son.) 7. What was Jesus' response to the nobleman? (Jesus said that people were wanting miracles and signs so

they would believe so Jesus just waited.) 8. What did the nobleman do in response to Jesus' decision to stay where he was? (He begged Jesus again

saying, "Sir, come down before my son dies.") 9. What did Jesus then tell the man that was so unusual? ("You may go. Your son will live." Jesus was

telling him that He didn't need to go to see the boy to heal him. He could do it right where He was.) 10. What did the nobleman do when he heard Jesus' promise to heal his son? (He believed Jesus and slowly

started back home.) 11. What happened to the nobleman as he was returning home the next day? (His servants came running out

to tell him that his son was healed and that the fever had left him yesterday at the seventh hour.) 12. Why was the timing of the healing of the nobleman's son so important? (That was the exact hour that

Jesus had told him that his son would be well.) 13. What does this amazing fact about this healing tell us about Jesus? (Jesus had the power of God to heal

and he did not need to be present to touch the sick boy to make him well.) 14. What is amazing about the nobleman in this story? He had the faith to believe Jesus even when it

seemed Jesus did not care by not going to go back to his home.)

Bible Memory Verse Activity: "God's Answering Machine or God's Text Message" Psalms 118:6 says "The Lord is with me. I will not be afraid." Jesus had promised to never leave us or forsake us. He will give us everything we need and will return for us one day to take us to heaven. Let's say the verse again, Psalm 118:6 "The Lord is with me. I will not be afraid." Have the children look up the verse in scripture and read it together in unison. Materials: cassette tape recorder or use cell phone voice text; Bibles, 3 X 5 cards; pencils Procedure: Teacher should write the verse on 3 x 5 card leaving out the vowels in the words. Give each child a 3 X 5 card with the vowels left out of the words. Ask the child to look up the verse in scripture and write the missing vowels. Children are to practice the verse until they have it memorized. When they have learned the verse tell them that they may record their verse on the cassette player or as a text message on a cell phone. They are to follow the verse by leaving a message that they would think that God send to them via text or would put on His answering machine. Example: "Psalms 118:6 says "The Lord is with me. I will not be afraid." You don't need to leave your name or number I already know who you are and what you need. Just be patient and don't be afraid I am with you and will show you what I can do!"

Option: You can prerecord the following messages into your phone or onto a cassette recorder for the children to read or hear:

1. Jesus loves you soooo much! 2. Jesus wants to be your best friend. 3. Jesus thinks your a neat kid! 4. Jesus loves to hear you talk to him. 5. Jesus made you special. 6. Jesus can't wait to show you your special home in heaven. 7. Jesus loves you all the time! 8. Jesus wants you to tell him everything. 9. Jesus will never leave you! 10.Jesus knows all the things that you need.

Group Learning Game: "Pretend Doctor" (Grades K-2) Materials: small crutches; wheelchair, toy doctor's that includes a thermometer, stethoscope, and blood pressure cuff, real bandages, and stretch gauze that sticks to itself. Say: "In our lesson today Jesus healed the nobleman's son. The nobleman tried to help his son by calling the doctors. The doctors did their best but they could not heal the son. Today we are going to pretend to be the doctors." Let children pretend to be doctors and nurses. They may wish to use dolls as their patients or the children can take turn pretending to be sick. Help students see that modern day doctors can help sick children but only God can heal them! Optional: Reenact what the nobleman might have said to the doctors who treated his son. Finally have the nobleman say: "I need to go see Jesus. Only He can heal my son." Allow the children to continue acting out the story possibly taking turns being the official and Jesus. Have the other children participate in the roles of the sick boy, the worried mother, the servants, Jesus, and the people following Jesus.

Group Learning Activity: Trust Books (Grades 2-5) Materials: Bibles, construction paper, scissors, large sheets of paper, markers, several hole punchers, binding materials such as shoelaces, lanyard, or narrow ribbon. Preparation: Cut construction paper into 1/4 sheets, making six to eight of the same size for each student. Ask: When do you need to trust in God's power to help you. Let's look up Psalm 119:6. What does this verse say that God will do when we are afraid? (He will be with us and give us courage.) We can always trust God to help us know what to do. Let's make books to record ways we want to ask for God's help and trust in His power." Distribute the 6-8 small sheets of paper to each students. Have students draw and write about situations that they need God's help. Use class discussion to help students think of these places and situations. Students are to take the pages they have made and bind them into books. Students can make shoelace books, a basic four book, or a bow tie book. For a shoe lace book: punch holes along the edge of the booklet, making two rows of six holes each. Use a 24 inch length of shoelace or a length of ribbon. Lace the edge in an X shape as shown. For a Basic Four Book: punch four holes along the long edge. Cut a 4 inch length of ribbon for each hole. Thread the ribbon through each hole and tie a knot. For the Bow Tie Book: Punch four hole along the short edge. Cut two 12 inch lengths of ribbon. Thread each ribbon through the two holes from the back and tie into bows in the front. Students can use markers to decorate the covers of their books. Suggestion: Students can make the books of dark colored paper. Then use decorative edge scissors to cut the smaller sheets of light-colored paper and glue the light colored pages in the book. Students use the light colored papers to write about their situations where they need God's power. Bring stickers, glitter, puff paints, and other materials to decorate the books.

Group Learning Game: "Do You Believe?" Game (Grades K-3) Say: "In our lesson today the official believed Jesus' promise to heal his son. God wants us to trust Him and to believe in Him, too. We are going to play a game that will help us know what were are to believe about God." Procedure: Line the children up in a horizontal row across the back of the room. Space them at least two feet apart if possible. Tell them the game is similar to " Mother-May-I?" You will tell them things Jesus said. If they believe what He said, they respond with "yes I do" then follow the instruction in parenthesis. If not, they remain where they are and wait for the next statement. (Example: You say, "Jesus said only He can forgive sins." Do you believe that? Children answer: "Yes, I do." You say, ("You may take three baby steps forward") The goal of the game is for all the children to end up at the front with you. You may need to add or take away statements depending on the size of your room and group.

1. Jesus said He would come back someday to take us to Heaven. Do you believe that? 2. Jesus said that when we do something kind for someone it's like we're doing it to Him. Do you believe

that? 3. Jesus said we are to be like a servant to other people, putting them first. Do you believe that? 4. Jesus said we are to pray for people who don't like us and who treat us badly. Do you believe that? 5. Jesus said we should not try to see how many toys and goodies we can collect while we're living here on

earth. Do you believe that? 6. Jesus said people will be able to tell whether we love Him or not by the way we act. Do you believe that? 7. Jesus said He will never leave us. Do you believe that? 8. Jesus said we are to forgive someone over and over again. Do you believe that?

Group Learning Activity: Blind Faith Walk (Grades 2-5) Say: In our lesson today the nobleman had faith in what Jesus said to him about how his son would be healed. He could not see the results immediately. He had to trust Jesus' words. Today we are going to play a game to help us understand what it means to have faith--"blind faith" in Christ." Procedure: Blindfold one volunteer student. The student will be blindfolded and guided with verbal instructions through your room and around obstacles without bumping into anything. After the walk, ask questions of the one who was blind-folded; “Did you trust me?” “Did you ever try to walk on your own?” “How did you keep from walking into something?" Talk about how following your instructions is an example of how we need to follow God’s instructions in the Bible. He will lead and guide us. He is trustworthy. Explain that faith is like something your students have heard about and studied about but never seen. For example, the Statue of Liberty." Does it really exist? How do you know it exists? Then talk about God. He exists even though He can't be seen and that the world around us makes it known that there is a God. (Romans 1:20)

Group Learning Activity: F-A-I-T-H Acrostic (Grades 3-5) Discuss the meaning of "Faith." Say: "To have faith means that we totally trust and depend on God for our salvation. The official had "faith" in Jesus because he believed what Jesus said and acted upon it. He trust Jesus so much that he went back home without Jesus! We must trust Jesus and believe His Word in order to have salvation. Today we are going to make an acrostic using the word FAITH. We will use each letter to be the start of a phrase that describes "faith." Using the students' responses write an acrostic on the whiteboard. Here is an example of one that you might write:

F--For God so loved the world A--Always trust in God I--If you can't see T--things you H--hope for.

Group Learning Activity: "Find it on the Map" (Grades 3-5) Print out one copy of the map and the directions below for each student. As a group project have students draw lines to show the journey of Jesus during His first year of ministry. Use the map directions as a group activity. Review the previous lessons about the ministry of Jesus as each city on the map is located.

Craft Learning Activity: "Believe Bags" (Grades 2-5) Materials: Small brown lunch bags (one for each child); Markers; Glitter pens; Pretty stickers Magnetic tape; 2-3 sheets of card stock or other heavier paper; Scissors Procedure: Print the template below or type the "I believe" statements on the page below onto the sheets of card stock. Cut the statements in 2" long by 1" high rectangles or along the solid lines. Make each child all 16 of the believe cards. Attach a strip of magnetic tape to the back of each "I Believe" statement. Give each child a small brown lunch bag to decorate. Say: "In our lesson today the official believed Jesus' promise to heal his son. God wants us to trust Him and to believe in Him, too. We are going to make a "Believe Bag" to help us trust in Him. Each day you are to draw one of these "I Believe" statements out of your bag. Read it or have someone read it to you. Pray that God will help you really believe what it says. Stick it on the refrigerator so you can remember it throughout the day."

Craft Learning Activity: Giant Bandages (Grades K-2) Materials: construction paper (one per child); markers, crayons, stickers, gauze pads, glue Preparation: Before class cut the construction paper in half horizontally and then round the corners to resemble an adhesive bandage. With markers, write on one side, "Show love to those who are hurt." Give each child a construction paper adhesive bandage and gauze pad. On the written side have the children glue the gauze pad to the middle of their adhesive bandage. Give children the time to decorate the other side with crayons, markers, and miscellaneous stickers you may have on hand. Remind them that when someone is hurt, God wants us to feel concern and to show love to him or her.

Craft Learning Activity: "Band Aid" Get Well Card (Grades K-5) Materials: construction paper or colored paper; crayons or markers; old greeting cards, band aids, squiggly eyes, scissors, glue. Preparation: Before class cut out pictures from old greeting cards. Fold construction paper in half and write, "Get Well Soon" on the front. Give the children the folded construction paper and allow them to decorate the outside and inside as they wish with crayons, markers, and cut out pictures. Have students put a band aid on their card. Use squiggly eyes to make a fun Get Well card.

Craft Learning Activity: Believe Beads Key Chain Materials: Small packages of beads (one package for each child); Use alphabet beads so students can spell out the word believe for their key chain; Neon shoestrings (one string per child); Key chain circle OR notebook ring Preparation: Cut each shoestring in half. Fold the end that was cut over the key chain circle or notebook ring and hot glue it down. The end that is left dangling is the end that the beads will be strung on. Procedure: Have the children sit in a circle around you. Give them each a small package of beads. Have them choose a specific colored bead from the package, but before stringing it on ask the children to tell you one thing they believe about Jesus. Instruct the children not to run ahead of you stringing the beads. Do it together so that before each bead is strung, they have thought of something they believe about Jesus. Have students choose beads with alphabet letters to spell out the word "believe."The key chain can be taken home and shared with someone, or it can be left in the classroom and memory verses for the next quarter can be typed on paper keys and added to the chain each week

Craft Learning Activity: Masking Tape Art "Believe" (Grades 3-5) Say: "In our lesson today the official believed Jesus' promise to heal his son. God wants us to trust Him and to believe in Him, too. Today we are going to make a poster to remind us to trust in Him." Materials: Large roll of poster paper; masking tape, poster paint. Procedure: Give each student a 3-4 foot length of poster paper. Have students use the masking tape to form the letters "B-E-L-I-E-V-E" on the poster paper. Using different colors of poster paint have the students paint the entire poster covering all areas of the background. (Paint over the masking tape letters.) After the paint thoroughly dries remove the masking tape revealing the unpainted areas under the letters to form the word "believe."

Craft Learning Activity: Time to Trust God (Grades K-2) Purpose: Create a paper clock showing the time 7 o’clock, when Jesus saved the man’s son. This serves as a fun reminder to trust in God for his perfect timing. Supplies: Paper plate, sturdy colored paper, brad or paper fastener, yarn, glue or tape, crayons or markers Prepare: On the back of the plate, print: “What time did Jesus save the man’s son? John 4:46-54.” On the front rim of the plate, print the numbers 1-6 and 8-12 at the correct locations for a clock. Leave a space for the number 7 to be added by the child. From sturdy colored paper, cut a number 7 shape. From sturdy colored paper, cut the hands for the clock; a 1-inch by 4-inch rectangle and a 1-inch by 3-inch rectangle. Pierce the ends of the two rectangles and the center of the plate. Directions: Color the face and rim of the clock. Glue or tape the number 7 onto the plate in its correct place, between the 6 and 8. Use a brad or paper fastener to attach the hands to the clock. Say: "The man’s son was healed in the exact moment Jesus said, “Your son will live.” What time was the son healed? (What we call 7:00 today.) Your clock shows the time as 7:00. Put it on a table at home. Each time you see it, remember we can trust God to keep His promise that things will happen exactly when Jesus says they will.

Life Application Challenge: Eighteen Inches? (Grades K-5) Salvation Challenge: Take a tape measure and measure several children from their foreheads to their mid-chest area (where their heart is). Tell each child how far that distance is. When you have completed your measurements, explain to the children that we can believe with our minds but that isn't what God really wants. Jesus needs to be believed with our hearts and allowed to change our hearts. It's our hearts that matter to God, not our minds and intellects. Those "eighteen inches?" from our minds to our hearts are very important. We want Jesus to drop from our minds to our hearts. Saving faith is to trust completely on Jesus and the payment He made for our sins on the cross, so that we can be forgiven and have a personal relationship with Him. Jesus believed is salvation received! You too can receive a new hope in your life, just like the nobleman did. Salvation is offered to everyone freely. How about you? Will you put your trust and hope in Jesus to save you? Say: "Because Jesus is God He is not limited by time or space. To heal a nobleman's son in a town about 20 miles wasn't a problem for Jesus. The challenge for the nobleman was whether he would believe that Jesus could heal from a distance. We face a similar challenge today. Will we believe what Jesus said as recorded in the Bible over a distance of nearly 2,000 years? Or, will we resort to worry, panic and fear when problems arise because we can’t see Jesus with our physical eyes? The faith of the nobleman led to not only the healing of his son but to his salvation but all those who lived in his house. God wants us to trust him for things that we can’t see with our eyes. Pray, trust and expect God to work." Conclude by asking the students this question: "Can you trust God enough to work in ways that might not be immediate to us right away!"

Draw a line to show the journey of Jesus

1. Jesus, now about 30 years old (Luke 3:23) travels from his home-town of Nazareth in Galilee

2. At the River Jordan, possibly near Bethany-across-the-Jordan, he is baptized by John the Baptist (Matthew 3:13; Mark 1:9)

3. He goes in to the Judean Desert or wilderness to face the devil's temptation (Matthew 4:1; Mark 1:12; Luke 4:1)

4. At the River Jordan, near Bethany-across-the-Jordan, or Bethabara (John 1:28), and according to John's Gospel, Jesus calls his first five disciples (John 1:35). These include Philip, Andrew, and Simon Peter all from Bethsaida in Galilee (John 1:44)

5. Jesus returns north to Galilee with his disciples (John 1:43), and at a wedding in Cana, changes the water into wine - his first recorded miracle (John 2:1)

6. He continues on to Capernaum, on the northern shore of the Sea of Galilee with his mother, brothers and disciples, and stays there a short time (John 2:12)

7. He travels south to Jerusalem for the Passover - the first one mentioned in the Gospels (John 2:13). There he drives the money-changers from the Temple for the first time (John 2:14). He also meets the Pharisee, Nicodemus (John 3:1)

8. Jesus leaves for the countryside of Judea where his disciples baptize believers (John 3:22)

9. Jesus and his disciples continue northwards from Judea (John 4:3), passing through the territory of Samaria (John 4:4). Near Sychar, Jesus meets the Samaritan woman at the well (John 4:5). Many Samaritans believe in him (John 4:39), after which he continues on to Galilee (John 4:43)

10. He reaches Galilee (Matthew 4:12; Mark 1:14; Luke 4:14; John 4:45), and back in Cana heals the official's son who lays sick in Capernaum (John 4:46)

11. Jesus returns to his home-town of Nazareth, and preaches in the synagogue (Luke 4:16). He is rejected for the first time (Luke 4:28)
