5 Margaret cut out six felt shapes in her craft class. She labeled each shape with a letter.

Part A Which shapes have one or more right angles?

Solution

Part B Describe shapes A, B, C, and D based on the kinds of sides they have.

6 Part A Draw all the lines of symmetry for each figure.

Part B Each figure has sides of equal length and angles of equal measure. For each figure, compare the number of sides, number of angles, and number of lines of symmetry. Write a sentence that describes the pattern.

Part C How many lines of symmetry can be drawn in a 7-sided polygon where all the sides are the same length and all the angles have the same measure? Sketch and check your solution.

Solution

Unit 6 Interim Assessment continued

Answer the questions and show all your work on separate paper.

Your Uncle Asher has a new bakery opening soon and has asked you to help him design a logo for the shop sign. He emailed you to say the shop will be called Asher’s Sweets and described his idea for the shape of the logo:

My logo is three shapes put together. One of the shapes is a 5-sided figure with exactly two parallel sides, exactly two right angles, and one line of symmetry. The other two shapes are exactly alike. Each one is an isosceles triangle. The bottom of each triangle—the side that is a different length from the other two—matches up to one of the parallel sides of the 5-sided figure.

Draw your uncle’s logo idea on grid paper. Then use geometric shapes to create another logo for him to consider. Draw the logo and describe it in a note to your uncle using the terms parallel, perpendicular, line of symmetry, acute, obtuse, and any other geometry vocabulary from this unit.

ReflectUse Mathematical Practices After you complete the task, choose one of the following questions to answer.

• Be Precise Why is it important that you know the meaning of the geometry terms in your description?

• Argue and Critique Suppose you asked your uncle to draw a logo matching your description. Do you think his drawing will match what you had in mind? Explain your answer.

ChecklistDid you . . .

follow the instructions for the first logo?

use a ruler?

use vocabulary correctly?
