The Maternofetal and Embryo ResearchGroup (MatE) aims to promote an interest,and collaboration in the study of maternofetalmedicine, embryology and reproductivebiology. The MatE group facilitates researchand dissemination of research findings inthese areas to the general public, industry,scientists, clinicians and patients. Sub-areasof study include general obstetrics,urogynaecology, women and perinatal mentalhealth, Assisted Reproductive Technology,stress in preimplantation development

RESEARCHAREA
on-goingRESEARCHResearch conducted by group members of the embryoresearch team mainly focuses the study of various stressors onpre and post-implantation development in AssistedReproductive Technology. Apart from that, several studies arecarried out on the use of natural products to improve malegamete quality and embryonic development. Clinical studiesare pursued in the areas of urogynaecology, effects ofenvironmental tobacco exposure and cervical cancer.

The MatE research group memberscollaborate with several institutions ofhigher learning such as HarvardUniversity, Northeastern University,Bedford Stem Cell Research Foundation,and Massachusetts General Hospital.Industrial partners include Abbott,Eppendorf and Honda Global Amity.Malaysian collaborators include LPPKN,UKM, UM and UIA.

researchIMPACTMatE members are currentlyinvolved in the training of ninePhDs. The group has graduated fourPhDs and four MSc candidates. Thegroup has secured industrial,national and institutional researchgrants totalling RM 1.5 million, withover 40 publications in the last twoyears. The group holds fewindustrial consultancy project.

14 intellectual properties from
MatE members, with several innovation awards.
COMMERCIALIZATIONMatE members are already providing lab-based services forconfocal laser scanning embryo imaging. Next year, mouseembryo assays for IVF clinics and time-lapse imaging formurine embryo studies will be offered as services. In the nextfew years the group is planning to launch research-basednutrional products for pregnancy and post-partum recovery.Also in the pipeline are the production of healthcare Apps forpatients.

MatE members are office bearers of severalprofessional bodies and have contributed to theorganization of several international and nationalconferences with industrial partners over theyears. Members serve as expert panel, evaluatorsof national and international grants, reviewers ofindexed journals and examiners of postgraduatethesis and the medical curriculum.

FORWARD-lookingThe next five years will befocused on expanding ourindustrial and academiacollaborations internationally,as well as applications forcompetitive global grants onmaternofetal health anddevelopmental origins ofhealth and disease (DOHaD).
