Willoughbeast Ron Willoughby is coming off a breakout season for the Bulls. After registering only three catches as a sophomore in 2013, the senior wide receiver had 50 catches for 771 yards and nine touchdowns last season. For his efforts, the Ohio native earned third-team All-MAC accolades in 2014. This season, Willoughby ranks second on the team in receiving with a career-best 56 catches for 752 yards and six touchdowns. He has had eight or more catches in a game four times this season, including a career-best 11 receptions against Akron last week.

JJ is OK Jordan Johnson made the most of his opportu-nity to start at running back for the Bulls. The junior running back rushed for a career-high 147 yards and two touchdowns against the Ohio in his first career start on October 24. He followed that up by rushing

for 123 yards and two more scores at Miami (OH) on October 29. He is just the second running back in UB’s FBS era to rush for 100 yards in each of his first two starts - joining teammate Anthone Taylor. Over the last five games, Johnson has averaged 86 yards and scored eight touchdowns. He now leads the team in rushing with 701 yards and has scored eight touchdowns. He is averaging 4.9 yards per carry.

One Two Punch The Bulls have a good one-two punch at running back with Anthone Taylor (#1) and Jordan Johnson (#2). Taylor has rushed for 744 yards on 166 carries. Johnson has rushed for 734 yards on 152 carries. It marks the first time in UB’s FBS era that it has had two running backs rush for over 700 yards in the same season.

Berry Good Linebacker Brandon Berry began his career at UB as a safety. Due to injuries he has been moved to linebacker in 2015 and that move has paid dividends. The junior Detroit native ranks second and ranks 10th in the MAC with 95 tackles. Earlier this season, he had double-digit tackles in five straight games to become just the second UB player to accomplish the feat in the Bulls FBS era (since 1999). J.J. Gibson did it in 2001.

I’ll Take That The UB defense had four interceptions in the win over Ohio. It was the first time the Bulls had four interceptions in a game since having four against Western Michigan in 2012. The team’s 11 interceptions are nine more than the

In his first full season at cor-ner, Ross has two interceptions and 17 pass breakups. He had a 39-yard pick six against Florida Atlantic on September 19. The junior from Bethlehem, PA ranks sixth in the nation in passes defended, averaging 1.7 per game and has already set a new school record for single-season passes defended.

The Kids Are Alright Coach Leipold has given his young players a chance to play this season. So far this year, seven true fresh-men and eight redshirt-freshmen have played in a game. Freshman Brandon Stanback has started three games at safety, Cameron Lewis (CB), Charles Harris (DE), Justin Brandon (DT), Duke Hwang (DT), Brandon Smiley (WR) and Johnathan Hawkins (RB) have also seen action as true freshmen.

Eight is Enough Matt Weiser, Marcus McGill and Ron Willoughby each had eight catches against Bowling Green on Oct. 3. It was the first time in school history three different UB players had eight receptions in a game. Weiser had eight catches for 90 yards; McGill had a career-best eight catches for 88 yards and Willoughby had eight catches for 73 yards and a touchdown.

Popular Targets For the first time in school history, the Bulls had two different players record 10 catches in a game. Senior tight end Matt Weiser had 10 catches for 131 yards - both career highs. Senior wide receiver Ron Willoughby had 10 receptions for 122 yards against Nevada on September 26.

Martinez Ends Punt Return Drought Jacob Martinez did something against Albany a UB punt return hadn’t done since George W. Bush’s first term, return a punt for a touchdown. Martinez returned a punt 86 yards to paydirt - the first punt returned for a touchdown since Andre Forde had an 83-yard punt return touchdown against Lehigh on Aug. 29, 2002. It was a span of 154 games and ended the longest drought in the FBS. Martinez was seven years old when Forde returned the last punt for a TD. For his accomplishment, Martinez was named the Mid-American Conference East Division Special Teams Player of the Week.

Tyler Grassman Named a Semifinalist for the 2015 Campbell Trophy

Senior punter Tyler Grassman has been named a semifinalist for the 2015 William V. Campbell Trophy. Considered by many to be the “Academic Heisman,” the Campbell Trophy recognizes an individual as the absolute best football scholar-athlete in the nation. A business administration major with a 3.80 grade point average, Grassman is a two-time Academic All-MAC selection and was a 2014 and 2015 Capital One Academic All-District Football Team selection.

All You Need is Lovejoy Lovejoy, GA is a town of 6,300 and Lovejoy High School had a graduating class of 406 in 2014. Now three members of that same high school class play on the UB defense. Cornerback Brandon Williams, defensive end Randy Anyanwu and safety Jordan Collier were all teammates on the same Lovejoy team before coming to UB.

The Name Game UB defensive back Boise Ross’ full name is DuBois Ross - named for W.E.B. Du Bois, founder of the NAACP. He has two brothers, Duke Ellington Ross, named for the legendary jazz musician and Langston Ross, named after a poet and social activist.

The State University of New York, Buffalo football team ended the season in style with a dominant, 41-21, win over Massachusetts at McGuirk Stadium on Friday afternoon. The Bulls rolled up 548 yards of total offense, paced by Anthone Taylor’s career-high 237 yards rushing and two touchdowns.

“It’s a special win. I can’t describe it. It means so much to me,” interim head coach Alex Wood said. “It was fun to see our seniors go out as winners.”

For the second straight week, the UB offense was nearly unstoppable. Coming off a 55-point performance against Akron, the 96 points in the last two games tied for fourth all-time in school history for back-to-back games and the most since 1959.

Quarterback Joe Licata was 20-of-27 for 255 yards and four touchdowns. He finished the season with 29 touchdown passes, a school record for a single season.

After a scoreless first quarter, the Bulls mounted an impres-sive 17-play, 99-yard drive that took over eight minutes off the clock. A fully-extended Devon Hughes laid out for a 28-yard touchdown pass from Licata for the game’s first score. Licata found Jacob Martinez for a 31-yard touchdown late in the second quarter to give the Bulls a 13-0 lead at the half.

UB took its first possession of the second half and drove 71 yards on only six plays. Licata found Ron Willoughby over the middle from 22 yards out to give the Bulls a 20-0 lead with 10:30 left in the third quarter.

UMass scored its first touchdown of the game on its next possession to cut the lead to 20-7. However, Devin Camp-bell returned the ensuing kickoff 56 yards to the UMass 39 and, seven plays later, Hughes caught his second touch-down pass of the game (four yards) from Licata and the Bulls took a 27-7 lead.

Taylor scored on a three-yard run with 1:54 left in the third quarter to put the Bulls ahead, 34-7, and then put the ex-clamation point on the victory with a career-long 76-yard touchdown run with 3:19 left in the game.

It was Taylor’s third 200-yard game of the season and the junior running back finished the season with 1,403 yards – the second-best single-season total in school history. He became the first running back in school history to have three 200-yard rushing games in a single season.

Lee Skinner had 10 tackles and two sacks in the final game of his career. He finished his standout career sixth in school history with 344 career tackles. Fellow seniors Adam Red-den and Jake Stockman each finished with eight tackles.

The Bulls had eight pass breakups in the game. Cortney Les-ter had two in the game and finished his career one shy of the school record for career passes defended (38).

UB BUlls Weekly FootBall Release

Lance Leipold was named the 25th head coach in the history of the State University of New York, Buffalo football program on December 1, 2014.

Leipold comes to UB from Wisconsin-White-water where he compiled an astounding 109-6 record and won six Division III Nation-al Championships over his eight seasons. A six-time National Coach of the Year, Leipold

reached 100 career victories faster than any other coach in NCAA history – at any level.

“We’re excited to have Coach Leipold here in UB Blue,” White stated. “In our conversations it became obvious to me that this is a man of character. This is someone that is going to continue the tradition that we already have of recruiting high-character kids, student-first student-athletes. In short, he does it the right way.”

Leipold has gathered multiple honors from as many as five football-related organizations. He earned his sixth American Football Coaches Association Division III Coach of the Year award in 2014. He has won the award more times than any active coach at any level. He passed the late Joe Paterno, who was a five-time recipient of the award.

In his first season as head coach at Whitewater, The Warhawks went 14-1 and won the national title. He led the Warhawks back to the national cham-pionship game in 2008, but they lost to Mount Union, 31-26. Wisconsin-Whitewater went 15-0, winning the national championship in 2009, 2010 and 2011 and won 46 straight games over that span. Following a 7-3 season in 2012, UWW went a perfect 15-0 and won the national championship in 2013 and followed with another perfect 15-0 season and a national title in 2014.

“I’d like to thank Dr. Tripathi and Danny White for this outstanding oppor-tunity to be the 25th head football coach at New York’s university,” said Leipold. “This is an unbelievable opportunity. It’s ready to take off. It’s going to take work, it’s going to take commitment, and that’s what makes athlet-ics, especially football, so competing. It’s the ultimate team game and I’m glad to be apart of this team.”

In Division III, where athletic scholarships aren’t a part of the game, Leipold was able to recruit top-notch talent to the campus in southeastern Wis-consin. During his tenure, running back Justin Beaver earned the Gagliardi Trophy as the top player in Division III. Brent Allen earned the Division III Rimington Award as the top center. Jeff Schebler was the first recipient of the Fred Mitchell Award, given to the top placekicker in Division II or III. Tail-back Levell Coppage earned D3football.com Offensive Player of the Year accolades, and Cole Klotz was selected D3football.com Defensive Player of the Year. Defensive back Jared Kiesow was named an NCAA Elite 88 Award winner. The Warhawks have piled up 56 All-America honors under Leipold’s tutelage.

A native of Jefferson, WI, Leipold began his coaching career at Wisconsin-Whitewater in 1987 as a quarterbacks coach and then wide receivers coach. He moved to the University of Wisconsin from 1991-93 as a graduate assis-tant and helped the Badgers to a Big Ten title and a Rose Bowl appearance in 1993.

As an assistant coach at Division II Nebraska-Omaha from 1994-2000,

Leipold helped turn the Mavericks from a 1-10 team in 1994 into three-time North Central Conference champions during his tenure. After being promoted to offensive coordinator in 2000, he moved on to the University of Nebraska, where he served for three seasons under current Ohio head coach Frank Solich. He was on the same staff as former UB head coach Turn-er Gill. The Cornhuskers competed in the national championship game in 2001 and earned bowl bids in 2002 and 2003.

He returned to Nebraska-Omaha to serve as associate head coach and of-fensive coordinator from 2004-06. The Mavericks finished 8-3 and won the conference championship each of his three seasons.

Leipold is a 1987 graduate of Wisconsin-Whitewater where he was a stand-out quarterback for the Warhawks. He ranks second in school history in ca-reer pass attempts (647), fourth in yards (4,277), sixth in completions (303) and tied for 10th with 27 touchdowns. He was inducted into the Whitewater Hall of Fame in 2003.

“This morning I had the chance to meet with the team. What an impressive group of young men,” said Leipold. “To see the looks on their faces, I know they’re hungry and ready to get to work, and I’m equally as excited.”

Leipold and his wife, Kelly, have a daughter, Lindsey, and a son, Landon.

BUFFALO 51, ALBANY 14 PENN STATE 27, BUFFALO 14SEP. 5, 2015 • UB STADIUM • BUFFALO, NY SEP. 12, 2015 • BEAVER STADIUM • UNIVERSITY PARK, PA

BUFFALO, NY - Joe Licata threw two touchdowns to lead Buffalo to a 51-14 win over Albany (N.Y.) on Saturday in the season opener for both teams.

Licata finished with 246 yards for the Bulls. Anthone Taylor ran for 104 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

The Bulls followed an early Albany touchdown with 24 unanswered points before halftime, including a Licata TD pass to Marcus McGill and rushing touchdowns by Taylor and Jordan Johnson.

Taylor ran for another score early in the second half and Licata hit Jacob Martinez from 20 yards to give the Bulls a 38-7 ad-vantage with 9:08 left in the third quarter. Albany scored again early in the fourth to make it 38-14 but a rushing touchdown by Tony Daniel and an 86-yard punt return by Martinez for another score sealed the win for Buffalo.

D.J. Cook threw for 104 yards and a touchdown for the Great Danes.

UNIVERSITY PARK, PA - As Christian Hackenberg walked off the field Saturday, his blue jersey and white pants were nearly as clean as when he walked out of the tunnel four hours earlier.

It was a welcome sight for the Penn State junior quarterback’s teammates, coaches and Penn State fans who watched as Hackenberg was sacked 10 times the week before. But a reshuffled offensive line with kept Buffalo pass rushers off Hacken-berg and Penn State’s offense slowly built momentum to outlast Buffalo 27-14.

True freshmen Brandon Polk and Saquon Barkley each ran for touchdowns for Penn State (1-1). Hackenberg completed 14 of 27 passes for 128 yards and a touchdown and Joey Julius kicked a pair of field goals in the 27-14 win.

Buffalo quarterback Joe Licata tossed touchdown passes to Ron Willoughby and Marcus McGill.

But the Bulls struggled to move the ball into the red zone for most of the afternoon. Buffalo (1-1) punted nine times, turned the ball over on downs once and Licata was intercepted by defensive end Carl Nassib in the second quarter.

Nassib led Penn State’s defense with three sacks while tackle Austin Johnson led the Nittany Lions with nine tackles.

After the teams traded futile opening possessions, Bulls kicker Adam Mitcheson missed a 47-yard field goal that would’ve given the Bulls a first-quarter lead.

Penn State took a lead it would never relinquish and got help from its special teams to do so.

Redshirt freshman DeAndre Thompkins returned a second-quarter punt 58 yards to set Penn State’s offense up in the red zone. Two plays later, Polk took a sweep around the left side of Buffalo’s defense untouched for a 22-yard score.

Joey Julius added a 22-yard field goal in the second quarter and the Nittany Lions led 10-0 at halftime. The Bulls used their second possession of the second half to go 78 yards with 11 plays. The drive ended when Licata hit Willoughby in the corner of the end zone and the Bulls’ receiver fought off tight coverage from Christian Campbell to secure the catch.

Penn State responded with a 12-play scoring drive but had to settle for a 21-yard field goal from Julius after sophomore tight end Mike Gesicki dropped two would-be touchdown passes -- one at the goal line. Julius’ kick gave Penn State a 13-7 lead.

It was the first of three consecutive scoring drives for the Nittany Lions. Barkley ripped off a 33-yard run then hurdled a Buffalo defender en route to a 17-yard gain to set up Hackenberg’s 5-yard touchdown pass to DaeSean Hamilton that gave Penn State a 20-7 lead. Hackenberg hit Chris Godwin for a 38-yard gain down the sideline before Barkley plunged in from nine yards out to cap Penn State’s scoring.

Penn State’s reshuffled offensive line -- Andrew Nelson moved to left tackle, Brendan Mahon moved to right tackle from left guard and Derek Dowrey started at left guard -- gave Hackenberg time to take the deep shot. Hackenberg had no such time in the season opener wherein Penn State threw deep just once.

But Penn State lost Nelson to an unspecified injury in the first half. Nelson was helped off the field and did not return. Palmer took his spot in the lineup.

Licata hit McGill from 10 yards out with less than five minutes to play.

BUFFALO 33, FLORIDA ATLANTIC 15 NEVADA 24, BUFFALO 21SEP. 19, 2015 • FAU STADIUM • BOCA RATON, FL SEP. 26, 2015 • UB STADIUM • BUFFALO, NY

BOCA RATON, FL -- Travis Pitzonka returned a fumble for a score -- the first of three Buffalo defensive touchdowns on the day -- and the Bulls beat Florida Atlantic 33-15 on Saturday.

Buffalo (2-1) trailed 9-0 toward the end of the second quarter with Florida Atlantic driving when Jay Warren was stuffed on third-and-short and coughed it up. Pitzonka gathered the fumble and rumbled 60 yards for the score.

In the third quarter, Ryan Williamson returned a fumble 34 yards to set up Adam Mitcheson’s 19-yard field goal and Boise Ross returned an interception 39 yards for a touchdown. The Bulls forced a safety and later scored on Jordan Johnson’s 19-yard run. Late in the fourth, Okezie Alozie sacked Jason Driskel to force another fumble, and Brandon Crawford picked it up and took it 11 yards for Buffalo’s third defensive touchdown.

Florida Atlantic turned it over five times despite running up 490 yards of offense, compared to 290 for Buffalo.

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- James Butler ran for 177 yards and a touchdown, Don Jackson added 113 yards and two scores and Nevada beat Buffalo 24-21 on Saturday.

Jackson’s second TD run gave the Wolfpack (2-2) a 24-13 lead with 10:25 left in the fourth quarter.

Buffalo (2-2) answered with an eight-play, 75-yard TD-scoring drive and punctuated it with a 2-point conversion to pull within 24-21 only 2:19 later.

The Bulls defense then forced two Nevada punts down the stretch, but their offense turned it over both times and the Wolf-pack were able to run out the clock.

Nevada fell behind early, but Butler had a 91-yard carry through the middle of the defense and immediately followed with a 5-yard TD run to even the score at 7. Jackson added a 55-yard TD run before the end of the first quarter to give the Wolfpack the lead for good at 14-7.
