Dear Betsy Chapoose,

Invitation for Opportunity to Comment on Coulton Floyd II Timber & Fuels Management

Project

The Medicine Bow-Routt National Forest, Hahns Peak/Bears Ears Ranger District, has prepared

Notice of Proposed Action (NOPA) for Coulton Floyd II Timber & Fuels Management Project.

The purpose of this project is to establish regeneration, growth and vigor to beetle killed stands

expediting the establishment of the next forest.

There is a need to:

Manage timber stands to create optimum conditions for timber resiliency, growth, and

regeneration.

Provide a continuing supply of quality timber products to existing and new forest markets

and economies.

Reduce the development of large continuous high hazard fuel conditions.

Protect private property and safety of forest users through timber removal.

This will be accomplished by using commercial and non-commercial timber harvest to capture

marketable forest product values before deterioration which will assist in expediting

regeneration, improve forest health and vigor, reduce hazardous fuel loads and improve public

safety. The timber management practices and silvicultural systems will also be used as a tool to

benefit other forest uses and resources as appropriate.

The project is located on the Hahns Peak/Bears Ears Ranger District, Medicine Bow-Routt

National Forest, in Routt County, Colorado. The legal description is T9N R84W Sections 4-9,

16-21, 29-32, T9N R85W Sections 1, 12, 13, 24, 25, 36, T10N R84W Sections 29-31, and T10N

R85W Section 36. It is located approximately 20 miles north of Steamboat, Colorado and may

be accessed by traveling 17.5 miles north from the intersection of County road 129 and Highway

40, turning east onto County road 64, and traveling approximately 4.5 miles.

The NOPA contains more details and maps about the project. The NOPA is available for review

on-line at: http://www.fs.fed.us/nepa/fs-usda-pop.php/?project=42510. Your comments will help

us complete an environmental assessment. The assessment will be used to determine whether to

prepare an environmental impact statement or a finding of no significant impact.

Dear Terry Knight,
