Unit 4: Joseph OT4.2 Joseph a Man of Integrity Lesson

Scripture: Genesis 39

Lesson Goal: In this lesson we will see how Joseph was treated unfairly even though he had

done nothing wrong. Joseph who was one of the twelve sons of Jacob was a man of integrity.

Introduction: This is the second lesson in Unit 4: Joseph. Joseph was one of the twelve sons of Jacob. God would allow him to go through many problems in his life but God would take all the bad things and make them into good. In this lesson we will see how Joseph was treated unfairly even though he had done nothing wrong. The lesson is found in the first book of the Bible called Genesis. Genesis is the first book of Law. The books of the Law are the first five books in the Old Testament. Let's say the books of Law together. Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy.

Attention Getter: "Integrity" Have you ever wanted to do something that is wrong? Wanting to do what is not right is called a temptation. Everyday Satan tempts us to do things that are not pleasing to God. We have to pay attention when that happens.

We need to know what to do when temptation comes. We need to be prepared before Satan tempts us. What should we do? God wants us to say "No!" to sin and He is willing to help us if we just ask him to.

If we resist temptation and do what God desires we have what is called "integrity." What does the word integrity mean? It is being honest; always telling the truth. A person who has integrity is very reliable, trustworthy and dependable. We call someone who is like that "a person of honor."

In this lesson we will find out how Joseph who was one of the twelve sons of Jacob was a man of integrity.

Opening Prayer: "Father, Satan wants us to sin because sin separates us from You. That's why you hate sin so much. We always want to stay close to you so I pray that you will give us the desire in our hearts to say "No" to sin before we are even tempted. Then, give us the power of the Holy Spirit to say "no" to sin so that we might be blameless in your eyes. In Jesus' name, I pray. Amen."

Memory Verse: The memory verse is I John 1:9 says " If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness."

Lesson Video: https://youtu.be/BwbxkNOAsHs Joseph was one of the twelve sons of Jacob. He liked to hear his father Jacob tell about the promises God had made to Joseph's great-grandfather, Abraham and his grandfather, Isaac, Joseph trusted God with all his heart, and he wanted to obey God.

Because Jacob loved Joseph more than his other sons he gave him a beautiful coat of many colors. This made his brothers very jealous of Joseph.

As a boy Joseph had two dreams. One was about ten sheaves of grain bowing down to his sheaf.

Another dream was about the sun and moon and ten stars bowing down to him. These dreams which were from God told Joseph that someday his brothers and father would bow down to him.

When Joseph told his brothers and father about the dream everyone was very upset. The brothers were especially angry and hated Joseph so much that they began to plot how they would kill him.

One day when Joseph came to see his brothers who were in a field taking care of the sheep, they saw him coming and decided to kill him.

The ten brothers grabbed Joseph and ripped off his coat of many colors. Although they were going to kill him, one brother named Reuben convinced the others to throw him into a pit instead.

Joseph was terrified and called and called to brothers to let him go but they didn't! They paid no attention to his cries. Then Rueben left while the others sat down to eat.

While they were eating a Midianite caravan came by and Joseph's brothers decided to sell him as a slave to these traders.

They dragged Joseph out of the pit and handed him over to the slave traders. The brothers got twenty pieces of silver as payment. All of Joseph's begging and pleading did no good. They just greedily divided up the money among themselves and were happy they were forever rid of him.

To cover up their sin, the brothers took Joseph's coat of many colors and put the blood of goat on it. They showed it to their father and told a lie. They said that a wild animal must have killed Joseph and that they had found his coat.

Joseph's father Jacob was very upset. He wept and wept and grieved over the loss of his son Joseph. What a cruel trick Joseph's brothers played on their elderly father. Jacob cried and cried for many days.

Meanwhile, poor Joseph, sad, weary, and homesick, was walking on the long, dusty journey to Egypt with the Midianite caravan. Why, he wondered, had his brothers been so cruel to him? Why had they let these foreigners carry him off like this? Why had nobody come to look for him?

Finally, the Ishmaelite traders arrived in Egypt. Joseph must have been frightened at the strange land and the strange language. He saw big cities and huge temples for idol worship.

The Midianites sold Joseph as a slave to a man named Potiphar. Potiphar was a very wealthy man who worked for the pharaoh or president of Egypt. He was the captain of the guard. ,

The potiphar had a very elaborate home with beautiful gardens and many pools. Because the Potiphar served the king or pharaoh he was very rich. He needed many slaves to work for him.

Joseph was assigned many different jobs. He missed his family terribly—his father, his little brother Benjamin, and all the familiar things that he loved but his trust in God gave him the strength he needed. Joseph worked hard for his master and was successful in all that he did.

Potiphar was impressed with Joseph. He was different from all of Potiphar's other slaves, because the Lord was with him. After a while, the captain called Joseph to him and said, "Joseph, I've been watching you, and I like your work. I'm going to put you in charge of my household and all that I own. I trust you, because you are honest, pure, and upright."

The Lord blessed Joseph in all he did. Potiphar didn't have to worry about anything except what he wanted to eat! He knew he could rely on Joseph to manage everything!

Now Joseph was very handsome and well-built. After a while Potiphar's wife who was a very beautiful woman started admiring his looks and physique. She found it hard to control her feelings for him.

Every day the Potiphar's wife tried to get Joseph to do wrong. She said, "Come to bed with me!" she demanded. But Joseph refused. "Look," he told her, "my master trusts me with everything in the entire household including you. How could I do such a wicked thing and sin against God?

But she did not give up; she kept on pestering him day after day. Every day she spoke to Joseph but he refused to have an affair with her. He even took steps to avoid going near her. Joseph was saying "No" to temptation.

Then one day when all of the servants were out of the house, Potiphar's wife made a grab for him. "Come to bed with me!" she insisted. "You will do as I say."

Joseph struggled out of her grasp and ran out of the house. Joseph was doing what was right. He was running away from doing wrong!

As Joseph was jerking away from her his outer robe slipped off. Potiphar's wife was left holding the robe. How would she explain what had happened? She had to think fast. She began screaming for her servants!

The men around the palace came running in to see what had happened and found her crying hysterically." Then she began to lie to them and say, "Joseph tried to seduce me but I screamed and he ran off. Look, he left his cloak beside me." When her husband Potiphar came home, she told him the same story.

Potiphar was furious. He believed the lie that his wife told, and he had Joseph thrown into the king's prison—a dark, musty dungeon. Nobody believed the truth! Poor, innocent Joseph was now in jail. But Joseph knew that he had done what was right even though he was falsely accused and thrown into prison.

We all face temptation to do wrong every day. We can learn from Joseph some important ways to help us resist doing wrong.

First, we can say, "No!" Saying No means we do not want to do that which is wrong!

Potiphar's wife tempted Joseph day after day after day. She never stopped tempting him and every time Joseph refused. What did Joseph say to temptation? NO!

Another thing we can learn from Joseph was that he took drastic measures to run away from temptation! We need to do the same thing. We need to run away from things or people that will get us in trouble.

It is like this road sign says, "Go back you are going the wrong way." We need to get out of where we are! Why? Because we do not want to sin against God.

Sometimes even when we resist temptation we may have to suffer when others falsely accuse us. God is with us and He was with Joseph even when he was in prison. Even if we suffer for doing right, God knows and he will take care of us.

Every day we all face temptations. Sometimes we say yes to temptation instead of no. Every time we say yes to temptation we sin against God. God wants us to say no to wrong and yes to Him!

When we do sin against God we need to confess our sin to Him. If we have received Jesus as our Savior He has made a plan to cleanse us when we give in and say yes to temptation.

I John 1:9 says " If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness." When we sin we can tell God what we have done. He has promised to forgive us and cleanse or purify us from all unrighteousness.

Joseph knew that God is holy and hates sin. God hates your sin, too. But He loves you. That is why he sent Jesus to die on the cross and give His life's blood for you. He took the punishment for your sin. Will you choose to say "No" to sin and say "yes" to Jesus?

Let's pray. Father, Satan wants us to sin because sin separates us from You. Amen.

Remember let's obey God no matter what!

Review Questions: Temptation Game Print the following questions on individual cards and place the cards into a gift bag labeled "temptation" on the outside. Add at least 3 or 4 cards that say: "Gave into temptation" and place them in the bag with the questions. Divide your class into three or more groups. (If your class is small you can just have individuals play the game.) Say: "One person from your groups (or one individual) will select a card from the gift bag. Your group must answer the question correctly. If the words, "Gave into Temptation" appear on the card, then your group (that individual) is out of the game until we start again. Let's see which group (individual) can remain in the game the longest. " Invite the first group (or person) to select a card. Have that individual or group answer the question. Continue for all groups or individual until you have one group remaining. Replace the "Gave into Temptation" card back into the bag after it is drawn. 1. To what country was Joseph taken as a slave? (Joseph was taken to Egypt.) 2. How did Joseph end up at Potiphar's house? (His brothers had sold him to the Midianite traders

and they sold him to Potiphar as a slave.) 3. What did Joseph do at Potiphar's house? (He was the chief household slave in charge of

everything.) 4. Why did Potiphar give Joseph the highest position in his household? (Whatever he was asked to

do he did well and Potiphar was very pleased with Joseph's work.) 5. Why did everything that Joseph did in Potiphar's house prosper? (The Bible says that God made

everything that he did to prosper.) 6. What wrong thing did Potiphar's wife ask Joseph to do? (To go to bed with her; love her) 7. How did Potiphar's wife feel and what did she do when Joseph told her "No!"? (She got very

angry and tore her robe and then lied about Joseph to her husband.) 8. Why was it wrong for Joseph to go to bed with Potiphar's wife? (She was Potiphar's wife not

Joseph's. God says that only married people are to make love.) 9. Why did Joseph do when Potiphar's wife tempted him to do wrong? (He ran out of the house to

get away from her.) 10. What should you do when someone asks you to do something you know is wrong? (Say "no" to

sin and turn away from it.) 11. What happened to Joseph when Potiphar's wife lied about what had happened? (Potiphar sent

Joseph to prison.) 12. What did Joseph do in prison? (He was in charge of the other prisoners.) 13. What special power has God given to us to say "No" to sin? (God has given his children the

power of the Holy Spirit.) 14. When we do yield to temptation and sin what should we do? (Confess our sin to God and He will

forgive us and cleanse our hearts.)

Bible Memory Verse Activity: "Footprints" (Grades K-5) Say: Our memory verse is I John 1:9 says " If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness." Have students locate the verse in scripture. Say: " When we sin we can tell God what we have done. He has promised to forgive us and cleanse or purify us from all unrighteousness."

Preparation: Cut out 21 adult-size foot prints from poster board. On each footprint print each word of the memory verse--one word on each foot print. Hand out the foot prints and have the children put them in order according to the scripture. Ask the children to work as a group to make a pathway around the room, taping the footprints to the floor in correct verse order. When the verse pathway is complete ask one child to lead the others follow. The leader will say the verse as they walk along the path. Those who are following will echo it. Repeat a couple of times with new leaders.

Group Learning Activity: "Train Game" (Grades K-3) Say: "In this lesson we learned how Joseph had to go through many difficult situations in his life. God would allowed him to go through many problems in his life but God would take all the bad things and make them into good. These difficult things taught Joseph some important lessons like patience and forgiveness of others. Life is sometimes difficult for us but God gives us strength to move ahead despite our problems. Our life is sometimes like a train! Trains often have to pull really heavy loads. Sometimes it looks like they won't make it, but the engines keep tugging no matter what! This game will help us to learn how life is like that!" Preparation: Put down a long piece of tap and mark it as the "starting line". Put down another piece across the room and mark it "finish line." Procedure: Divide the children into equal teams and have them file behind a starting line. The first player in each team runs across the finish line and back. The second player "hooks on" and both run across the line and back. This continues until all of the players are in line aboard the "train." The first team to cross the starting line wins.

Group Learning Activity: "God was with Joseph" Discussion (Grades 3-5) Say: "In this lesson we learned how Joseph had to go through many difficult situations in his life. God would allowed him to go through many problems in his life but God would take all the bad things and make them into good. These difficult things taught Joseph some important lessons like patience and forgiveness of others. Life is sometimes difficult for us but God gives us strength to move ahead despite our problems." Say: "Today we are going to discuss how God used difficult situations in Joseph's life to prepare him for life as a ruler." Procedure: Have students look up the following passages: Romans 8:28; Acts 17:28a; 1 Corinthians 10:31; Philippians 2:13. Write the following statements on the whiteboard one at a time. Discuss the event in Joseph's life and tell what lessons Joseph would have learned that were needed to later become a ruler in Egypt.

1. Joseph had dreams as a child about the wheat and sheaves bowing to his bundle of wheat and the eleven stars bowing to the sun and moon. (This dream helped Joseph understand that God could tell him about the future through dreams. This was used later to interpret the baker's and butler's dream as well as the Pharaoh's dream. Joseph was learning to trust the wisdom of God.)

2. Joseph was betrayed by his brothers and sold as a slave to Potiphar. (This taught Joseph to trust that God was directing his life even if he could not see where the events would lead. Joseph had to learn how to forgive. Forgiveness is what God does for us when we confess our sin.)

3. Joseph was falsely accused and placed in prison. (God was placing him in prison so the appropriate people from the Pharaoh's court could come in contact with Joseph. God directs even the smallest circumstances in our life for His purpose, His glory, and our good.)

Group Learning Activity: "Taking the Heat" (Grades K-5) Procedure: Take some un-popped popcorn kernels and pass a few out to each child in your class. Ask them if they would like to have some popcorn. It obviously is not going to taste very good un-popped. Ask the class what has to be done to popcorn kernels to make it tasty popcorn (It has to be cooked, or heat applied to it). Have your aide with a couple of volunteers pop a bag of microwavable popcorn and bring it into the class. Let the children each sample some warm popcorn. What is different from the kernels they had seen before? The popcorn had to go through a “terrible trial”…it had to be cooked! Explain that difficult times are often compared to going through heat. We sometimes refer to a trial as a “fiery” trial. God often uses hard times to make us more usable for His kingdom, like the popcorn becomes more usable (and tastier) after it has “taken the heat.” Say: "In today’s lesson, Joseph went through fiery trials. Yet, through all his trials, the Lord was with Joseph, and his difficult circumstances would work together to fulfill God’s good purposes. God blesses those who are faithful in difficult times." Group Learning Activity: "Blessed or Not Blessed" (Grades 2-5) Preparation: Make two signs reading “blessed” and “not blessed' out of two squares of poster board. With masking tape adhere the two square signs to the floor across the room from each other. Procedure: As you read the following scenarios to the group, the class will decide if the person in the story is blessed or not blessed. To indicate the correct response have the students in the class run back and forth between the two signs. Remind them that we are blessed only when we’re persecuted for doing the right thing. Create additional scenarios if desired. Be sure to explain why the answer is correct in each situation.

The teacher asked the girl if she had really prayed for her friend at school to be healed of her cold. The girl said “yes” so the teacher told her not to ever do that again at school. (Not blessed.)

A boy took a book that did not belong to him from his neighbor. His mother found out and disciplined him. Then she made him return the book and apologize to the neighbor. (Blessed)

A boy was making a delivery for the grocery store to a little old widow. When he was almost there, he discovered that the store clerk had forgotten the milk, so he turned his bike around and went all the way back to the store. When the manager saw him and that he still had the groceries, he said, “Haven’t you delivered those groceries yet? You’re fired!” (Blessed)

A girl was babysitting for her neighbor when the phone rang. It was her good friend from school. While she talked on the phone, the baby got into some paint and got it all over the carpet. The girl was not asked to baby-sit anymore in the neighborhood. (Not blessed.)

A little girl could not find her favorite teddy bear. She looked all over the house. The girl finally found it on her brother’s bed. The mother punished the little brother for taking the bear, but the little girl later remembered that she had left the bear in his room. (Blessed)

Group Learning Activity: "Joseph's Life Time Line" (Grades 3-5) Preparation: Collect the following items: Bible, butcher paper, scissors, note cards, pencils or pens, colored markers, ruler, glue. Attach a long strip of butcher paper to the wall. Draw a thick horizontal line in the middle of the paper. Review the events in this lesson inviting volunteers to add events to the time line. Students are to write the events on the note cards and attach them to the time line in the appropriate order. Students may draw objects or stick figures to show the story events. Save the time line to use again for each lesson in this unit. Events from Lesson 4.1 to record were the Birth, Gift of coat, Dream about the Sheaves of Wheat, Dream about the Sun, Moon, and Stars, Joseph traveling to field; Brothers throwing Joseph into pit; Joseph being sold to the Midianites, Joseph traveling to Egypt.

Events from this lesson include: Joseph sold to Potiphar; Potiphar's wife tempts Joseph; Joseph put in prison.

Group Learning Activity: "Two-gether" Forever (Grades K-5) Say: "God was with Joseph in the pit, in Potiphar’s house, in prison, everywhere! He never left Joseph, even though sometimes Joseph had hard times that were not even his fault. Today we are going to play a game that illustrates how God is with us. It is called a “three-legged race.” Preparation: old rags or stockings for each team of racers; a belt; f you decide to use rags, cut them into wide strips about one yard long. Some people prefer to use old stockings because they are softer, but anything will do. Procedure: Have the children pair up. Then make two teams of pairs, splitting the class evenly. Have the children stand next to each other. Using a belt or piece of cloth, tie their legs together. Then have all the pairs line up. Tie one player's left leg to the other player's right leg and line the teams up! Practice walking together until you get a rhythm going and then try hopping or running. Using masking tape, make a line at the other end of the room. Have two pairs at a time race to the line and back. Then the next pairs will go. When all teams are steady, let the race begin! The first team to the finish line wins! Declare a winner and try again if time allows. Say: "God is always with us like our partners. He is helping us through difficult situations. He never leaves us or forsakes us."

Group Learning Activity: "Mouse-Trap" Object Lesson (Grades 2-5) Preparation: mousetrap; cheese Say: In our lesson Joseph was being tempted by Satan to do wrong. Temptation is like a mouse trap." (Show the mousetrap.) "Here is a mouse trap. We all know how this works. If I have a mouse on the loose in my house, I want to keep it out of the good supply of food in my kitchen. But I don’t want a mouse to thrive in my kitchen. So I need to distract it. I would put a piece of cheese in this trap - the smellier the better! The cheese has to smell so good to the mouse that it will distract it from the good food in my kitchen. When the mouse would come out at night looking for food, it would smell the stinky cheese. Before you know it, (Carefully, SNAP the trap.) SNAP! The mouse is caught. It can no longer get to the real food supply, and I can do whatever I want with the mouse. It is very similar with Satan. Satan spends his days and nights setting traps to distract people from the truth (1 Peter 5:8). It’s Satan’s goal to rob God of the worship that God deserves, because Satan is so jealous of God. Satan’s desire is that we worship anything or everything - except the one true God. Satan has many lies for people to choose from, and he doesn’t care which one they choose. Say: "You must be aware of Satan’s traps. His goal is to distract you from the only real source of life. Remember, he is “the father of lies” (John 8:44). He makes his lies sound really good. For example, he may offer you a “scientific” explanation for something that is against the Bible, or he may lead you to believe that you can run your own life without God. Remember that Satan’s lies are nothing more than stinky cheese! The only way to tell the truth apart from Satan’s lies is to know God’s word. Then you only have two choices. You can believe God and live, or you can believe Satan, and be caught in his trap. God wants you to believe Him to trust Him and to live!"

Group Learning Activity: "Sandpaper" Temptation Object Lesson (Grades 2-5) Purpose: The teacher will demonstrate how a piece of sandpaper is not too rough, but just rough enough to make a piece of wood smoother. This is similar to how the Lord allows us to be tested or to face certain temptations in our lives, but not beyond what we can bear. He does this to make us stronger and more mature (1Cor. 10:13; James 1:2-4). Preparation: Sandpaper; Small piece of soft wood; Trash can to catch sawdust Procedure: Say: "In our lesson Joseph went through many temptations. God used those temptations to help him become strong and a man of character. Today we are going to use a small piece of sandpaper, and a piece of wood to demonstrate how God worked in Joseph's life." "Does anyone know what I can do with these? That’s right; I can rub the sandpaper over the wood to make it smoother. I can even use the sandpaper to round off these edges. Can I have a volunteer verify that this is sandpaper? (Give to volunteer) I want you to feel the sandpaper, how does it feel? That’s right it is rough and scratchy. Now how can that sandpaper make a piece of wood smoother? Well let’s see how it works. (Take back the sandpaper and rub one edge of the wood to round it off.) See, it does work, even though the sandpaper is rough, it is rough just enough make the wood smoother. If I tried to use something too rough, like a brick, the wood would become rougher." "The sandpaper is sort of like the temptations and difficulties that Joseph and we face in our life. Our Lord knows just how much we can take. He always gives us the strength and ability we need to resist temptations and to get through the rough times. During the process, we become stronger, mature, "smoother" Christians. The Bible says, "God is faithful, he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, He will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it" (1Corinthians 10:13). The Bible also says, "Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything" (James 1:2-4). So, before a piece of wood can become a beautiful piece of furniture, it must be sanded. Likewise, in order for Joseph to become the ruler of Egypt and for a Christian to become stronger and more mature, they must go through some rough times."

Craft Learning Activity: Say NO to Sin! (Grades K-3) Say: "Jesus obeyed God when He said "No!" to sin. Today we are going to make a paper plate face that shows us saying "No!" to sin." Supplies Needed: paper plates; construction paper (red, brown, blue, yellow); glue; tape; and large craft stick or paint stir stick. Cut ears, nose and hair out of brown construction paper. Cut the eyes out of the blue construction paper. Cut the lips out of the red construction paper. Optional: Use colored yarn strings for hair. You can also use wiggly eyes for fun. Tape the craft stick or paint stir stick onto the paper plate to make a handle. Glue all parts of the face and hair onto the paper plate.

Craft Learning Activity: Temptation Mural (Grades 3-5) Bring a stack of old magazines or pictures from the newspaper. Say: "What does it mean to be tempted? (To be tempted means that we are tested by Satan to see if we will obey God or not.) Temptation is not a sin but when we yield to temptation and do what God says is wrong then it is a sin." Share some experiences from your life and what it means to do wrong. Have the students look through the magazines and newspaper and find pictures or articles that show people that were tempted and what decisions they made. Talk about alternatives to their decisions. Use the illustrations, pictures or articles to make a large mural. Glue the examples to a large sheet or roll of poster paper. Title the mural "Temptations To Do Wrong". Use the mural as a point of discussion for students to practically understand what temptations they may face.

Life Application Challenge: Five Fingers Have the children hold up one hand. Use the fingers on the hand to remember five ways God helps us when we are tempted. Point to a finger as you give each idea.

Point to the thumb and say, Know what Jesus wants you to do. Tell the children how to know what Jesus wants them to do. Say, First, you must know God’s Word. You should read the Bible and learn Bible verses. These verses will help you make the right choice, just as they helped Jesus.

Point to the first finger and say, Ask God to help you make right choices. Spend time each day praying to God. Ask Him to help you do what is right.

Point to the second finger and say, Ask other Christians to help you. It is important to talk to other Christians when you are tempted to do wrong. Other Christians can pray for you. They can tell you what helps them to do right.

Point to the third finger and say, Tell the devil to go away. Remember, Jesus told the devil to go away. Do not listen to temptation.

Point to the fourth finger and say, Stay away from people, places, and things that make you want to do wrong. Stay away from people who try to get you to do wrong things. Stay away from places where you should not go and away from things you should not do.

Practice saying the five points using your fingers. Have the children point to each finger as you talk about it. Tell the children to let others know how God is helping them. Say, "When you let others know how God is helping you, it helps them."
