History lesson (Unit 10A)OK, class. Listen. Today’s history lesson is on the early 21st century. This was a fascinating period in history. But what was life really like at the beginning of the 21st century?
Any ideas? No?
Well, it wasn’t like life today. To start with, there were 12 months in a year, 30 or sometimes 31 days in a month, 7 days in a week, 24 hours in a day, 60 minutes in an hour. Sixty seconds in a minute. Don’t laugh. This was before decimal time.
For the people of the early 21st century, sandwiches were a very important food. There wasn’t time for eating. In the 21st century, people were always at work or on the internet, or at the gym. Mobile or cell phones were very important to people.
And money was very special. What? How do you spell money? M-O-N-E-Y.
People were interested in today. They weren’t interested in tomorrow – in the future – in our present.
Two sides (Unit 10B)A: The holiday? It was fantastic.B: It was terrible.
A: No, I wasn’t. I was with Amanda.B: No. I was with Robert.
A: Yes. It was in the centre. It was very modern. B: The building was modern. All the buildings were
modern. It was boring.
A: Yes, it was. It was sunny every day.B: No, it wasn’t. It was terrible. It was cold every day.
A: They were fantastic. They were very friendly.B: No. They weren’t friendly.
A: No, it wasn’t. It was cheap.B: Yes, it was.
A: Yes. It was delicious. B: It was awful.
A: No there weren’t, it was a great trip. Amanda was wonderful.
B: Only one. Robert!

Video diary (Unit 11B)Hi. Hello. Testing 1-2-3. It’s January the 1st 2010. It’s a very important date because today I start my first video diary. Samuel Pepys started his famous diary 350 years ago today on New Year’s Day 1660. And I ... I don’t know what to say.
Hello 2010 p – goodbye 2009. So what did I do in 2009? Well, it wasn’t a great year. I didn’t get married or go to the Moon. My sister, Emily, went to Australia. She married an Australian. And Barcelona Football Club won the UEFA Champions League. And ... this is difficult.
Hi again. It’s January the eighth. Yesterday I went with some friends to the cinema. The film was terrible. No. OK. It wasn’t terrible. The story was terrible. But the special effects were fantastic. I didn’t like it. Or did I like it? I did like it and I didn’t like it. And ... some important news ... I got a job at the bookshop.
Hello. It’s March the fifteenth. I know. I know. I started my video diary and then I stopped. Well, here I am again. I started my new job at the bookshop in February and it’s good. And last week I met a girl. Her name is Sally. I think 2010 is my year.

Our holidays (Unit 13A)A: It’s day one and we’re standing on the edge of the
Grand Canyon. Look at that. Isn’t it amazing? B: It’s beautiful. Wow.A: All that space ...
A: It’s day two and we’re driving through Las Vegas. This is a dream come true. Look at all those lights.
B: Incredible.
A: It’s day three and we’re waiting outside a shop in Los Angeles. There’s a very famous film star in the shop. See if you recognise her.
B: Here she is. A: She’s walking out now. Wow. I can’t wait to show this to
Jill and Jonathan at work.
A: It’s day four and we’re arriving in New York. It’s the middle of the night but it looks amazing from up here. We’re flying over Manhattan now. Look at that. Wow.
B: Honey?A: What?B: There’s a thing on the camcorder. Don’t you ... you

Are you having a good time? You are? Of course I’m happy you’re having a good time. What? What is that music? You’re listening to what? You don’t like opera. What do you mean you like opera now? Portrait (Unit 14A)Don’t move. That’s perfect. Stay like that. Wait. Move your head – not your body – just your head. Move your head a little to the left. That’s it. Good. Don’t look at me. Look here where my hand is.
Good.
OK. Let’s start.
Is this your first time?
You have a great face for painting. Really. Do you like painting?
Who are your favourite artists?
I love colour. Red, blue, yellow, purple, orange.
My favourite colour’s black. Do you like black?
Why?
I agree.
What’s your favourite colour?
Don’t look at me. Remember? Look here.
Can you look ... happy? Think of something nice.
What are you thinking of? No. Wait. Don’t tell me. It’s a secret. I want people to look at this painting and ask - what is this person thinking? You know? Like the Mona Lisa. She’s looking at you in that strange way. She’s smiling inside. Can you do that? Smile inside?
No, I don’t think so. Stop thinking. Empty your mind. Think of nothing.
That’s good. Stay like that.
Perfect. OK. Do you want to see?
Maybe not. Come back tomorrow and we’ll finish. OK?
The stone (Unit 14B)Do you ever get bored by the sound of your own voice? I do. That’s why I want to tell you about this new gadget from Avocado – the green tech company.
The Stone from Avocado looks like a real stone but it’s not. It’s more. The Stone can do all the things your mp3 player can do but it can also change the sound of your voice. Interested? Check it out.
Hold the Stone in your hand and start talking. It’s really amazing. Listen.
You can change your voice in hundreds of ways. You can have a high voice like this or a low voice like this. You can add special effects to your voice and talk like an alien from another planet. ‘Take me to your leader’.
You can change the sex of your voice and talk like a woman if you’re a man or like a man if you’re a woman. If you prefer you can talk like a baby.
The Avocado Stone provides hours of fun. You can phone your friends and surprise them with a new voice. You can use it to rap. Or you can have interesting conversations on your own.
Hi. How are you?
I’m great, thanks. And you?
See what I mean. Try it and you’ll buy it. The Stone from Avocado – the green tech company.

Going local (Unit 15A)A: It’s Tuesday the 26th of January. The time is three
minutes past five and you’re listening to Home Time with me, Jeff Jones, on Romney Radio, your local radio station for the Romney Marsh and Appledore area broadcasting on 93.6 FM and online at www.romneyradio.com. And if you’re watching us on the webcam, you can see that I have a visitor with me today. Hello Sue.
B: Hi Jeff.A: Sue – you’re going to talk to us about money. Is that
right?B: Yes. We all know the euro, the dollar, the pound. But do
you know the Brixton Pound, the BerkShare, the Ithaca Hours, or the Plenty?
A: No, I don’t. Tell us more.B: Well, they are all examples of local currencies. And later
in the programme I’m going to talk to John Howlett, a local businessman, who wants to start a local currency in the Romney Marsh area.
A: What are the advantages of a local currency?B: The idea is to spend money locally and to support local
businesses. A: I see. So are local currencies going to take the place of
other currencies like the euro or the dollar?B: No, I don’t think so but that’s one of the questions I’m
going to ask Mr Howlett at five thirty.A: Very good. Thanks, Sue. Before that we’re going to
bring you the traffic report, and some local news, and some music to help you relax after a hard day’s work.
Talking English (Unit 15B)Today I’m going to talk to you about some of the differences between American English and British English.
American English is similar to British English in many ways but very different in many ways. For example, some words are spelled differently. In British English the word colour is spelled C-O-L-O-U-R. In American English it’s spelled C-O-L-O-R.
We also often use different words to describe the same thing. In Britain people use a lift. In the US people use an elevator. In Britain people put petrol in their cars. American people put gas in their cars.
Some prepositions are different also. In Britain people do things at the weekend. In the US people do things on the weekend.
Our accents are also very different. I’m speaking with an American accent. Now I’m speaking with a British accent.
We often pronounce words differently too. In the US this is called a tomato. In Britain this is called a tomato. Tomato, tomato. What do you call it?
