United Society of Pastel Artists THE PASTEL PALETTE March, 2009 Spring is finally in the air, the flowers are blooming, green surrounds us – it!s the perfect time to get outdoors and paint luminous, brilliant pastel landscapes. I hope you all try to take some time to truly enjoy the lovely weather we are having here in Southern California. Jeff Horn was our demonstrator for March. He has an impressive resume and I recommend you go to his website and see his work. He was an art professor for many years at IVC and recently retired. He has won many painting awards and has juried a number of plein air art shows. At our meeting, Jeff did a portrait of our volunteer member “Wes Schaffner” using charcoal and nu-pastels. Jeff learned about pastels in a workshop with Daniel Greene, who he referred to frequently, sharing tips from Mr. Greene. He cautioned us to not be afraid of pushing it further than you think it should go”, saying, “It!s just a drawing.” Quoting Daniel Greene, he said, “Work it all over”. He spoke to us as he was also speaking to himself. “Hit the big notes” he said. He obviously plays golf, as he brought up Lee Trevino and quoted, “ Learn to miss it quick.” He was full of insightful quotes.

Spring is finally in the air, the flowers are blooming, greensurrounds us – it!s the perfect time to get outdoors and paintluminous, brilliant pastel landscapes. I hope you all try to take sometime to truly enjoy the lovely weather we are having here in SouthernCalifornia.

Jeff Horn was our demonstrator for March. He has an impressive resume and I recommend you go to hiswebsite and see his work. He was an art professor for manyyears at IVC and recently retired. He has won many paintingawards and has juried a number of plein air art shows.

At our meeting, Jeff did a portrait of our volunteer member“Wes Schaffner” using charcoal and nu-pastels. Jeff learned aboutpastels in a workshop with Daniel Greene, who he referred tofrequently, sharing tips from Mr. Greene. He cautioned us to not beafraid of pushing it further than you think it should go”, saying, “It!sjust a drawing.” Quoting Daniel Greene, he said, “Work it all over”.He spoke to us as he was also speaking to himself. “Hit the big notes”he said. He obviously plays golf, as he brought up Lee Trevino andquoted, “ Learn to miss it quick.” He was full of insightful quotes.

“Don!t smoosh, Daniel Greene didn!t like smooshing.” Kamilliacorrected him telling him we call it “blending”.

Jeff continued to work as he talked, sculpting an accuratelikeness of Wes in charcoal. He then came in with dark pastels, laying in lighter values over the top as he worked different facialplanes. He said,” you will often see a color you don!t have, but youjust solve it with what you do have. When asked about leaving papershowing through his vigorous pastels strokes, Jeff replied that helikes honesty in his work. All I can say is, you should have beenthere!

USPA MEETING APRIL 9, 2009

Please remember to hold the date of April 9, 2009 for our nextmeeting. We will have Steve Kell demonstrating in oil. Meeting is atEl Toro Library, Lake Forest, beginning 6:30 p.m.

From Steve!s website:

Steve Kell sold his first oil painting at age 18, (following in hisMother!s footsteps), but his creative bent and runaway sense ofhumor quickly steered him toward cartooning and humorous greetingcard writing. Cut to forty years later (after moonlighting with a fullcareer as a pilot, receiving the Distinguished Flying Cross while in theAir Force flying DC-3!s in Viet Nam, and later flying for theCommercial airlines PSA and USAir, logging well over 20,000 hours).

Now a widely recognized magazine cartoonist, Steve has soldto a hundred different magazines, including Cosmopolitan, SaturdayEvening Post and Good Housekeeping. His Universal Presssyndicated comic strip, “The Captain and Mandy,” appeared in over

70 newspapers nationwide.

In the last few years Steve has returned to the easel, (jumpingat an early retirement package,) endured the many workshops, braved the elements, the howling breezes, packs of wild Chihuahuas, and a rather nasty tick that decided to have its way with him. Hispassion for painting the landscape, lugging the gear, searching forthat perfect composition, now takes up most of his time. His goal is tolay something onto the canvas that embodies the spirit of the scene,as well as its beauty.

Although now represented by several galleries in the area, hestill likes participating in the juried outdoor shows offered by the manyart organizations to which he belongs. For up-to-date information onthe show locations and workshops visit the website,www.Stevekell.com.
