AoI Focus ~ Environments
• How forms of energy (renewable and non-renewable) are affecting our planet.
• How the future of energy use can change how we live and its future affects on the environment.
• The effects of our actions, attitudes and constructs, such as sustainable development and conservation

Fuels
• Can you name some different Fuels?
• What do we use them for?
• What different forms of Fuel exist?
• Can you give a definition for Fuels?
• Are Fuels valuable? If yes, why?
Fuel & Energy
• Fuels: the burning of something to allow things/work to happen.
• Fuels are sources of heat, light and movement (these are all forms of energy)
• Energy: is what burning fuels release to make things happen.
Energy
• Energy Is the Ability To Do Work• Energy comes in different forms:• Heat (thermal) • Light (radiant) • Motion (kinetic) • Electrical • Chemical • Nuclear energy • Gravitational
Renewable vs Non-renewable Energy
• Energy Sources Can be Grouped As Renewable or Nonrenewable
• Renewable - an energy source that can be easily replenished
• Nonrenewable -an energy source that we are using up and cannot recreate
Renewable Energy (Alternative Energy)
• Renewable energy sources including biomass, hydropower, geothermal, wind, and solar provide 7% of the energy used in the United States. Most renewable energy goes to producing electricity.
• Solar energy from the sun, which can be turned into electricity and heat
• Wind energy from moving air • Geothermal energy from heat inside the Earth • Biomass from plants, which includes firewood from trees,
ethanol from corn, and biodiesel from vegetable oil • Hydropower from hydroturbines at a dam
Non-renewable Energy
• The four nonrenewable energy sources used most often are:
• Oil and petroleum products — including gasoline, diesel fuel, and propane
• Natural gas
• Coal
• Uranium (nuclear energy)
Fossil Fuels
• Nonrenewable energy sources come out of the ground as liquids, gases, and solids. Crude oil (petroleum) is the only commercial non-renewable fuel that is naturally in liquid form. Natural gas and propane are normally gases, and coal is a solid.
• Fossil Fuels – fuels that come from fossils (dead organisms)
• Fossil Fuels Are Non-renewable, but Not All Non-renewable Energy Sources Are Fossil Fuels
• Coal, Natural Gas & Oil are Fossil Fuels • Nuclear Energy is not a Fossil Fuel
