What happened to Alias?
He was caught and put into prison because of blowing up government building. Then he spent 4 years in prison, where he met Mandela again and learned a lot. At last he got a job to take tourists around his old prison.

Good things:
1. Mandela started a school in the prison.
2. Elias became a good student.
3. He realized he was clever enough to do a degree.
Bad things:
1.He was beaten.
2.The guards were cruel.
3.Some people died in prison.
4. Elias was not allowed to take a degree in prison.
Some phrases and new words:
1. escape vi. 逃脱 , 避开 , 溜走 vt. 逃避 , 避免 , 被忘掉
eg. He escaped from prison.
No one can escape from being punished if he breaks the law.
2. should have done sth 本该完成却未能做成 eg. You should have passed the exam. But
unfortunately, he did not.
3. educate vt. 教育 , 训练 , 培养 educated adj.
eg. He is well educated.
Parents should educate kids to obey rules from the beginning.
4. come to power = take office 上台;当权eg. When did this government come to power?
When Mrs Thatcher came to power in 1979, nobody expected her to stay there for 13 years.
He had won much popular support and understanding before he took office.
in power = in the government 执政 take /seize power = get power through violence

The general had tried to take power, but he failed at last.

Make a list of the personal qualities you think
Mandela has shown in his life. Put them
together to compare your lists with another
group. This will make sure that you do not
overlook an important aspect of Mandela’s life.
Then begin to organise your writing . Put your
ideas into any order that seems sensible to
yourselves and add the reasons or details to the
ideas.
Writing: Before writing you can follow the steps
Make sure that you give reasons for your
opinions. If you are writing about Mandela’s
qualities you can concentrate on two or three.
If you are describing his life then you should
group his life into periods: his studies, work for
the ANC and its results, fight against anti-
black laws, life in prison, after being released
from Robben Island. Then you can either
describe one period in your own words or
describe the development in his life and ideas.
Once the writing is completed, swap it
with a partner and improve each other’s
work. Remember to check grammar,
punctuation and spelling.
Then rewrite the passage.
We will make assessment on your
work.

Nelson Mandela is the former President of Sou
th Africa and the founder of the Nelson Mandela Fo
undation. He joined the African National Congress
(ANC) in 1944 and was engaged in resistance agai
nst the ruling National Party's apartheid policies si
nce 1948. From 1964 to 1982, he was incarcerated
at Robben Island Prison. Mr Mandela is widely acc
epted as the most significant black leader in South
Africa and became a potent symbol of resistance a
s the anti-apartheid movement gathered strength.

He consistently refused to compromise his po
litical position to obtain his freedom. After his
release in 1990, Mr Mandela plunged himself
wholeheartedly into his life's work, striving to
attain the goals he and others had set out alm
ost four decades earlier. In 1991, Mr Mandela
was elected President of the ANC and in 1994
he was elected President of South Africa, a po
sition he held until 1999 when he retired from
public life.
