  • JAPANESE GEOGRAPHY

The islands of Japan are really just the tops of undersea mountains and volcanoes, sticking up out of the ocean. Those mountains cover nearly all of Japan. Only about 20 percent of the land is flat. Because it is difficult to live and farm on mountain slopes, most Japanese people have always lived in those flat areas, the coastal plains. In addition to the mountains and the lack of flat land, the nearness of the sea shaped the lives of Japanese people. Their homes were never far from the sea. Naturally, they turned to the sea for food. They learned to prepare all kinds of seafood, from eel to shark to octopus to seaweed. As a result, seafood has been a key part of the Japanese diet for thousands of years.

The Japanese islands are located on a part of the world called the Ring of Fire. The Ring of Fire is a chain of volcanos that surrounds the Pacific ocean. This area is very unstable and has frequent earthquakes that cause great destruction and loss of life. In 1923 an Earthquake struck Japan's capital city of Tokyo causing over 100,000 deaths. Another threat to Japan comes from huge waves called Tsunami that are often caused by earthquakes under the sea. These waves can wash many miles inland. In 2010 a tsunami killed over 30,000 Japanese people on the east coast of Japan. Japan's volcanos also often erupt causing damage to farmland and villages. Japan's biggest city Tokyo is built next to Japan's most famous volcano called Mt. Fuji. Japan also has many storms called Typhoons which can have winds that reach almost 200mph.
