Thank you to our
Corporate Partner:
IMCEA Change of Responsibility as Terms End
As your out-going President and soon to be Past President, I want to introduce your
incoming President, Melissa Schaffner, CMCE. She is the Marketing Director at Fort Campbell and has supported me and IMCEA over the past year. She is forward thinking and will help grow IMCEA membership and lead its continuing development for the future. Please join me in welcoming her as she transitions into her new role.
IMCEA is in the process of coordinating the Second Annual Virtual Training and Tradeshow; using the same very successful virtual platform from last year. Look forward to dates, training modules and vendors participating in the Trade show over the next few weeks. IMCEA is here to support you, the MWR Professionals, so please take advantage of future training opportunities, engage our industry partners, continue to network and get involved with your local chapters. Harper Dickson, CMCE President
I can’t believe my tenure as IMCEA
President is nearly finished. It has been an exciting year while I’ve been in office. Our Executive Director retired, which caused us to reallocate our headquarters roles and responsibilities, making us more efficient and effective. We were also able to rejuvenate some previous vendor partner relationships. Sadly we had some losses of previous IMCEA leadership that will be sorely missed. They taught and lead us all through the good times and leaner times within MWR. Without their guidance, we would all be in different places in our lives and MWR wouldn’t be what it is today. Pete and Fred rest in peace; not a day goes by that we don’t think of you and your contributions to our personal and professional lives.

COAST GUARD MWR PLACES GALLAUDET UNIVERSITY
STUDENT FOR SECOND INTERNSHIP By Robert Davis
IMCEA Corporate
Sponsors:
Gold
quickly market Jarashow’s
resume throughout the Service.
Within a week, Davis, working
with Chad Baldwin, MWR
Director at Coast Guard Base
Elizabeth City, North Carolina,
and was able to
place Jarashow as
an intern in the
command’s MWR
program. Baldwin
worked closely with
Jarashow before her
arrival ensuring the
MWR staff could
meet her
communication
needs. Fortunately,
Baldwin had a
second college
intern at Base Elizabeth City
during the same period, Kristin
Heatley from Lock Haven
University of Pennsylvania, with
experience in sign language,
making Jarashow’s internship
that much easier and an
opportunity for Heatley to
improve her sign language
skills! Diversity brings a host of
talent to any organization and
it’s just a matter of recognizing
the resources and talent that
each individual possesses and
providing them with the
opportunity to develop these
talents. The Coast Guard MWR
T he Coast Guard Morale,
Well-Being, and Recreation
(MWR) program recently placed Ms.
Lisa “Liz” Jarashow, a hearing
impaired recreation major from
Gallaudet
University in
Washington, DC,
for her second
Coast Guard MWR
internship at its
Base Elizabeth
City MWR
operation.
Gallaudet
University is world
renowned as a
leader in education
and career
development for
deaf and hard of hearing students.
Jarashow conducted her first MWR
internship at Coast Guard Base
Miami Beach during the summer of
2012. After an exhaustive effort to
find a location to complete her
second internship as part of her
education curriculum, Jarashow
found herself returning to the Coast
Guard MWR and contacted Bob
Davis, MWR Internship Coordinator
at the Coast Guard Community
Services Command.
Davis seized this opportunity to
assist her in paving the way for her
to earn her degree in Recreation
Administration. Through email
communication, Davis was able to
to recruit a New IMCEA
Member

Internship Program has the potential to make very
positive life changes for participants. We are proud
to extend this opportunity to everyone!
In true Coast Guard fashion, Jarashow and Heatley
were embraced by the MWR staff at Base Elizabeth
City as a Shipmate. During their internships under
Baldwin, Jarashow and Heatley got hands on
experience in a broad scope of MWR and
recreational responsibilities including exposure to
athletics facilities, food and beverage operations,
marketing, information, tickets, and tours, and event
planning, just to name a few. Both
adventuresome and creative individuals with a com-
mon goal of pursuing a career in MWR or field relat-
ed to recreation, conducted an ongoing
Ultimate Frisbee Intramural Sports League,
organized multiple trips to sporting events including
the Carolina Hurricanes hockey game, Washington
Nationals versus Los Angeles Dodgers, and
Baltimore Orioles versus New York Yankees
baseball games, and planned for the upcoming
annual Coast Guard day picnic, one of the largest
Coast Guard MWR events at this command.
Since 2002 when the Coast Guard MWR internship
started, Davis has placed 184 interns in Coast Guard
MWR programs throughout the Service. Many of
these students have continued to pursue successful
MWR careers. The Coast Guard
maintains affiliation agreements with over 50
colleges and universities to place MWR interns,
including eight Historically Black Colleges
Universities and three Hispanic Association of
Colleges and Universities. Interested students
should contact Mr. Robert Davis at
[email protected] to learn about current in-
ternship opportunities.

IMCEA Partners with Celebrity as Producer of the 2014-2015 MWR
Technology Toolbox Educational Workshop Series
The International Military Community Executives Association (IMCEA), administrator for the Certified Military Community Executive (CMCE) designation, has partnered with Celebrity Systems Corporation for 2014-2015. In previous years, the workshop series has been produced in conjunction with the Armed Forces Food & Beverage Training Workshops and similar trade events, serving military MWR communities. With increasing budget restraints for travel, and the IMCEA's decision to focus on virtual workshops programming, Celebrity has decided to take the workshops on the road. The tour will travel to different installations, presenting technology workshops for MWR managers and key personnel looking for real-world opportunities to generate increased revenues using the hottest new digital technologies. Workshops will profile case histories of the most successful MWR installations, including Warrior Zones and Liberty Centers, focusing on the latest digital technologies from gaming to LED lighting, apps and social media to touch screen control systems, theater systems to self-contained multi-player gaming stations. "We are delighted to once again partner with Celebrity for these great workshops," said Melissa Wells, IMCEA Chief of Marketing and Communications. "Our past collaborations have been highly successful, and we think this new concept for delivering educational programming directly to installations will go a long way toward keeping MWR professionals updated on all the latest technologies coming to market," she continued. According to Celebrity's Mark Velligan, attendees will also get the opportunity to "touch and feel" a selection of the newest products by way of a Mobile Technology Lab that tandem with the workshops. The demonstrations are made possible by the tour's technology sponsors, including ScreenPlay Entertainment, Bosch Communications Systems, MYE Club TV Systems and EV Electrovoice, with others coming aboard as the tour launches in June. For more information about this tour or to apply, see pages 8 – 9. To confirm that your installation is scheduled, contact Mark Velligan at 949-742-0454 or by email at [email protected], or visit mwrtoolbox.com
