Executive Director’s Message of Thanks

2014 UWBC Campaign Wrap-UpUnited Way of Brazoria County’s 2014 Campaign marks the 55th year of the organization’s continuously growing community investment partnerships with several hundred Brazoria County businesses and organizations.

“We kicked off the campaign in mid August, with a county wide book drive netting 1,509 books that were then distributed to children at Hand in Hand Child Development Center, Boys & Girls Club of Brazoria County, Salvation Army and Communities In Schools,” said Susan Cooman, Director of Resource Development at UWBC. “To date we have conducted workplace campaigns at schools, banks, retail establishments, chemical plants, contracting companies and city and county offices. We value our longstanding relationships with our investors who continue to create opportunities for a better life for all.”

UWBC provides the investment opportunity to all to support 52 programs that help children and youth achieve their potential through education, help individuals and families become financially stable and independent and improve people’s health throughout Brazoria County.

Though the majority of the workplace campaigns run from August through November, these pacesetter companies run in the spring and summer: Team Industrial Services, Wal-Mart Stores, Target Stores, H.E.B. Stores, Macy’s and The Arc of the Gulf Coast.

In August, campaigns began at The Dow Chemical Company, 3M Company, Brazosport Regional Health System, Huntsman Performance Products, Kroger Stores, Texas First Banks and Texas Gulf Bank, N.A.

Campaigns continued in September with Fluor, Phillips 66, Chevron Phillips Chemical Company, Frost National Banks, Brazosport ISD, Sweeny ISD, Columbia Brazoria ISD, Brazosport College, Zachry Industrial, Inc., Bank of America, Brazos National Bank, Center Point Energy, United Parcel Services, AT&T, Federal Express, Kelsey-Seybold Clinic, Texas New Mexico Power Company, City of Pearland, City of Lake Jackson, City of Sweeny, City of Freeport, City of Richwood, City of Clute, jcpenney Stores, Brazos Place and NAMI Gulf Coast.

October was a busy month with BASF Corporation, Ascend Performance Materials, Brazoria County Precincts 1 and 2, First State Banks, INEOS Olefins & Polymers USA, Lyondell Bassell, ActionS, Inc., BACH Rehabilitation Center, Communities In Schools and Southwest SIDS Research Institute.

November campaigns ran with Iso Therapeutics Group, Pearland ISD, Pearland State Bank, Dillard’s Stores, American Rice, Inc., Braskem America, TIC Energy & Chemical, Inc., Wells Fargo, Mundy Companies, Port Freeport, Bay Area Council on Drugs and Alcohol, Boys & Girls Club of Brazoria County, Memorial Child Care, Women’s Center of Brazoria County and Youth & Family Counseling Services.

UWBC was very fortunate as well to have new workplace campaigns conducted with Freeport LNG and Gulf Chemical & Metallurgical.

Every year companies go above and beyond with special events that run alongside workplace campaigns. Employee Campaign Leaders and their committee members are very creative, conducting chili cook offs, dunk tanks, online auctions, raffles, BBQ cook offs, pie-in-the-eye contests, dollars

for doers, penny jar wars, fishing tournaments, hot dog sales, and bake sales. The “FUN raisers” not only help raise more dollars, but are also a great way to bring coworkers together to network, have fun and give back to the community.

“We enjoy having the opportunity to go out and educate employees on the work that is going on in our community to advance the common good and invite them to join us by giving, advocating and volunteering because that’s what it means to LIVE UNITED,” said Cooman.

No group is too small or too large. We welcome the opportunity to partner with any company that is interested. If you would like to be part of the change and invest in our local community, contact Susan Cooman at (979) 849-9402 or by email at [email protected].

Thank you for your continued confidence in United Way of Brazoria County. On behalf of the entire staff, I can tell you that we are motivated and inspired by the opportunities we have to give back to the community

and residents of Brazoria County to generate change and meet relevant needs. Delivering programs and services that exceed your expectations is our top priority.Over the years, we have remained dedicated to mobilizing our people, strengthening our capabilities, and building trusting relationships

with our community partners. We also pride ourselves on creating partnerships and high-quality solutions aligned with community needs. We are excited for the future and the opportunity to work with you in the areas of education, income, health and basic needs in order to have a COLLECTIVE IMPACT in our community. You have my commitment that we will work hard to excel in these areas we deem the building blocks for a high quality life for years to come. Thank you for your donations, advocacy and volunteerism. We cannot do it alone.

#GivingTuesday 2014At United Way, we often call on members of the community to give, adovcate and volunteer. Our staff and board feel that it is vital to practice what we preach on a regular basis.

On December 2, UWBC Board members and staff volunteered at Brazosport Cares Food Pantry in Freeport to help sort and distribute food donations from around Brazoria County. Donations poured in from local businesses in an effort to support the local community during the busy holiday season.

The staff and board toured the facility and got right to work!

This event was a part of a national movement, #GivingTuesday, a day dedicated to serving the community after Thanksgiving, Black Friday and Cyber Monday. The day was a success and demonstrated how we #LIVEUNITED!

We hope to see you out and about with us on #GivingTuesday in 2015 and throughout the year!
