We are extremely pleased to present our Annual Report to the community about the significant work that occurred this past year. As Wyandotte County’s community impact partner, we embrace a systematic approach to the needs in our area so that we can target our community dollars on those programs that have the best chance of generating change. This report is a testament to what we can do when we work together.

As you read through this report you will note that your investment of $2,933,015 helped support programs run by the United Way of Wyandotte County and our 34 partner agencies. In 2013, we finalized our Community Impact Plan as a method for channeling resources into programs that make a meaningful and measurable difference in Wyandotte County. While we will continuously strive to improve our framework for change, the early results contained in this report demonstrate the power that promoting collaboration and focusing on quantifiable results have for a community.

For example, in the Improving Health & Quality of Life impact area, our services acknowledge the needs of clients by providing a holistic approach, including: primary and mental healthcare services, nutrition education, exercise programs, and making available fresh produce from community gardens.

Additionally, this same kind of approach is being used in our Meeting Basic Needs impact area. We not only provide the emergency assistance that helps people get through a crisis, we also support programming, like financial literacy courses and asset building, that help people build stable lives free from dependence on public assistance.

In the area of Nurturing Children & Families, we work to ensure that the needs of children and youth are met from early childhood until they transition to college or a career. Whether this is early childhood education, after-school programming, or support for kids in turbulent households, we do everything we can to make sure that the youth in our community have the same opportunity as any other kids in America.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank donors, sponsors, and labor unions for your significant contributions. We could not do the work we do without your support. We would like to thank our Board members who generously give their time to help us sustain a highly efficient organization. Changing this community requires cross-sector partnerships and our goal is to continue to be a backbone for that type of collaboration.

Keynote Speaker, Kathleen SebeliusKathleen Sebelius is one of America’s foremost experts on national and global health issues, human services, and executive leadership. As CEO of Sebelius Resources LLC, she provides strategic advice to private companies, nonprofit organizations, higher education institutions, and financial investors.

Sebelius currently serves as a member of the Board of Directors of Grand Rounds Inc., Hampton Creek Inc., and Humacyte Inc., and she is a senior advisor to Enhanced Pharma, Out Leadership, and the Aspen Institute, where she co-chairs the Aspen Health Strategy Group. Sebelius is a frequent keynote speaker for national and international organizations.

From April 2009 through June 2014, Sebelius served in President Barack Obama’s Cabinet as the 21st Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services, leading the effort to pass and implement the most significant health reform in half a century, the Affordable Care Act. Forbes named Sebelius one of the 100 most powerful women in the world.

Having served as Governor of Kansas from 2003 to 2009, Sebelius is the only daughter of a governor to be elected governor in American history: her father, John Gilligan, was Governor of Ohio. Time Magazine named her one of America’s Top Five Governors. Previous elected offices include two terms as the Kansas insurance commissioner and four terms in the Kansas Legislature. During her public service career, she led numerous ambitious efforts at the state and federal level to provide all Americans with the opportunity and tools to live happier, healthier, and more successful lives.

Sebelius earned a master of public administration degree from the University of Kansas and a bachelor of arts degree from Trinity Washington University. She is married to Gary Sebelius, a federal magistrate judge. They have two married sons, John and Ned, and a grandson, George.
