About the University Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (UAM) is a public university
with an outstanding international reputation for its high-quality
teaching and research. Founded in 1968, it has been generally
recognized as one of the best Spanish universities in both
national and international rankings.
UAM has the following Faculties/Schools: Science, Economics
and Business Studies, Law, Art and Philosophy, Medicine,
Psychology, Teachers´ Training and Education, an Engineering
School for Computer Science and several affiliated centres,
offering a wide range of studies in humanities and scientific and
technical fields. Currently it has about 30,000 students, about
2,800 professors and researchers and nearly 1,000
administrative staff.

GENERAL ACADEMIC INFORMATION
Academic Calendar The academic year is divided into two semesters:
First semester (Fall): September – January
Second semester (Spring): February – June
The academic calendar will be announced hereOrientation days are planned to welcome exchange students at

REQUIRED/RECOMMENDED LANGUAGE SKILLS
SPANISH In general, the language of Instruction is Spanish.
Nevertheless, some courses are taught in English (see below)
Required level of Spanish (for those students taking courses in Spanish) *
General rule: B1 required, B2 recommended
Specific rules: B2 required for the following studies:
o Postgraduate studies: Master
o Faculty of Economics and Business Studies
o Faculty of Philosophy and Arts for the following Degrees:
Hispanic Studies Degree
Modern Languages, Culture and Communication Degree.
*In general terms, the limited offer of courses taught in English means that

exchange students must take part of their courses in Spanish and for this, they
must have and prove (as stated above) a certain level of Spanish.
Required Certificate of Spanish
As a general rule, students do not need to send their Spanish level certificate to
UAM. It is the responsibility of the home university to select their students
according to UAM linguistic requirements as mentioned above.
Exceptions where students are required to send their Spanish certificates:
o Students nominated for the Faculty of Medicine
o Students nominated for the Faculty of Law
o Students nominated for the Faculty of Philosophy and Arts for the following
degrees:
Hispanic Studies Degree
Modern Languages, Culture and Communication Degree.
For these two Degrees nominated students will have to prove B2 level in
Spanish with a DELE or SIELE certification.
ENGLISH UAM English Courses
Level of English (For those students taking courses in English):
B2 level of English is recommended (It is not necessary to send any certificate
to UAM. It is the responsibility of the home university to select their
students according to UAM linguistic requirements).

Depending on the Exchange Programme, nominations and required documents should be sent

ENROLMENT TO COURSES
You will be informed by your Faculty/School on the Enrolment to the Courses. Each Faculty/School
has different processes and deadlines.
It is very important that you bear in mind that at least 51% of your courses will have to be enrolled
in the Faculty/School where you have been accepted.
Spanish language courses: The UAM Language Service organizes Spanish language
courses with a reduced fee of 65 euros for students coming from partner universities. Check more
information on the Language Service Website.
