Work in pairs. Discuss the following questions, and then

share your answers with the whole class .1. Describe your favorite teacher to your partner and tell hi

m/her the reason why you love the teacher.Perhaps the most unforgettable person I have ever met is Prof. Smith who taught us philosophy at university. Although I last met him eight years ago, I still remember his special qualities.

First of all, I was impressed by his devotional teaching. His lectures were so well-prepared and clearly delivered that students swarmed into his classroom. He was intellectually stimulating and believed in what he

Page 3: Unit1-main

taught. Furthermore, he could be counted on to explain his ideas in an imaginative way, introducing such aids to understanding as paintings, recordings, pieces of sculpture and guest lecturers. Once he even sang a song in class to illustrate a point. Second, I admired the fact that he would meet with students outside of the classroom or talk to them on the telephone. Sometimes he would challenge a student to a game of chess. At other times, he would join groups to discuss subjects ranging from astronomy to pop music. Finally, I was attracted by his lively wit. He believed that no class hour is a success unless the students and the

Page 4: Unit1-main

professor share several happy moments and at least one loud laugh. Through his sense of humor, he made learning more enjoyable and more lasting. If it is true that life makes a wise man smile and a foolish man cry, then Prof. Smith is truly a wise man. Teaching is a challenging career in that one doesn’t just provide academic support to students; a teacher also provides personal guidance. Being a teaching professional entails a great deal of responsibility, which must be exercised with extreme care and dedication.

2. What do you think is the meaning of the following quotation ( 引语 )?

The object ( 目标 ) of education is to prepare the young to educate themselves throughout their lives.

— Robert M. Hutchins This quote points out the purpose of education. There is a similar saying in China, which is advocated by Laozi. The saying goes like this: Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime. ( 授人以鱼不如授人以渔。 ) The purpose of education is to teach a man how to utilize the environment, the resources and other useful things

Page 6: Unit1-main

around him to achieve his goals. Education gives a man the way of learning. Knowing how to learn means you have the ability to survive in any circumstance.

Page 7: Unit1-main

3. Why should we emphasize ( 重视 )creativity ( 创造力 ) in every level of education? Creativity is recognized as a practical skill, one which can be taught and which everyone can achieve. It is a way of thinking in which we look at familiar things with a fresh eye, examine a problem with an open mind, and use our imagination rather than our knowledge to explore new possibilities. Creativity improves self-esteem, motivation and achievement of learners. Students who are encouraged to think creatively:

Page 8: Unit1-main

● are more open to new ideas and challenges;● are more able to solve problems;● can work well with others;● become more effective learners;● have greater ownership over their learning.

5. Which of the following is true?

Page 22: Unit1-main

It is no secret the cost of getting further education has grown a great deal recently, so it is not surprising that several students question if further education is vital. In reply, I usually question them whether they can afford to go to college or not. This is because in their lives college graduates generally earn twice as much as those with only a secondary school education. And with a higher education, they can have more opportunities. In fact, a lot more men and women worldwide are getting a higher education, so to stand out in the marketplace you should have a very further education beyond secondary school.

Page 23: Unit1-main

It’s true that several successful people do not have a higher education. However, this is becoming far more rare. It is much more difficult to get a higher powered and highly paid job without a university education than it ever was.

Page 30: Unit1-main

Recently a study was done by researchers from several universities from China and the US. It was to find the answer to the question: why are Chinese middle school students so much better prepared academically than American students? The researchers tracked middle school students in Beijing and Chicago. They compared the teenagers’ sense of responsibility toward their parents with their school performance. It turned out that the more a child felt responsible to his/her family, the more he/she valued school. They found that most children from China maintained or increased their sense of responsibility to their parents during the middle school years, while US children’s sense of responsibility decreased.

Page 31: Unit1-main

The fact is that once children in the West become teenagers, their parents do not ask about their school work as much as before. To Americans, that is simply allowing children to become more independent. But perhaps Western teenagers are given too much freedom. Children might think that their parents don’t care much about them and they shouldn’t feel a strong obligation to their parents. Maybe it’s time for US parents to look to China for some guidance.

B: That’s right. In fact, many educators and policy makers view it as the wave of the future.
