    Targeted State Frameworks/Content Standards/Benchmarks:

Student Objectives/Learning Outcomes: Students will1 Use technology and mathematics to improve investigations and

communications. A variety of technologies, such as hand tools, measuringinstruments, and calculators, should be an integral component of scientificinvestigations. The use of computers for the collection, analysis, and display of data is also a part of this standard. Mathematics plays an essential role in allaspects of an inquiry. For example, measurement is used for posing questions, formulas are used for developing explanations, and charts and graphs are usedfor communicating results.

2 Communicate and defend a scientific argument. Students in school scienceprograms should develop the abilities associated with accurate and effectivecommunication. These include writing and following procedures, expressingconcepts, reviewing information, summarizing data, using language

appropriately, developing diagrams and charts, explaining statistical analysis, speaking clearly and logically, constructing a reasoned argument, andresponding appropriately to critical comments.

3 Propose designs and choose between alternative solutions. Students shoulddemonstrate thoughtful planning for a piece of technology or technique.Students should be introduced to the roles of models and simulations in theseprocesses.

4 Evaluate the solution and its consequences. Students should test any solutionagainst the needs and criteria it was designed to meet. At this stage, newcriteria not originally considered may be reviewed.

    Procedures:

    1. Introduce subject by assigning reading.

    2. Expand on reading by doing presentation.

    3. Students will answer questions relating to presentation.

    4. Students will practice meeting requirements of Lab Rubric by completing thequalitative water activities.

    5. Students will present their results in a Round Table discussion, as well as in writtenformat.

Student Assessment: Students will be assessed on several items within this plan. Each student will be evaluated:

    1. On their involvement within the group by peers andinstructor.
