UNIT 7. I SUGGESTED GOING TO…

7.1. Introduction

The name of our following unit is I SUGGESTED GOING TO…

In this unit we are going to review some vocabulary

related to the cinema and theatre. I hope you learn

new words that you didn’t know. As for the

grammar I would like to teach you the Reported

speech and some reported verbs. We will also study

when to use get/be used to and used to and will

learn the meaning and differences among them.

Practice your listening and reading once more, and do the different exercises

you have in the unit.

Enjoy, play and learn!

7.2. Listening

It’s time to practice the listening. Listen to the first dialogue and without reading

it, do the exercise. Then be ready to do a dictation.

7.2.1 Listening 1

Listen to the following dialogue between Susan and me. I suggested going to

the cinema, but Susan said to me she didn’t like movies very much.

Matthew: Susan, what can we do today? What about going to the cinema? Do

you like going to the cinema?

Susan: Not much and I don't watch too many movies. I don't like many of the

big or what Americans call "blockbuster" movies. To me they are too

predictable, too "feel good" and they rely on one or two stars to carry the

movie. And they always have to have a happy ending.

In the last few years, many movies have too much special effects and action

scenes that are hard to believe and after a few minutes become boring. For

example, in the most recent James Bond movie, there are so many scenes

where the bad guys shoot 50-100 bullets at him, he dodges them all and fires

once and hits and kills his enemy. Come on!

Matthew: Yes, I agree with you. That’s true. Anyway, do you have any favourite

actor or actress?

Susan: I like Kate Hudson...she's very cute. And I like Angelina Jolie. I think

her husband Brad Pitt is a good actor too, but I really like some of the old actors

like Sean Connery and Sophie Loren. They are the best!

7.2.2. Exercise

1. After listening the dialogue tick the statements that are said in it:

1. I don't like many of the big movies.

2. Movies always have to have a happy ending.

3. I like movies with special effects.

4. I like James Bond.

5. I don’t like Kate Hudson.

2. Now you are going to write a dictation. Listen and write the following text

relating to the cinema:

7.4. Grammar

There are two ways of expressing what someone has said: with the direct

speech, and with the reported speech (indirect). Here we will see that. Pay

attention!

7.4.1. Reported Speech

It is to repeat exactly the same words that someone said. In writing English it

is between quotation marks (“…”), and the sentence begins with capital letter.

E.g.: John said: “You are lucky”.

My mother asked me ”Where do you go now?”

Reported (indirect) speech

It is used when we repeat what someone said, but not exactly with the same

words. It has not interrogative form.

The sentence order is: SUBJECT+VERB, and never at the contrary.

E.g.: The boy told me that I was lucky.

My mother asked me where I went.

Now let’s study the reported speech deeply.

General ideas

Here we are some general ideas about the reported speech:

As we have said before, reported speech is used to say what someone has

said but not with the same words, and it has not interrogative form.

The order in these sentences is: SUBJECT + VERB.

There are some changes when we change a sentence from direct to

reported speech. We have to change subjects, verbal tenses, adverbs (as

we will see later).

“Said” and “asked” (apart from other verbs that we will see later) are used

Inglés Intermedio Bajo (B1). I suggested going to… 7.11

in the reported speech. So they are reported verbs.

E.g.: Mary asked me for help.

John said that he was ill.

“THAT” is used in reported speech. It goes after “say”, “tell”. It can be

omitted, but it is used to make the sentence more formal.

E.g.: He said that John is his best friend.

My father told me (that) he is in Lisbon.

Imperatives

To form sentences in reported speech from imperatives (orders) we usually

use the verb “tell”.

When the imperative is positive, in reported speech we put TO before the verb.

Remember that TELL needs a personal object to show whom it refers to.

E.g.:

In negative imperatives we use NOT TO before the infinitive.

E.g.:

Direct speech Reported speech

“Look!” my mother said. My mother told me to look.

“Be careful”, Mary said. Mary told me to be careful.

Direct speech Reported speech

“Don’t speak!” the teacher said. The teacher told us not to

speak.

“Don’t do that!” my friend said. My friend told them not to do

that.

Inglés Intermedio Bajo (B1). I suggested going to…7.12

Affirmative sentences

When the content of the sentence is recent we can use the reporting verb in

present.

E.g.: Peter says (that) he wants to meet her.

Mary says (that) he is coming this evening.

When it is not recent, the reporting verb changes the tense.

E.g.:

Be careful!!

In the reported speech there can be changes in the tenses, times, places,

pronouns, demonstratives. (We will see that later)

Questions

In indirect questions we use the verb ASK. The form depends on the form of

the original question.

If the question began with a verb (do, does, did, are, etc.) the reported

sentence is formed this way:

E.g:Direct: “Are you German?”, Peter asked me.

Indirect: Peter asked (me) if I was German.

When the original question began with an interrogative pronoun (who, what,

where, etc.) the form is the following:

Direct Reported“I’m the most handsome”, the

boy said.

The boy said (that) he was the

most handsome.

“You are pretty”, the girl said. The girl said that I was pretty.

SUBJECT+ ASKED+(PERSONALOBJECT) + IF/WETHER +SUBJECT+

VERB+ COMPLEMENTS

SUBJECT+ASKED+(PERSONAL OBJECT) +WH-WORD+ SUBJECT+

VERB+ (COMPLEMENT)

Inglés Intermedio Bajo (B1). I suggested going to… 7.13

E.g.: Direct: The man asked me: “Where do you live?”

Reported: The man asked (me) where I lived.

Because the indirect sentence is not a question, the auxiliary verb (do, did,

etc) is not necessary.

Changes

When we change a direct sentence into a reported speech one, we have to

make some changes.

Changes in personal pronouns

It is usually necessary to change the pronouns in reported speech, because it

is not the same person who talks.

E.g.: Paul said: “I like chocolate cake” (direct)

Paul said (that) he liked chocolate cake. (indirect)

Changes in verb tenses

If the verb that introduces the sentence is in the past, there are some changes

in the verbs from the original sentence. It has to be correct to communicate,

because maybe it is some time ago since that happened.

E.g.: John said: “I am very sad”

John said that he was very sad.

When the introducing verb is in the present, future, or present perfect, the

tenses are usually the same than the original sentence’s ones.

Inglés Intermedio Bajo (B1). I suggested going to…7.14

Verbs changes:

There are some that don’t change: Past Perfect, Past Perfect continuous, could,

would, should, might, ought to, had better, used to.

7.4.2. Reported verbs

As we have seen before, there are some verbs used in the reported speech.

Let’s see!

Here we will study these three reported verbs: tell, say and ask. Let’s see when

to use each one:

Tell

We use “tell” in imperatives and advices to form the reported speech.

After “tell” it is necessary a personal object and we don’t use “that”.

Inglés Intermedio Bajo (B1). I suggested going to… 7.15

E.g.: The boss told him to tidy the room.

The girl told me to give her a present.

Say

It is more used than “tell” in direct speech. But we can use “tell” as well as

“say” in affirmative and negative sentences in the reported speech.

When we use “say” we don’t need a personal object. Remember that with “tell”

it is necessary.

E.g.: I said (that) I was thirsty.

He said (that) he was ill.

Ask

We use “ask” for questions in reported speech. The form depends on the

original question. As we have said before, when the original question begins

with an auxiliary verb (do, does, did, have, etc.) in reported speech the order

is:

E.g.: Direct speech: Susan asked: “Are you rich?”

Reported speech: Susan asked me if I was rich.

And when the original question begins with a wh- word (when, where, etc.)

the reported sentence is:

E.g.: Direct speech: The man asked: “When is the meeting?”

Reported speech: The man asked me when the meeting was.

7.4.3. Used to/ be used to/ get used to

Here we will study “used to”, “be used to” and “get used to”. We will learn the

meaning of each one, the difference among them, and some examples.

Used to

“Used to” refers to a repeated action in the past, which now doesn’t happen.

That is, it is used to talk about something that happened in the past and now

it doesn’t.

E.g.: When I was a child I used to play with toys.

In negative, it is “didn’t use to”.

E.g.: I didn’t use to go on holidays when I was a baby.

For questions we use “did…use to…?”

E.g.: What did people use to do before the radio was invented?

Don’t confuse “used to” with “be used to” and “get used to” (that we will see

later). And the verb “use” that means “employ or utilise”.

Be/get used to

“Be/get used to” is an expression that means “to be accustomed to something

or doing something”.

E.g.: I am used to going to London.( accustomed)

The structure is:

E.g.: He is used to hens.

I am used to cars.

SUBJECT + BE/GET+ USED TO + OBJECT/ VERB (-ING)

Inglés Intermedio Bajo (B1). I suggested going to… 7.17

If the object involves a verb we use –ing form. We use that because “to” in

this case is a preposition, and after prepositions we use the gerund.

E.g.: I am not used to riding horses.

He is used to working hard.

I got used to wearing jeans.

We use this expression when something is familiar or easy for us.

E.g.: I am used to driving.

It can be used with any tense. We have to conjugate the verb “to be”.

E.g.: I was used to cold weather.

Be/get used to is followed by a noun or a gerund. If you get used to

something, or doing something, that means that you are familiar with that.

It can be referred to past, present or future.

E.g.: I get used to wearing high heels.

Do not confuse I am used to doing (be/get used to) and I used to do. They are

different in structure and meaning.

In summary, “be/get used to” means that something is normal for us.

“used to” refers to a repeated action in the past, which now doesn’t happen.

7.5. Reading

7.5.1. Texts

Reading is a receptive skill and can help build vocabulary that helps listening

comprehension. So, let’s read!

Read the following text. It is the answer to the question: What’s cinema?

written by Glen Norton.

Then you can read what I have written about my favourite movie and actor.

We might as well ask "What is life?", for film, like life, is made of moments;

moments in time, held aloft for our perusal, imprinted on our soul, and then

brought back to us from time to time as a memory - by an event, a vision, a

sound, an emotion. The separation becomes trivial - cinema is life, and life

cinema: around us, beside us, inside us. The cinema, then, is not to be

consumed with haste; films are not to be digested simply as they unfold, like

some plastic-wrapped fast-food. Created by light and celluloid, they live only

in our minds and in our hearts, savoured both during and after the fact.

Projected onto the screen and into our consciousness, where they are replayed

over and over -- continually re-discovered artefacts which are constantly

changing us. What, then, can we say is truly real? A memory? An event? A

celluloid image? The answer lies in the cinema. All is real. Nothing is

impossible.

Glen Norton

My favourite actor and film

Over the years a great deal of movies has been produced and to choose the

one which I consider my favourite among these would be an arduous task.

However, based on my viewing and my infatuation with American actor and

Oscar Award winner Tom Hanks, I would have to pick Forrest Gump as my

favourite movie. It is quite a remarkable film and an absolute must-see. It falls

into the genre of Romantic Drama, which is the genre I like the most.

Inglés Intermedio Bajo (B1). I suggested going to…7.22

I love this movie. It is about the life of a simple man, who wasn’t the smartest

or loved by many, but who achieved great things throughout his life. However,

despite all his attainments, he was unable to conquer the heart of his one true

love. Forrest Gump managed to succeed in all his challenges, and proved that

love is more important than ability. This movie makes the spectator look inward

and it makes you laugh and cry at several times. It is a reminder of the fact

that no matter what challenges we face in life, we can achieve whatever we

put our mind to.

Overall I’m very fond of Romance movies. I enjoy plots that revolve around

love, having, keeping it and making it last. Although it involves strong

emotions, as drama movies do, the focus of a romance movie is on love itself.

Women are the likely audience of this genre, but I like it too You don’t always

have to expect a happy ending in a Romance movie; sometimes, the ending

can be bittersweet or even tragic.

Tom Hanks is my favourite actor of all time. His acting capability unleashes all

sorts of emotions in the audiences of the movies in which he stares. I used to

like Julia Roberts, but for me now he is a top actor, by all means!

7.5.2. Reading Comprehension

7.8. English World

We continue going hiking, mountaineering, and canyoneering. We are now

exploring Zion National Park, the most popular of the five Utah National Parks,

and Glen Canyon.

Zion National Park

Being here is like a view into the past. It is at its photogenic

best during stormy winter weather. It’s a good experience

walking the trail along the river, watching as stray clouds

trapped in the twisting canyons creep up the cliffs as they

struggle for freedom in the open sky, and as isolated rays

of sunshine break through the dark sky and illuminate the

park's regal monuments.

Zion National Park includes 150,000 acres of wild canyon

country east of St. George, Utah, including the narrow,

multicoloured Kolob Canyons to the north and many miles of largely

impenetrable mountain wilderness. There, wildlife lives such as mule deer,

golden eagles, and mountain lions. Don’t miss it!

Glen Canyon National Park

We also went to visit this park. Glen Canyon National

Recreation Area (Glen Canyon NRA or GCNRA) is a

recreation and conservation unit of the National Park

Service (USA).

Glen Canyon is so beautiful. The colours of the rocks and

the lake are so gorgeous!!

I just want to advise you that if you want to rent a house boat,

jet ski or some sort of water recreation thing, you definitely have to have

advance notice right away! We tried to get one the day we got there, and they

were all sold out. However, we went to Wal-Mart not too far away and picked

up swim tubes and went in the water. The water is clean, and very comfortable.

It is really such a beautiful place to go and see. It is so pretty.

Zion National Park. Wildlife

Susan is right: Zion National Park is a must. The first thing that we were said

when we arrived here was not to feed animals. We could read a big poster:

Do not feed the animals!

There are several reason for that: wild animals become unhealthy from eating

human food and grow dependent on it as a food source. Often animals that

are fed become trouble and must be destroyed. It is also against the law to

feed any wild animal.

There are many large mammals in Zion: Coyotes, Wolves, Bears…

For these animals the park is a place of peace and refuge. Wildflowers are

common throughout the park, particularly in spring and fall. It was a pity but

couldn’t see many flowers!
