The memories of her experiences are as fresh today as the experiences were when they happened over 25 years ago. She started her Basketball career in summer camp at the age of 13, as it was the game that all the boys played. It was very popular and she wanted to do what they were doing and she liked the league shirts, which the girls didn’t have. Some of the counselors, Speedy Glaser and Barry Kleinman, taught her how to play. “What an oddity I was,” Donna commented, “but I loved the game. The opportunity to compete and test myself was great. I loved playing on a Team and the amazing thing was I excelled at the game. I played as many sports as I could in high school – but my love for Basketball overshadowed them all.” Donna attended Queens College, where she played Basketball and was a regional All-American. She majored in psychology with a minor in communications and was focused on a career that would allow her to help save the world. Donna had planned to earn a Masters and then PhD in Social Work. Although she did study social work at the graduate level at Adelphi University, she began a professional career in the Women’s Professional Basketball League (WBL) from 1979-1981. She played for the New York Stars, the New Jersey Gems and the Chicago Hustle. After leaving the WBL Donna began her second career in sports television, and after stints at ABC and SportsChannel, she was recruited to help begin a start-up called PGA Tour Productions. It was where she was working when she first learned of the Maccabiah Games, and once she found out about them she was motivated to play as a member of the USA Women’s Basketball Team. “I wanted to represent my country,” Donna explained. “I wanted to have USA blazoned across my chest and I wanted to go to Israel. I became singularly focused on making the Team.” Her passion to represent her country at the Maccabiah Games was tremendous. Donna got herself quickly back in playing shape and earned a spot on the Team. When she learned of her appointment she was elated, even though it cost her job. When she told her boss about her appointment, he gave her a choice of joining the Team and competing in the Games or keeping her job. “For me there was no choice,” Donna said. “I did not want to look back and have any regrets. I did not want to say, ‘I wish I would have gone.’ I decided I was going. I would get another job, but this opportunity was a once-in-a-lifetime chance.” Not only did Donna have the opportunity to represent her country as a member of Team USA but she and the other members of the USA Women’s Basketball Team took a stand in support of the Israeli Women’s Team who were seeking better treatment and respect for their competitions and they forfeited the gold medal game. Another decision that she does not regret. The experience was still one of the most memorable of her life. “I will always remember the Pre-Camp experience,”

Dear Maccabi USA Family member;

We should be most proud of our successful program at the recent Maccabi Australia International Games chaired by Ricky and Jodi Reff assisted by Harold Friedman and Lou Moyerman. The feedback from our 115-person Team and 50 supporters was fantastic. Jeff Houseman and the Australian Organizing Committee did a great job.

No sooner had we returned when we hit the ground runninggearing up for the European Maccabi Games this July in

Vienna, Austria. The significance of this locale cannot be overstated: The Games will bethe largest gathering of international Jewry in Vienna since the Holocaust. The OpeningCeremony will take place in the plaza in front of City Hall, where 70 years before Jewswere rounded up for deportation to their death. Under the leadership of Jeffrey Bukantz,Team USA will show its solidarity with European Jews, past, present, and future. We willdemonstrate the power of our Jewish identity and we will not be cowered by history. We will help rewrite history with Jewish accomplishments in sports and spiritual might. You don't have to be a Maccabi person to join us!!!!

Then what? In March, I will be joined by our U.S. Chair, Fred Cohen; our Mission Co-Chairs, Toni Wortman and Dhana Cohen; and Jed Margolis, our indefatigable Executive Director, for site inspection and meetings in São Paulo, Brazil, to prepare for the Pan Am Maccabi Games next December. That means viewing the various venues, selecting the hotels, meeting with other delegates, and reviewing organizational, transportation and strategic and security plans.

With so many activities taking place, the need for a younger leadership is growing. The“old guard” is still in place, but not because we do not wish to relinquish our seats. Weneed you to volunteer, to get involved, to participate and to help raise the funds neededto fuel our organization and to bestow the life-changing experiences on others. We are avolunteer organization, which means that we need YOU. And when I say YOU, I meanthose who are willing to help us in all areas of our needs.

Congratulations to Phyllis Magerman who recently received Maccabi USA’s highesthonor, the Robert E. Spivak Leadership Award. An endowment has been established toname the athlete B’nai Mitzvah Ceremony in her honor, in perpetuity.

Our Mission as a leading Jewish organization is to share our pride in Israel and in our Jewish Heritage. Unfortunately, the winds of anti-Semitism have been gathering strengthand have turned to full-blown demonizing and delegitimization of the State of Israel. Those who wish to see her annihilated are growing in numbers, often led by the large voting block in the U.N. The threat is real, both physically from Iran’s nuclear intentionsand from the political and cultural demagoguery taking place in the media, on campusesand internet in all their forms.

To halt and reverse this trend, I joined forces with my colleagues at the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations to fight back. We have begun to workwithin our community of Jews and Christians to educate the public about Israel's problemsand concerns.

This is not the space to educate us all about the issues facing Israel and Jews worldwide. I encourage you to take the time and inform yourselves from reliable sources, which we areadding to our web-site, as Maccabi USA views Israel as the centrality of Jewish Identity andpride. I urge you to get involved as we need as many advocates for Israel as possible.

Sincerely,

Ron CarnerPresident, Maccabi USA

she reminisced. “I remember going to Yad Vashem with my Teammates, the overwhelming emotions of that visit. I remember climbing Masada– we wereathletes so no cable cars for us – and I remember hanging out with the Wrestlersand other athletes at the Kfar Maccabiah. An indelible image is being with my friends,Sherry Levin, Sandi Bloomberg and ToniWortman in the old city of Jerusalem as wereadied for the Closing Ceremony. It was amoment in time we will all remember. It was an indelible moment, one that continues to stay with me.”

Donna’s Jewish Identity had been forged as a young girl sitting at her grandmother’stable. It was reinforced by participating inthe Jewish Community and further strengthened by her Maccabiah experiencewhere the Jewish Community was theworldwide Diaspora. Being around Jewishpeople from all over the world created agreat sense of pride and connectivity thatwas both reinforcing and inspiring.

Donna has stayed involved with MaccabiUSA as a volunteer since her experience atthe 12th World Maccabiah Games. Shehas built her professional career as a Senior Vice President at the PGA Tour andas President of the WNBA. She recentlystepped down from her position at the WNBAand has launched Orender Unlimited, an independent marketing, media and strategycompany. As a sought-after speaker, Donnahas already been hired to speak to high profile companies regarding teamwork, leadership and motivation.

When asked how she will continue to giveback to the organization, Donna replied,“My participation in the Games gave meone of life’s greatest gifts – a new family – a Maccabi family that has been a source ofstrength, friendship and learning my wholelife. No matter where I have gone and willgo, members of this family have been withme. I am now so honored to serve on theExecutive Committee [of Maccabi USA’sBoard of Directors] and am only too happyto talk about my experience and MaccabiUSA and do whatever I can to insure that all qualified athletes have the opportunity to experience the Maccabiah and the Maccabi family. I look forward to the time in the not-too-distant future when my sonscan too have this remarkable and life-changing experience.”

As a friend of Maccabi USA, we know you care deeply that we bringtogether young Jewish athletes from all over the world to compete inIsrael, build lasting friendships, and learn what Israel means to allJews. 13th European Maccabi Games

Vienna, Austria – July 5th -13th, 2011

The 13th edition of the European Maccabi Games will be held in Vienna, Austria – a significantly historical location. Before 1917 Maccabi Clubs existed all over Europe and were designed to provideJews the opportunity to train, as they were increasingly refused membership at other sports clubs. During World War II a large numberof Maccabi Clubs in Germany and Austria were closed and ownershipseized. Many Maccabi Clubs all over Europe suffered the same fate. At these European Maccabi Games, it will be the first time since 1945,that Jewish athletes from dozens of nations will come together as participants of the Games on a territory of former Nazi Germany.

Although the once-blossoming Jewish Community of Vienna was nearlydestroyed, there is now a rather small and proud Jewish Communitythat has risen from the ashes. They have made a remarkable recoveryin the past decades and the Games will symbolize the re-birth of theJewish Community in Vienna, one of the greatest cities in the world.

The Austrian Organizing Committee is extremely efficient and focusedon producing a spectacular set of Games. Over 2000 athletes willparticipate from 40 countries with 10,000 fans cheering them on.The newly-constructed Hakoah Sport Center will be the hub of activityduring the Games.

The European Maccabi Games USA Organizing Committee is chairedby Jeff Bukantz, who has put together a great leadership Team including All-Sports Co-Chairmen, Rachel and Michael Bronstein; Team

USA Manager, Jeffrey Fuchs; and Supporters Program Chair, PamelaYablon. They plan on bringing a USA Team of 200+ athletes and supporters to Vienna.

“These Games are especially significant to me,” said Jeff Bukantz, “I amthe son of a Holocaust survivor who also was an athlete at a MaccabiClub in Hungary before the war. It is with great pride that I am able tolead the USA delegation to Vienna to compete at these Games.”

There is still time to apply to compete in one of over 13 sports thatthe USA will compete in, just visit the Maccabi USA website atwww.maccabiusa.com to fill out an application and be part of theseculturally significant Maccabi Games. There will be an exciting Supporters Program for family and friends who want to cheer on ourTeam and be part of this unique, historical experience. Please visitour website to view the full itinerary and pricing information. As anathlete or a supporter, this will be an exciting opportunity to show thesolidarity of the Jewish People.

Maccabi USA Honors Jordan WeinsteinFOR 25 YEARS OF NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL LEADERSHIP

Maccabi USA is thankful for the support of all those who participated in the Scroll of Honor in Jordan Weinstein’s name.

It was another wonderful Maccabi Sports competition in Sydney. Team USA landed on the 23rd of December and enjoyed theAustralian hospitality that the organizers provided throughout the Games. The USAbrought 10 teams participating in five sports,Basketball, Golf, Soccer, Swimming and Tennis. There were many memorable moments, particularly when Marcus Schlesinger won

his eighth gold medal during the Ocean Swim– his first – and was renamed “MarcusSpitz”. Our Open Women’s and Youth Men’sBasketball Teams won gold medals and allour athletes competed valiantly. We came to Australia to compete with other Jewish athletes from around the world, but we all left with so much more than memories ofcompetition.

Besides the natural beauty that Australia hasto offer, our Team had the opportunity to bondwith each other and create lasting friendships. We experienced the wonderful hospitality ofour hosts with our first Shabbat dinner the dayafter we arrived and had the opportunity to explore the Jewish community of Sydney.

Besides the wonderful job that our Australianorganizers did with the program, our Teamhad a great experience because of our wonderful Management Team. We extend a special and heartfelt thank-you to HaroldFriedman, Lou Moyerman, Beth Margolis,Stephanie Sorkin and all our coaches andathletic trainers for making this a gold medalexperience for all the athletes.

Meet Our Donors: EDY LEVITTEdy first became involved with Maccabi USA when she learnedabout the organization from a friend who was raving about theMaccabiah Games in Israel. Because she was not an athlete, she pushed her husband David (z”l) to get involved in the Tennisprogram. Edy accompanied David to the 4th Pan American Maccabi Games in Mexico in 1979, where he was a member of the Masters Tennis Team. They both became hooked on the Maccabi Experience.

David went on to compete in multiple Maccabiah Games andother International Maccabi Games, accompanied by Edy andsometimes their two daughters, Valerie and Ondrea. Edy wasable to experience firsthand the life-changing experience that the athletes, no matter what their age, were having by competingin the sport of their choice and becoming immersed in their Jewish culture.

When asked why she continues to support Maccabi USA, Edy replied, “They provide meaningful experiences to kids of all ages. The Games provide our athletes the opportunity to notonly compete, but immerse themselves in their Jewish Heritage. I think it is important for everyone that is able to support this organization so that they can continue to provide life-changing experiences that build Jewish Pride.”

I was so honored to havebeen selected to represent the United States as a member of the Youth Men’s Soccer Team at the MaccabiAustralia International Games in Sydney. I will always remember walking down Olympic Boulevard behind theAmerican flag with my Soccer teammates wearing my red, white and blue beanie. I thoroughly enjoyed meeting otherJewish players from around the world. We all came together to play the sports we love in beautiful Sydney,Australia. I have made friends for a lifetime and will always cherish these memories. What a spectacular way to "kickoff" 2011!

One of the best trips I have ever taken in my life. Mycoach and teammates have become good friends and Ican't wait to experience more Maccabi Games with all ofthem. Winning the bronze medal and representing TeamUSA was one of the best experiences I have ever had andI can't wait to participate in future Games.

The most impressive part ofthe Maccabi Games experience is how quickly friendships are formed among teammates. Brought together simply by our shared passions of sport and Judaism, I left with so much more than just a medal. CHARLIE PARIS, Open Men’s Soccer

Dear Maccabi USA Family member;

TAKING A STAND...1985 USA Women’s Basketball Leader Makes a Difference.Donna Orender, formerly Geils, first traveledto Israel as a member of the USA OpenWomen’s Basketball Team in 1985. Thememories of her experiences are as freshtoday as the experiences were when theyhappened over 25 years ago.She started her Basketball career in summer camp at the age of 13, as it wasthe game that all the boys played. It wasvery popular and she wanted to do whatthey were doing and she liked the leagueshirts, which the girls didn’t have. Some of the counselors, Speedy Glaser and BarryKleinman, taught her how to play. “What an oddity I was,” Donna commented, “but I loved the game. The opportunity to compete and test myself was great. I lovedplaying on a Team and the amazing thingwas I excelled at the game. I played asmany sports as I could in high school –but my love for Basketball overshadowedthem all.”Donna attended Queens College, whereshe played Basketball and was a regionalAll-American. She majored in psychologywith a minor in communications and wasfocused on a career that would allow her tohelp save the world. Donna had planned to earn a Masters and then PhD in SocialWork. Although she did study social work at the graduate level at Adelphi University, she began a professional career in theWomen’s Professional Basketball League(WBL) from 1979-1981. She played for theNew York Stars, the New Jersey Gems andthe Chicago Hustle.

After leaving the WBL Donna began her second career in sports television, and afterstints at ABC and SportsChannel, she was

recruited to help begin a start-up calledPGA Tour Productions. It was where shewas working when she first learned of theMaccabiah Games, and once she found outabout them she was motivated to play as amember of the USA Women’s BasketballTeam. “I wanted to represent my country,”Donna explained. “I wanted to have USAblazoned across my chest and I wanted togo to Israel.
