    Unit Three

There are different types of ways for studying the psychology of people !ne of these

ways is the la"oratory e#periments$ where cause and effect are easily separated This may also "e

faulty "ecause there are so many factors in the outside world that ha%e an effect on the way we

thin& and choose things This is why research along with studies is so important Com"ining the

information gi%es us a "etter %iew point of what is actually happening There needs to "e internal

and e#ternal %alidity 'nternal meaning that the study is correct within the la"oratory E#ternal

%alidity meaning$ that there is more that can "e e#panded upon in this su"(ect area of study

)tudies need to "e as close to the *real world+ as possi"le 'nternal %alidity is usually %alued o%er

e#ternal ,ield research shows the importance of other factors on a study Ecological %alidity is

used to tell that the study is %ery close to e%eryday life

-esearchers can use fi%e ways to collect data These are$ to sample daily "eha%ior$

sample daily physiology$ sampling online "eha%ior$ collect smartphone data$ and sampling daily

e#periences )tudying the daily e#periences is ta&ing people.s account of what is happening in

the moment uestions for this include where you are$ how you feel$ what you are doing

Technology has made the process of collecting this data more efficiently and %alid ata

"ecomes more generali2a"le with technology.s preciseness The electronic acti%ated recorder

helps o"ser%e the daily "eha%ior of people Time lapsed photography has the same idea$ (ust in a

different form of media -esearchers li&e to see how the insides of our "odies handle outside

factors Many ha%e tried to study what ma&es the human heart go faster octors will test for

high "lood pressure$ and may only find those results "ecause of white coat hypertension )weat

responses$ "ody temperature$ and "lood pressure are all mar&ers of a physiological change

)cientists use the technology to loo& to the future as well

)tudies of the human mind are more than (ust what you see$ it.s what you o"ser%e Tests

can come in 3uestionnaires to grasp concepts The place"o effect is when a person &nows what

the results are supposed to show and "egins to show those results 4ongitudinal studies show

o%er time the same people under the same hypothesis This may include a wee& trial with ten

people )ur%eys simply as& 3uestions on ideas or morals Each research method has pros and

cons$ you (ust need to consider which on to use and why when studying on your own

ata is e%erywhere in the world today !ur responsi"ility as humans is to decide which is

rele%ant to each of us hen loo&ing at a sur%ey$ loo& for consistency 6enerali2ations can lead

to false information 7lthough fi%e infants out of the ten tested died$ we do not necessarily &now

if half of the "a"ies will die from home "irth e do not &now the other circumstances around

those "a"ies$ or if they all had something else in common e need to "e careful in our thin&ing

of whether statistics are right or wrong Conclusions of data may (ust "e random and ha%e no

    meaning e need to understand that 8C 59:;
