UNIVERSAL DESIGNEDD-2290-C02 – Civil Design & Drafting – Warren Salberg – 2018-04-04
INTRODUCTION
EQUITABLE USE
Crosswalks downtown
• Audible signals for vision-impaired people
• Visual signals for sighted people
• Drop-curb design for wheelchair access & limited tripping hazard
• Tactile paving allows for prevention of slippage
Bicycle route, London Rd.
• Low traffic density; offers no calming effect
• Not at offset road
• Low-visibility bollards may offer night-time hazard
• Diverts drivers away from destination, creating longer routes
FLEXIBILITY IN USE
Chinook Tourism, Scenic Dr. & Mayor Magrath Dr. S.
• Design offers access to those without mobility challenges.
• The sloped ramp is easy for people in wheel chairs and those with other impairments.
Recycle, garbage bin, Henderson Park
• Angle offers accessibility to wheelchair users but falls short.
• lid is too high to reach
• lid is too heavy
• offers recycling bin for bottle collectors but contains garbage – intended design missed its mark.
SIMPLE & INTUITIVE USE
Active Park, Scenic Dr. S.
• Simple instructions, simple design, simple to use
• Provides high benefit per effort
Traffic circle – 4 St. & 7 Ave. S.
• Low traffic area, unnecessary
• Annoying hindrance of traffic flow
• Waste of civic financial resources
PERCEPTIBLE INFORMATION
Automated washroom downtown
• Without reading one can easily understand the diagram.
• Both French and English instruction.
• Instruction are bulleted.
Chinook Tourism, 28 St. & Scenic Dr. S. intersection
• Left lane turns left; right lane goes straight and turns right
• Perception: no through route, road ends
• No direction arrows on pavement (show yellow)
TOLERANCE FOR ERROR
HONK Park & Pay service
• Elimination of manual Zone input allows for less error in zoning
• Automated GPS location
Automated washroom downtown
• Its location is close to a bar
• Social demographics in the area have led to continued misuse of the washroom
LOW PHYSICAL EFFORT
Emergency callbox at University of Lethbridge
• Very distinct color and text
• To contact security there is a big red button
• Flashing light on the top of pole for reduced response time.
28 Ave. S. at Parkbridge Estates
• Inadequate Drainage, and low slope
• Entire sidewalk freeze over with ice in melting season
• This is in front of an elderly gated community
SIZE AND SPACE FOR APPROACH AND USE
Table at Galt Garden
• Wide wheelchair access allows good turning radius
• Cement pad allows for walking behind seating
• Approachable from all directions
Entrance at Sport Chek
• When door is open, wheel chair access is limited forcing you into the street.
• Walkway is awkwardly sloped downwards from the door to the street
• Bollards reduce sidewalk area for all pedestrians.
