2016-17 UAlbany Men’s Basketball Game Notes - @ Colgate 12/10LAST TIME OUT...

Four Great Danes Net 14+ Points Each as UAlbany MBB Takes Down Marist 78-66

ALBANY, N.Y. – The UAlbany men’s basketball team re-turned to the win column with a 78-66 home victory over Marist on Wednesday night.

After leading nearly the entire first half, UAlbany (5-4) kept a double-digit lead in the majority of the second period over Marist (4-6) for the win. The Great Danes netted 42 points in the paint and committed only nine turnovers as a team.

“This was a game that we needed; I thought we came out with energy and enthusiasm early and often,” said UAl-bany head coach Will Brown. “We need some balance, and I thought our guys did a good job of that tonight.”

Joe Cremo had a career night, tying a season-high 24 points and adding seven assists and six rebounds. He did not have a turnover on the night.

“We said we had to get back on track tonight,” said Cre-mo. “We just need to keep trusting each other and having each other’s backs. We keep getting better every day.”

With tonight’s win, UAlbany has improved to 2-0 against MAAC opponents, 3-0 against New York-based teams and 3-1 at home.

Dallas Ennema finished with 16 points, six rebounds and two blocks off the bench. Marqueese Grayson tallied five steals with 14 points, five rebounds and two assists while Mike Rowley notched 14 points and seven rebounds.

For Marist, Ryan Funk was 6-for-11 from three with 18 points and four rebounds with Brian Parker having 15 points, six rebounds and five assists.

Both sides tried to establish their perimeter shooting early, with both sending several shots out from beyond the arc. A three-pointer by Grayson was the only basket in the only five minutes.

Ennema started to lead the UAlbany offense, hitting five points in a row for UAlbany to counter Marist threes. UAlbany switched tactics and went for the paint, making the next three baskets plus a free throw to build a 15-6 advantage with 8:30 remaining in the 1st.

Parker hit Marist’s next three field goals, all layups on drives, to pull the Red Foxes within four. UAlbany rebuilt the lead with two Rowley free throws and a Cremo drive down the lane for a layup to make the lead 22-14 UA.

Again Marist came closer with layups, and again UAlbany rebuilt its advantage with a Rowley turnaround hook shot then an Ennema deep three. The two combined again with a behind-the-back pass from Ennema to Rowley for a layup, then Rowley added another free throw to complete the 8-0 run. A three-pointer by Funk in the final seconds made it 30-21 UAlbany at the half.

UAlbany’s guards found the basket to begin the second half. David Nichols, who missed most of the first with foul trouble, drove to the rim and scored, followed by two layups by Cremo for a 6-0 run. Grayson added a three following a Marist basket to make it 39-23 UAlbany a little more than two minutes elapsed into the second.

UAlbany continued to attack, forcing steals with the pres-sure zone and hustling down the court. The Great Danes got seven straight points, sparked by four from Cremo, to send the lead to 49-30 with 13 minutes left.

At the 10-minute mark, Marist started to find room along the baseline, as layups from three different guards led to the visitors pulling to within 10 at 58-48, leading to UAl-bany calling a timeout with 7:13 left.

The two sides exchanged scoring back and forth, with each going to the hoop, but UAlbany held a strong advan-tage with three layups from Cremo. With 2:17 remaining, UAlbany scored six points in 37 seconds, capped by a steal and thunderous dunk by Grayson, making it 74-58.

A couple of Richie Mitchell threes brought Marist back to within 10 with under a minute to play, but UAlbany sealed the game with late free throws from Nichols. UAlbany took the victory 78-66.

Sanders Scores Career-High 24 Points to Lead UAl-bany MBB to First 2015-16 Win 88-67 Over Colgate

ALBANY, N.Y. - In its highest-scoring regulation non-conference win since 2009, University at Albany men’s basketball (1-2) took down Colgate (1-2) 88-67 at SEFCU Arena on Thursday night for its first win of the season. Senior co-captain Ray Sanders scored a career-high 24 points to go with a career-best five steals against the Raiders.

“Coach Brown told me to let my defense open up my of-fensive game,” said Sanders. “We want to go into every game and try to play inside-out, execute our game plan. I wanted to stay aggressive up front, and just do my best to make my teammates better.”

With shooting woes plaguing the Great Danes the last two games, Sanders and Evan Singletary came out of the gate hot from the field. The senior pair combined to go 4-for-4 from behind the three-point arc in the first six minutes of the game.

Shooting better than 50% from the field in the early-going, the Danes found themselves up by just one, 15-14. Colgate went 6-for-6 from the field to kick off the first half, missing its first shot at the 13:55 mark.

Travis Charles got in on the scoring with a low-post lay-in. Sanders and Singletary teamed up for 17 points prior to the under-12 media timeout as Matt Langel’s squad went scoreless for nearly four minutes.

The teams went back-and-forth mid-way through the half, trading three-point baskets to keep Colgate within striking distance. The Purple & Gold finally opened up a double-digit lead with a 12-0 run to end the first half. Five different players recorded points in the last 3:30 of the period to send the Danes to a 43-30 edge at the break.

Red-hot shooting continued for UAlbany to start the second half, as the Danes went 6-for-7 from the field in a five-minute span to open up a 22-point lead. Will Brown’s squad collected its largest lead of the game with 6:28 to play, after freshman Joe Cremo scored five-straight points to make the score 74-48.

The Purple & Gold went 3-for-3 from three-point range to wrap up the game, going 4-for-7 from behind the arc in the final 20 minutes.

UAlbany recorded its highest point total in a win since an 89-72 victory at UMBC on Jan. 5, 2012. The last time the Danes tallied as many points in regulation in the non-con-ference slate came on Jan. 3, 2009 against Yale 89-68.

Despite a slow shooting start this season, the Danes went 29-for-55 (.527) from the field and 12-for-19 (.632) from beyond the arc against Colgate. Each of the 11 players that entered the game for UAlbany scored at least one point.

“I think we’re a good shooting team,” said head coach Will Brown. “We’re not going to shoot it like we did tonight every night, but I thought we were unselfish against a difficult team to guard. This was a good effort overall, and it was nice to have a good crowd tonight for the home opener.”

Ray Sanders finished with 24 points on 8-for-10 from the field and 6-for-6 from three-point land. He is the first Division I Great Dane to go perfect from the three-point line with six or more attempts. The senior also netted a career-high five steals to go with six rebounds and three assists.

Evan Singletary matched his career-best with 21 points. Peter Hooley pushed his double-digit scoring streak to 10 games on Thursday night, going for 11 points.

Will Brown is in his 16th season overall as the University at Albany’s men’s basketball head coach, after spending one season in an interm capacity. Brown, the longest tenured coach in the America East Conference, has led the program to five conference champion-ships, five NCAA Tournament appearances, a CollegeInsider.com CIT Postseason Tournament appearance, CBI Postseason appear-ance and an unparalleled success in the classroom.

The Great Danes made their first program appearance in the CBI in 2015-16, marking the fifth consecutive year with national postsea-son attention for Brown’s squad. UAlbany won an all-time best 24 regular season games, going 24-7 prior to the postseason. Brown & co., reached 20 wins at the fastest pace in program history en route to a 13-3 clip in America East Conference play. The 2015-16 Danes won 19 straight games in the confines of SEFCU Arena, including ending Stony Brook’s nation-best 18-game winning streak on Feb. 17. The Purple & Gold was also a national leader in free throws made, free throws attempted, free throw percentage and three-point field goal percentage defense.

2014-15 was an unprecedented season for the Great Danes, earn-ing their best Division I winning percentage (24-9, .727) and tying their highest win total. UAlbany went 15-1 in America East Confer-ence play and 8-0 on the road to earn its second regular season title and No. 1 seed in the league tournament. Playing all three confer-ence postseason games in the confines of SEFCU Arena, Brown earned his third consecutive and fifth overall America East Tourna-ment title, 51-50 over Stony Brook. Peter Hooley hit a last-second three from the top of the key for the victory. The Danes continued on to Columbus, Ohio in the East Regional to face No. 3 seed Oklaho-ma as the 14-seed in the NCAA Second Round. UAlbany fell 69-60 in its fifth Division I NCAA Tournament appearance. In the midst of its 15-1 America East record, the Purple & Gold went on a Division I record 13-game winning streak from Jan. 3-Feb. 13. Brown also took his 200th career victory on Jan. 14 against Binghamton, 73-58.

Brown earned the program’s first NCAA Division I Tournament win in 2013-14 when the Purple & Gold took down Mount St. Mary’s in the First Four 71-64 in Dayton, Ohio. He led UAlbany to its second-straight America East title in 2013-14, as the No. 4 seed. The Great Danes repeated their feat as the lowest seed to ever win the tourna-ment, once again knocking off the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds and taking the title on the road.

He was also named the top value coach among Division I head coaches in 2013-14 by HoopDirt.com.

Brown was appointed as UAlbany’s head coach on March 13, 2002, and has worked on the collegiate level since 1995. He became the 15th head coach in the history of the program.
