Passions run high. Ecclesiastical based voices are often loudly expressed, and the question sometimes heard asks “Where does Unity stand?” Often the question is asked as if to bait, for if the wrong answer is heard then the result is seeking to make Unity wrong. So, “Where does Unity stand?” Over the years of Unity’s existence as a religious institution this question has been asked more than a few times, and the answer always revolves around the wording that Unity’s perceived place or mission is to offer and teach from its understanding of Spiritual Principle, and then to acknowledge the freedom of each to apply that Principle within his or her life as their individual guidance is perceived. Notwithstanding a possible law or a legal interpretation, where it gets tricky is to then believe that “my” under- standing of Principle is the right one and should be the standard for another’s life and decisions…perhaps even for everyone, everywhere. Then what is occasionally heard is another question something like, “You mean—and citing a specific something—is okay?” The answer always is to state that it is okay for another, and if it isn’t okay for you, then don’t do it, reminiscent of Jesus’ words to Peter as concern was expressed for another, “What difference does that make to you? You follow me.” Meaning, in the context of this article, to follow the inner promptings of Spirit apart from what another is doing or saying. Our understanding of Spiritual Principle isn’t captured within a specific sentence or buried within creed and dogma. It isn’t contained within a published statement that then excludes anyone who might be described as too far left or right of its wording. Within Unity this is specifically true because we further teach that everyone’s understanding of Spiritual Principle is never a static, one-time occurrence, but one that evolves. Each can most probably remember something that was once believed—even ardently—now perceived differently, even being the total opposite. So, we walk gently through the universe as we more deeply realize that ours is never to fix or change another, for that is a daunting task and is always based on the false assumption that we would know what we were doing. Ours is to perceive another as we would want ourselves to be perceived. Ours is to grant another freedom to follow their guidance as they unfold what is right and perfect for them. And, Unity also doesn’t tell you who to vote for.

WHERE DOES UNITY STAND?

VERY RECENTLY the Supreme Court of our land handed down two decisions that were polarizing in how they were received by the majority of people, which is to say they were either applauded or criticized. If critical, some were rather flamboyant with their

word choices, and if the narrow five to four ruling which came down differently for each of the two was favorable, praise was offered. The rulings of course directly affect the portion of our population who want the institution of marriage to be available between two people regardless of gender. Other polarizing topics that seem to always be on the front burner of various levels of government have to do with the issues of abortion, legalizing levels of drugs from marijuana and beyond, gun control concerns and more. Passions run high.

Ecclesiastical based voices are often loudly expressed, and the question sometimes heard asks “Where does Unity stand?” Often the question is asked as if to bait, for if the wrong answer is heard then the result is seeking to make Unity wrong. So, “Where does Unity stand?”

Over the years of Unity’s existence as a religious institution this question has been asked more than a few times, and the answer always revolves around the wording that Unity’s perceived place or mission is to offer and teach from its understanding of Spiritual Principle, and then to acknowledge the freedom of each to apply that Principle within his or her life as their individual guidance is perceived.

Notwithstanding a possible law or a legal interpretation, where it gets tricky is to then believe that “my” under-standing of Principle is the right one and should be the standard for another’s life and decisions…perhaps even for everyone, everywhere.

We desert rats have learned to appreciate August. Thank God it’s 109o above zero rather than below. It’s great, the monsoon rains washed my house. I don’t have to turn on the heater in my house or car. If I get to the grocery store by 7 am, I’m all done with shopping by 8 am.

What can we feel good about in August. It’s not cold. There will be two films this month. IONS on Friday, August 2 at 6:30 pm will show Escape Fire: The Fight to Rescue American Healthcare. It takes on a cure for our health care system. Movies That Matter Tucson will show You Can Heal Your Life with Louise Hay on August 18 at 1:30 pm. Both of these for $5 each.

We have two Course in Miracles meetings: the Blue Book on Tuesdays, and the Urtext on Wednesdays both at 6 pm in Annex Room 1. Also on Wednesdays, The Silent Unity Prayer service meets at 10 am, followed at 10:30 by the book study, Conversations with God, by Neale Donald Walsch. On the first Wednesday, John Dore facilitates Spiritual Constellations at 7 pm in Annex Room 3. This insightful process helps you to understand puzzling family relationships that carry over into the present.

On the third Thursday TIES continues to delve into Near Death Experiences and other spiritual transfor-mations.

Reiki Circle meets at 7 pm on the second Friday in Harmony Hall. Healing energy might also be de-scribed as the divine energy of love. When it passes through you and you accept it as such, you may feel a profound peace and acceptance; the healing.

Friday Happy Hours meet at different restaurants each week to sample delicious appetizers which are usually a meal in themselves and at reduced prices. We are trying out new restaurants as well as old favorites in different parts of town to find out what’s out there. Let me know if you’ve discovered a really good one.

At our potluck on Sunday, August 11 three pro-fessionals from the healing community will explain how their particular treatments work. Janice Thomas

as they mingle and give shape to the subject is a fas-cinating process. To that end, I focus on working with what the medium does naturally — guiding rather than assuming I need to control. As I continue

to learn and improve my skill, I get caught up in the process of resolving the tension between accuracy and the essence as I seek to portray the idea of my subject. When it comes to watercolor, however, I consider myself a novice with much to learn.”

NANCY COLEI have been training and creating art as a lifelong pursuit, culminat-ing in college with a five week long watercolor course taught while backpacking in Greece and Italy through the University of Arizona College of Architecture. My recent

works are concentrating on color, using a brilliant palette that isn’t strictly representational. My long term art goals are to continue to grow and develop my style.

Prosperity and the Light; Your Guide to Living In Abundance, by Diane Stein, offers her substantial experience and insights into bringing prosperity and abundance into your life. Her book is about rejecting blame and trying new methods.

A conscious awareness of God can be the beginning of a whole new life! In Jim Rosemergy’s book, Even Mystics Have Bills to Pay Balancing A Spiritual Life and Earthly Living. The key to prosperity is turning toward God. You are invited to go beyond old methods of making ends meet and to “dig deeper, not for precious metals, but for the treasure that is within us.”

Keeping Close In Prayer with Dorothy Pierson, is a collection of articles that Dorothy wrote over a period of seven years for her Prove Me Now Ministry Newsletter. Most offer insights to the principles that she has lived by most of her life.

A remarkable collection of poetry, fiction, and essays compiled by Anne McCracken and Mary Semel, both of whom have lost a child, A Broken Heart Still Beats gets to the heart of this hardest of trials. Seasoned with wisdom and experience, their words and the works of several famous authors, offer rare comfort and insight to those who need it most.

NEW CHILDREN’S BOOKSBeautiful Girl, by Christiane Northrup, with Kristina Tracy, presents a simple but important message; that to be born a girl is a very special thing and carries with it magical gifts and powers

that must be recognized and nurtured.

Bonnie the Honeybee and The Case of the Butterfly Blues, written and Il-lustrated by Lori K. Lee, helps children understand that everyone has their own unique abilities. This is a story with large lessons for young children.

WHO MANIFESTED THE BASKETBALL?THE LUTE OLSON autographed basketball was donated by Marilyn Brodhurst (thank you Marilyn) to be raffled off for some worthy cause. The worthiest I could think of was cooling down the Ramada for summer by installing a mister system. Tickets were sold at $1 each or 6 for $5. Judy Notestine excitedly bought six and very excitedly filled out each ticket; her daughter also eagerly bought one. The energy around these two as they bought the tickets was palpable. No. they were not jumping up and down but close. Judy won.

Her son-in-law, was a basket ball coach who at-tended to the Final Four (college tournament) each year. Judy and her daughter vibrated such love and energy that, of course, the Universe came through. Does getting what you want require that you get so excited that you jump up and down in anticipation? Probably not, but close.

Biographies of

UNITY OF TUCSON BOARD MEMBERS

Steve RossSINCE 1995, I have been attend-ing Unity of Tucson and joined in 1997. This was where I met my wife Sheila. This church was my first experience with Unity.

While growing up, we only went to church the few times a year when we visited Grandma. While in college started attending church with whomever I was dating. (You get lots of brownie points when you do this.) In doing so, I attended Episcopalian, Baptist and Catholic churches for a few years at a time.

When I moved to Tucson I went church shopping and was really drawn to Unity’s message that we are in charge of our own life experiences. I’ve always felt this and now I found a community that also feels that way. In real life (lower case r), I’m an engineer. Currently I work out of an office in Detroit. This means I commute every other week.

Sheila joined the board of Unity 11 years ago and when her 6 years was up Larry asked me to al-low my name to be placed in nomination. I’ve been the Board Treasurer for the last 4 years. Almost from day one at Unity I began tithing. In the past 15 years my salary has almost tripled. So I say it works.
