Brazil Usurps United States as Largest Corn Exporter
United States Department of Agriculture
Foreign Agricultural Service
Circular Series FG 02-13 February 2013
Brazil is poised to knock the United States out of its historical position as the world’s largest corn exporter due to a confluence of developments: successive bumper harvests, reduced domestic use, available export capacity, and high U.S. corn prices fueled by the historic 2012 drought. Brazilian farmers responded to elevated corn prices by expanding planted area in 2011/12, which resulted in a record crop last season. The current crop is also expected to be a bumper harvest. Meanwhile, there is reportedly less corn demand from the domestic poultry sector, further augmenting exportable supplies. Exports have also benefited insofar as soybeans were exported early last year, freeing up the transportation infrastructure for corn. Over the past 4 months, Brazil has exported nearly 14 million tons, more than double U.S. shipments over the same period. The United States has slowly lost its global export market share, from a high of 84 percent in 1979/80 to a projected 25 percent for 2012/13– the smallest share in the USDA database (1960/61). Despite sluggish export sales and shipments, U.S. prices are still uncompetitive. Huge plantings expected in 2013/14 combined with normal weather should enable the United States to be more competitive next year.

WHEAT: WORLD MARKETS AND TRADE OVERVIEW Global wheat production for 2012/13 is cut slightly as a result of smaller crops in Brazil and Kazakhstan. Global trade is down slightly. Indian exports are raised again this month to a new record as shipments and sales remain strong. U.S. exports are cut this month on expectations of slower shipments at the end of the trade year. The season-average U.S. farm price is unchanged. PRICES:
Domestic: Wheat prices for all classes were up in January. Poor weather conditions persist in Hard Red Winter (HRW) growing areas. HRW and Soft Red Winter (SRW) prices rose $4 to $344/ton and $3 to $312/ton, respectively. Hard Red Spring (HRS) climbed $18 to $364/ton. Soft White Winter (SWW) jumped $16 to $334/ton, as supplies tighten.

RICE: WORLD MARKETS AND TRADE
OVERVIEW Global rice production for 2012/13 is a record and up marginally from last year, but rising consumption is expected to cause stocks to fall more than 3 percent. Despite that decline, they are projected to be the second highest in a decade. Trade is forecast down from the 2012 record on lower demand, especially from West Africa and Indonesia. FEATURE
Among the top three rice exporters, Vietnam has shown the most price flexibility. When Thailand was the main supplier in 2011, quotes for Vietnam’s 5% stayed slightly below Thai 100B. However, when India’s government lifted its export ban on non-basmati rice later that year, Vietnam’s quotes rapidly declined to match India’s levels. Over the past three months, as demand from traditional buyers of Vietnam slowed, traders have sought to stay competitive by dropping quotes to more than $40 below similar quality rice from India. In January, the Vietnam’s quotes dipped below $400/ton for the first time since 2010.

SELECTED TRADE CHANGES
• Indonesia’s 2012 imports are up 260,000 tons to 2.0 million on near-final data but slashed 650,000 tons to 800,000 for 2013.
• China’s 2013 imports are raised 200,000 tons to 2.2 million while exports are dropped 200,000 tons to 300,000 as high domestic prices attract imports but make exports challenging.
• Iraq’s imports are boosted 120,000 tons to 1.5 million in 2012 on near-final data and raised 100,000 tons to 1.5 million in 2013 on the expectation of a strong continued pace of shipments.
• Bangladesh’s 2012 imports plunged 210,000 tons to a mere 30,000 on near-final data.
• Egypt’s 2012 imports are cut 200,000 tons to 350,000 on account of much lower than anticipated purchases from India.
• Cuba’s 2012 imports are finalized down 120,000 tons to 330,000.

Corn Daily Export Bids
Argentina Up River Brazil Paranagua U.S. Gulf
COARSE GRAINS: WORLD MARKETS AND TRADE OVERVIEW Global corn production is raised this month. Global corn trade is up as higher demand from the EU and China largely offsets reduced demand elsewhere. Trade changes result in Brazil ousting the United States from its position as the top corn exporter for the first time in USDA’s database. The season-average farm price is reduced but remains a record. PRICES
Export quotes have risen slightly since the release of USDA’s January WASDE report but have retreated in recent days. Slow sales and shipments of U.S. corn continue to pressure prices. The premium to Argentine prices has widened as that country’s new-crop harvest nears. TRADE CHANGES IN 2012/13 Selected Exporters
• U.S. corn is cut by 2.0 million tons to 24.0 million, the lowest in over 40 years, on slow
sales and shipments and strong competition.
• Brazilian corn is up 2.0 million tons to a record 24.5 million, nearly double last year’s exports, on larger-than-expected old-crop shipments and on a higher production forecast for 2012/13.

15
• Ukrainian corn is boosted 500,000 tons to 13.0 million as a result of larger production
and strong early-season shipments.
• Canadian barley is up 200,000 tons to 1.5 million on larger feed barley exports.
• EU barley is raised by 200,000 tons to 3.7 million based on the pace of licenses.
• U.S. sorghum is raised 300,000 tons to 1.7 million on the pace of sales and shipments to Mexico. (Mexican imports are raised by the same amount to 1.8 million tons).
• Argentine sorghum is boosted 200,000 tons to 3.2 million on strong old-crop shipments.
Selected Importers
• Chinese corn is up 500,000 tons to 2.5 million based on the pace of shipments, largely from the United States.
• Egyptian corn is cut 1.0 million tons to 4.5 million because of a sluggish pace and reports of difficulties in the livestock sector.
• EU corn is up 2.0 million tons to 10.0 million based on the strong pace of licenses and larger imports from Ukraine and Brazil.
• Mexican corn is lowered 500,000 tons to 8.5 million on prospects for a larger crop and sluggish sales and shipments from the United States.
• Syrian corn is halved to 700,000 tons because of very slow imports.
• Moroccan barley is trimmed by 200,000 tons to 500,000 on improved pasture
conditions.
• Saudi barley is raised 500,000 tons to 7.5 million on strong early-season imports.
• Turkish barley is boosted 200,000 tons to 250,000 because of recent purchases.

OTHER NOTES Local Marketing Years (LMY): LMY refers to the 12-month period at the onset of the main harvest, when the crop is marketed (i.e., consumed, traded, or stored). The year first listed begins a country's LMY for that commodity (2011/12 starts in 2011); except for summer grains in certain Southern Hemisphere countries and for rice in selected countries, where the second year begins the LMY (2011/12 starts in 2012). Key exporter LMY’s are:
Wheat Corn Barley Sorghum Argentina (Dec/Nov) Argentina (Mar/Feb) Australia (Nov/Oct) Argentina (Mar/Feb) Australia (Oct/Sep) Brazil (Mar/Feb) Canada (Aug/Jul) Australia (Mar/Feb) Canada (Aug/Jul) China (Oct/Sep) EU-27 (Jul/Jun) United States (Sep/Aug) China (Jul/Jun) South Africa (May/Apr) Russia (Jul/Jun) EU-27 (Jul/Jun) United States (Sep/Aug) Ukraine (Jul/Jun) India (Apr/Mar) United States (Jun/May) Kazakhstan (Jul/Jun) Russia(Jul/Jun) Turkey (Jun/May) Ukraine (Jul/Jun) United States (Jun/May)
For a complete list of local marketing years, please see the FAS website (http://www.fas.usda.gov/psdonline/psdAvailability.aspx). Stocks: Unless otherwise stated, stock data are based on an aggregate of differing local marketing years and should not be construed as representing world stock levels at a fixed point in time. Consumption: World totals for consumption reflect total utilization, including food, seed, industrial, feed, and waste; as well as differences in local marketing year imports and local marketing year exports. Consumption statistics for regions and individual countries, however, reflect food, seed, industrial, feed, and waste only. Trade: All PSD tables are balanced on the different local marketing years. All trade tables contain Trade Year (TY) data which puts all countries on a uniform, 12-month period for analytical comparisons: wheat is July/June; coarse grains, corn, barley, sorghum, oats, and rye are Oct/Sept; and rice is calendar year. EU Consolidation: The trade figures starting from 1999/00 represent EU-27 and exclude all intra-trade. For the years 1960/61 through 1998/99, figures are the EU-15 and also exclude all intra-trade. EU-15 member states' data for grains are no longer maintained in the official USDA database. Data for the individual NMS-10, plus Bulgaria and Romania, exists only prior to 1999/00. Statistics: (1) Wheat trade statistics include wheat, flour, and selected pasta products on a grain equivalent basis. (2) Rice trade statistics include rough, brown, milled, and broken on a milled equivalent basis. (3) Coarse grains statistics include corn, barley, sorghum, oats, rye, millet, and mixed grains but exclude trade in barley malt, millet, and mixed grains.
