History of Logan Square● Named after John A. Logan, a Union

General in the Civil War● Developed by Martin Kimbell● Fully annexed into Chicago in 1889● Original citizens were mostly English,

Scandinavian (Norwegian and Danish), Polish or Jewish

● Illinois Centennial Monument built in 1918

...-1836, New Yorker Martin Kimbell claimed 160 then became town of Jefferson-1850, there was a large farmers market along North West Plank Road, and now called Milwaukee Avenue-1871 Chicago fire, Logan Square grew especially suburban Maplewood which is along Milwaukee Avenue-1889, the “L” arrived and new homes were built -After WWI, Logan Square boomed•Russian, Polish and Jewish immigrants

-1918, Illinois Centennial Monument built commemorate the 100th anniversary of Illinois’ statehood-1930, population fell gradually-1963, residents formed the Logan Square Neighborhood Association, a group has worked to improve housing and community spirit-The oldest portion of Logan Square, the Bucktown neighborhood in the community's southeast corner, has become a haven for artists

Logan Square Today•Logan Square displays a key ethnic and economic diversity

•The population has fallen less rapidly than that of Chicago as a whole

• Influx of Hispanics since 1960s and by 1990, Hispanics made up almost 2/3 of Logan Square's population

•While there are many upper-middle-class professionals who own houses along the boulevards, the majority of Logan Square's residents live in rental flats and apartments
