Setting the Context

• Electricity is the main form of modern energy that can be used in different applications.

• 1.2 billion people are without access to electricity globally: 18.5% of the earth

population. Most of these live in rural areas. • More than 2.7 billion people rely on the traditional use of biomass for cooking.

• Many countries in the Arab region are not able to provide adequate energy services for

a significant portion of their population.

• 12% of Arab population or 54 million people (excluding South Sudan) have no access to the electrical grid, and about 48 million people are relying on biomass for cooking.

• Lack of energy services aggravates the cycle of extreme poverty in the rural areas, and some peri-urban locations, resulting in poor social and economic conditions.

• Women and children suffer the most from the limited access to energy services; health, safety, and environmental problems usually associated with the use of inefficient solid fuels in households.

Project Context

Current Situation

- 43% of Arab Population live in rural areas - Growing population - Increasing aridity Growing water scarcity - Insufficient & unequal national support

- Migration - Poverty - Socio-economic marginalization

- Shortage in modern energy supply - Unsustainable energy resources: biomass and low grade fossil fuels

Green Technology Application

Enhance infrastructure Provide added value services Create employment opportunities Minimize financial and technical burden of energy production Preserve the environment

Improve Socio-Economic Situation

Overcoming Barriers
