Abstract

my aim was To investigate if leg length leads to an increased hit to miss ratio with kicks in performance level martial arts competitive fighters we tested 5 peoples leg length and analysed their fighting styles based on their leg length and found that martial artist with longer legs had more points with their kicks and used their kicks more then fighters of a smaller leg length

Introduction

The aim of my objective is to investigate to see if leg length lead to an increased hit to miss ratio in performance level martial arts competitive fightersI choose this aim because it is in a sport I feel very highly for and there is very little scientific data around martial arts, most of it is just widely accepted theory's and so I plan to try and change that.The project time scale would be 2 weeks as this gives me more than enough time to do my test and so get as much data as possible

Project Hypothesis

My hypotheses are as follow Martial artist with longer legs will kick more and score more points with kicks Martial artists with longer legs will get more headshots with kicks then those with shorter legs martial artist with longer legs will have more reach with the legs when compared to those of shorter legs

MethodThe method for my tests are as followFirst we took the leg length of all the people in the test measured from the foot to the hip bone We then had them fight each other in a sparing environment(2:30 minute rounds, points only on a 4 meter by 4 meter matt with 3 referees) and told them to fight normally we filmed each fighter 3 times fighting 3 different people and broke down there attacks into kicks, punches and then those down into kicks scored, missed, contact and illegal hit once we had done this for all the fighters we put those into a spearman table we did this because my experiment was based on ratio and where scatter graphs only give a visual relationship a spearman table gives a true relationship, we had the fighters fight 3 different people in order to stop them from fighting someone the were comfortable fighting and it gave me lots of useful data as they would be fighting people with different fighting style

Data CollectionMy data collection is experimental and is made up of field based test’s as there is very little data on the internet related to my aim, I need to look at the leg length and kick to hit ratio of performance level competitive martial artists this data will be classified as ratio data, the information that I will gather will be quantitative data, my tests are bespoke this is because there are no tests related to kick to hit ratio specifically to martial arts and so I need to create some accurate tests that will give me continuous data, so with this in mind I will need to make sure I have a detailed method to ensure reliability and validity. The population for my test are easy to access as I train with them and know them on a personal level they are categorised as performance level competitive martial artists this means that they will come under the category of nominal data , since my results will be collected by me they will be primary data, in my data collection phase I will conduct my bespoke tests and collect my data it will last for 2 week as everyone in my population cannot do the same days with this in mind I have giving myself a long period to collect my data so that I can get as many people tested as possible this will help to improve the reliability and validity of my test.

Data Analysis

My data shall be shown in a spearman table as this shows a true correlation of 2 factors, unlike a scatter graph that shows only a visual correlation this graph shows a true correlation this also means that the data is in a very easy form to see and will count as ratio data

Results

My results show me that martial artist with longer legs have a higher hit ratio with kicks than the fighters with shorter legs they had a score of 0.714285714 which means that there is a strong correlation between leg length and hit ratio see figure 1They also show me that martial artist with shorter legs also score more of their points with punches instead of kicks this had a score of 0.885714286 which is a very strong correlation see figure 2The last result that I found was that there was only a moderate correlation between headshots scored with kicks and leg length so even though some people had longer legs they didn’t score more then those with shorter legs see figure 3

Discussion

from my results I found that leg length has a massive effect on how you fight in martial arts I was surprised that leg length did not have a s massive of a effect on headshots as it did but the others where as expected in my opinion

Conclusion

My aim was To investigate if leg length leads to an increased hit to miss ratio with kicks in performance level martial arts competitive fighters and I completed it to the best of my ability I have found that leg length does have a affect on hit ratio and I am able to back that claim up with the data I have found out

My project conclusion meet my aim well as I was able to justify my reasons for saying that the aim was meet by looking at the tables in the results section, due to figures 1 2 and 3 I can back up this claim and so I feel that this proves that leg length does have a effect on martial arts

The strengths of my project was that it was relatively simple I didn’t need to have a huge amount of data and equipment to do these test this meant I had more time to test people and work out the data this mean that I could spend those 2 weeks training

The areas for improvement are as follow I had to change up some ideas for my tests because I didn’t have the right equipment for it this meant that I needed to change my tests now this wasn’t to bad but more of a annoynce

I would make sure I have a large group to test because even though I gave myself 2 weeks to test I was still short on people I only had about 6 do the test so that’s what I would change as it would give me more reliable information

The benefits of this would mean that I would have a large amount of data to analyse which would hide any anomalies and make my work more reliable this can make my work more respected if ever used again to back up a claim similar to this one

I would say make sure you have good equipment if you plan to do this test again as if you wish to add tests like I wanted to you would be able to do that as your equipment would allow that

I would make sure that you have a large group of helpers as you will need refs people to film and people to analyse the videos so to avoid someone being over worked id make sure you have a large group to do that
