9-S Scene: Hollywood!

Before 1903 Hollywood was a small, quiet town with fewer than six hundred people. In 1911 it became part of Los Angeles. In the 1920s Hollywood became the movie capital of the world. Will it always be the film capital?

Where are the movie stars nowadays? Can you still see them on the streets of Hollywood? Why, of course. Well, you can see them on this street right off Hollywood Boulevard, on a mural. Do you see any "stars" that you know? Who? Hollywood, is it reality or just fantasy?

Today "Hollywood" still means "the movies". There are many old movie theaters along Hollywood Boulevard. Some of these old theaters are not movie theaters anymore. The Pantages has plays and musicals now. You can see that murals are everywhere in L.A.

On Las Palmas Street right off Hollywood Blvd. there is a long newsstand. You can find newspapers and magazines from all over the world here. You can go to church in Hollywood too, believe it or not. There are lots of little theaters that do interesting plays, and of course restaurants on side streets off the main boulevards. They serve good pizza at this restaurant.

Do you need some tourist information? Here's a visitor's center at Highland Avenue and Hollywood Boulevard. Notice the stars on the sidewalks of Hollywood Blvd.

Along Hollywood Blvd. you can visit one of the most interesting movie theaters in the world, the Chinese Theater. This movie theater opened in 1927. This is Hollywood fantasy at its best. Tourists who come from everywhere want to see and touch the footprints, handprints and signatures of over 160 movie stars. Do you see any names that you know? Do you want a photo of yourself here next to your favorite movie star's footprints?

Are you ready for a tour of the studios or the "stars'" homes? Maybe another time. We need to hurry now. Do we have time for a drink at this hotel, or lunch at that Japanese restaurant in the Hollywood Hills? Not now. Let's get a quick hamburger here.

Not far from Hollywood Blvd. in the Hollywood Hills you can find houses of every type. Highland Avenue is busy and noisy, but you can find peace and quiet in the hills. Right on Highland Avenue is the Il Vittoriale Theater. Some of the newest plays are at this theater. Just up the road from this theater on Cahuenga Boulevard is the Hollywood Bowl. We will come back here for a concert in the summer.

Right now we are going up into the hills to take a drive along Mulholland Drive. Mulholland Dr. runs along the top of the Hollywood Hills, which are a part of the Santa Monica Mountains. The ride along Mulholland is especially pretty in the springtime after it rains. The California poppies, the state flower, come out in the spring.

There's the Hollywood freeway below us going toward downtown. You can see downtown L.A. today. Sometimes you can't see it from here when it is too smoggy. But you can always see the Hollywood Bowl from this spot because it is right below us. There are wonderful outdoor concerts here in the summer. The L.A. Philharmonic plays here then. There are also jazz, rock, and other concerts here, too. There are over 17,000 seats at the Bowl.

Let's go up there for a view of Hollywood. Look! There's the "Bowl" again with Hollywood behind it. There's another Hollywood Hills home. What a view they have!

On the other side of the Santa Monica Mountains is the San Fernando Valley. This is "Hollywood" too. This is the Universal Amphitheater, where there is entertainment all year. There are many movie and television studios there in Burbank. Universal, Disney, and the Burbank studios are all here, just on the other side of Hollywood.

Here is another view of Universal City, a city within a city. There's the Hollywood freeway, this time going north into the "Valley". Let's continue west on Mulholland Drive.

Let's get out of the car and walk a little and take a look at the interesting houses in the hills around us. Here comes a jogger. Well, let's be on our way again.

Here's a view of the western part of the San Fernando Valley. Can you see the office buildings on Ventura Boulevard in the distance? There are also many fine jazz clubs along Ventura Blvd.

Notice the swimming pools. Is anyone swimming in them? Well, you may want to swim, but remember, we are in a hurry. Here's Laurel Canyon Boulevard. We will turn left here and leave the "Valley" side of L.A. We are on our way to Sunset Boulevard!

Susan: How was your meal? Joe: It was great! Everything was delicious. Ann: You were really hungry, weren't you? Joe: Yes, I was. It was my first meal today. I didn't eat

morning and then walked to Chinatown. Susan: I'll drive. I know the way better than you. Richard: I know the way now. Let me drive. Susan: No, I'll drive. You relax and enjoy the ride and the

sights of Los Angeles. You're not going to be here much longer.

Richard: What do you mean? Susan: Well, you said that you were going to Chicago soon,

didn't you? Richard: Well, I'm not really sure. I'm supposed to go back to

Chicago at the end of the month, but...

(All get in the car, Ann and Joe in the back seat, Richard and Susan in front. Susan is in the driver's seat.)

Susan: Why don't you stay here in L.A., Richard? You seem

to like it here better than Chicago. Richard: Well, I still need to think about it for awhile. What do

you think, Ann? Ann: That's your decision. Do what you really want to do.

Remember, L.A. is the place you do whatever you want to do, right?

(All laugh. Susan starts the car -- they leave for Ann's house. All get out of the car. Ann and Susan walk up to Ann's place together. Joe and Richard walk a little behind them.)

Joe: Is it possible for you to move to L.A.? What about

your job in Chicago? Richard: I can change jobs if I want. My company in Chicago

has an office here in L.A. Joe: What about your family? You have a girlfriend in

Chicago, don't you? Richard: Well of course, my family will miss me and I will miss

them if I decide to stay in L.A. Joe: And your girlfriend? Richard: I don't really care what she thinks right now. Joe: Why not? Richard: We aren't getting along. Joe: Is that why you came to L.A.? Richard: Well, maybe. I don't know. I need a change. I need

a real change and Los Angeles is really different from Chicago.

Joe: That's for sure.

(All go inside Ann's house.) Ann: What time is it? Richard: It's 6:40. Ann: It's getting late. I would like to invite you to stay for

coffee, but I have an appointment downtown at 7:00. Richard: Well, let's be on our way. Susan: What are you all doing tomorrow? It's Saturday, and

the weather is going to be beautiful.

Joe: I don't have any plans. Ann: Neither do I. Richard: I don't either. Susan: Do you want to go to a park for a picnic? Ann: Yes, I do. Joe: So do I. Richard: So do I. Sounds good to me. Susan: What park do you want to go to, Elysian Park or

Griffith Park? Ann: It doesn't matter to me which park we go to. They're

both nice. Joe: It doesn't matter to me either. Richard: Well, I'd like to go to Griffith Park. I'd like to see the

Observatory and the laser show. I hear it's really something.

Susan: O.K. Let's go to Griffith Park. Ann: Why don't we go to Ferndell for the picnic? It isn't far

from the Observatory. Joe: Yeah, and it isn't far from Hollywood either. We can

go there after the picnic if you want. Richard: Hollywood! At last, I'm going to see Hollywood! Will

I see movie stars? Ann: I doubt it. But you're with one right now. Richard: Who? Ann: Joe.

(Everyone laughs.) Susan: So, who's going to bring the food? Ann: Well, let Richard take care of the food. Richard: What? Ann: I thought you said you were a good cook. Richard: Well, that's right, but anyone can cook hamburgers

and hot dogs. Ann: Well, if anyone can do it, why don't you?

(Ann and Susan laugh.) Susan: I'll help you, Richard. You can come over to my

house tonight and we'll make the food together. Richard: O.K. Joe: Do you want me to bring anything? Susan: No, that's O.K. We'll take care of everything. Joe: O.K. I'll pay for the laser show at the Planetarium.

Ann: Can't I bring something? Susan: Well,... Ann: I'll bring something to drink, O.K.? Susan: O.K. Fine. Ann: So, you want to meet here again tomorrow? Joe: That's fine with me. Susan: That's O.K. with me, too. Richard: Susan's the driver. You'll pick me up tomorrow,

won't you, Susan? Susan: Yes, I will. Ann: So, about 11 o'clock, here? Joe: Fine. Susan and Richard: Yeah, that's good. Ann: O.K. We'll see you here tomorrow at 11:00. Everyone: 'Bye.

paper this morning it was 45 degrees in Chicago. Ann: That's cold for May, isn't it? Richard: Yeah, but sometimes spring comes late back there. Joe: Let's go. I'm getting hungry. Susan: You're always hungry. Ann: He doesn't get enough to eat. I'll bet you don't cook

for yourself. Joe: Yes, I do. Who do you think cooks for me? There's

nobody except me at home. I'm very liberated.

Susan: Let's not start this argument again. Joe: What are you talking about? Susan: Never mind. It's not important. Joe: What do you mean, "never mind"? Tell me. Susan: O.K. Before we met you yesterday, we discussed

"women's liberation" on the way to the restaurant. Ann: Well, it wasn't really a discussion. Joe: O.K. It doesn't matter what it was. I'm for freedom

for everybody. Ann: And you're hungry too, right? Joe: Yes, I am. Let's go. Richard: Right. Let's go. Ann: The basket.

(Everyone is getting ready to eat.) Ann: I think I'll have a hamburger. I ate chicken last night. Susan: Oh dear! We forgot ketchup and mustard! Ann: Well, we can't eat hamburgers and hot dogs without

ketchup. Joe: Here. I have some ketchup. I knew you were going

to forget something, so I brought some things in my backpack.

(Ann opens bottle.) Ann: Richard, would you pass me the ketchup? Richard: Sure. Susan: Pass the bread please, Joe. Joe: This chicken is good. Ann: Can you pass the salad dressing, Joe? Joe: Sure. Ann: Thank you.

(All begin eating the dessert.) Richard: Can you give me a piece of cake? Ann: I already gave you one. Richard: I know. I want another piece. It's so good. Susan: We have watermelon for dessert, too, if you want

some. Joe: Look, did you see that? Richard: What? I didn't see anything. Joe: It was over there by the stream. I saw an animal. Ann: You're kidding. Maybe it was a dog or cat. Joe: I don't think so. Susan: Well, let's take a walk down the path and see.

(All get up and start walking down the trail.) Richard: There aren't any animals here except some birds and

maybe a few squirrels.

(Now Richard and Susan are walking together and Ann and Joe are walking together.)

Richard: I'm going to stay in LA. Susan: When did you decide that?

Richard: Last night after I left your place. I really like it here.

And now I know I have some friends here, too. Joe: I think that Richard's going to stay in L.A. He seems

to like it here. Ann: Yes, he does. He's a nice guy. Joe: Do you know him very well? Ann: I met him a few years ago in Chicago. Susan and I

took a trip in 1981. But I'm really just getting to know him here.

Richard: Ann and Joe seem to like each other, don't they? Susan: Yes, they do, I guess. Joe seems to make friends

easily. He has lots of friends. Richard: And Ann does too, doesn't she? Susan: Yes.

(Ann throws litter into a trash can. All come back together.)
