University College Format and Style Requirements

This document contains the University College format and style requirements for writing assignments across the curriculum. The format and style requirements in this document are specific to University College. In addition, assignments follow the 8th edition of A Manual for Writers of Research Papers, Theses, and Dissertations: Chicago Style for Students and Researchers (Turabian). However, the requirements in this document take precedence over format and style requirements in Turabian. If there is a conflict or discrepancy between the University College requirements listed in this document and Turabian, the student must follow the University College Format and Style Requirements document.

All assignments must conform to the Turabian, 8th ed. author-date citation style.

[NOTE: Students who completed MALS 4020 Graduate Research and Writing prior to summer quarter 2013 may follow the 7th edition of Turabian after notifying and receiving approval from the instructor. If students do not notify the instructor, they may be graded against the 8th edition.]

Turabian, Kate L. 2013. A Manual for Writers of Research Papers, Theses, and Dissertations: Chicago Style for Students and Researchers. 8th ed. Revised by Wayne C. Booth, Gregory G. Colomb, Joseph M. Williams, and University of Chicago Press Editorial Staff. Chicago: The University of Chicago Press.

Unless otherwise noted in the assignment, all writing assignments are submitted as MS Word documents. The University of Denver requires that students use Word 2007/2010/2013 for PC or Word 2008/2011 for Mac.

    General Requirements

Margins: One inch on all sides. The right-hand margin must not be justified.

    Fonts: Calibri, 12 point

    Text Format:

Use Microsoft Words format and style functions, generally found under Line and Paragraph Spacing under the Home tab in MS Word (e.g., hanging indent for references, indented text blocks for quotations, indented first lines in paragraphs).

URLs in source citation wrap; this format is not automatic in MS Word. There are two ways to meet this format requirement:

o Replace all spaces in a reference citation with non-breaking spaces (CTRL + Shift + Space).

    Revised 3/10/2014

  • LastName-2

o Insert a no-width optional break character within the URL. Further instruction may be found at the following website: http://www.techrepublic.com/blog/microsoft-office/use-words-no-width-optional-break-character-to-facilitate-wrapping/. (In this case, the no-width-optional-break was inserted after blog/ in the URL.)

Use widow/orphan control functions (under Line and Paragraph Spacing) to keep headings with the text that follows. A heading should never appear alone at the bottom of a page.

Line Spacing: The entire document must be uniformly double spaced, including the abstract and reference list. (This document is not double spaced.)

Word Spacing: A single space is used after punctuation marks, including after the end of a sentence.

    Indentation:

Paragraphs are indented with standard 0.5 indentation. Block quotes are indented with standard 0.5 indentation on the left. They are not

    indented on the right.

Tables and Figures: Follow format requirements in Turabian Chapter 8 and Chapter 26, including required author-date source citation.

Citation of Sources: All source citation must follow the Turabian, 8th ed. author-date citation style. Refer to Chapter 18 for the rules of citation and to Chapter 19 for guidance and specific examples of correct author-date style.

NOTE: There are many software programs available to format citations, including RefWorks and the built-in reference list function in MS Word. Many of these programs do not conform to the specific requirements of the Turabian author-date style of citation. When using citation software, students are responsible for ensuring that the final citation results comply with the Turabian author-date requirements in the manual.

Order and Format of Assignment Content

Individual assignments may require some or all of the elements listed below. Follow these format and style requirements as they apply to each assignment.

Page Order: Follow this page order for the required elements unless otherwise stated in the assignment.

    Revised 3/10/2014

  • LastName-3

The first page is the title page. The second page is the abstract. The third page is the table of contents. For subsequent pages, follow the Turabian Appendix: Paper Format and Submission.

Page Numbering: All pages are numbered. The page numbering of this document follows the page numbering requirement for the body of the paper.

Page numbers must appear in the upper right-hand corner and are preceded by the authors last name. A single hyphen (leave no space on either side) appears between the authors last name and the page number, e.g., Jones-15.

The front matter (e.g., title page, abstract, table of contents, list of figures, etc.) is numbered with lower case Roman numerals. The page number does not appear on the Cover Page, even though it is page i.

The body of the paper is numbered with Arabic numerals starting with 1. o To restart Words automatic page numbering, insert a section break to separate

the front matter from the body of the paper. Under the Insert tab, use Page Number to format page numbers.

The page number font is the required University College font: Calibri 12 point.

Title Page: The title page must follow the required University College format. There is a 3 margin at the top of the page.

NOTE: Two examples of title pages are provided at the end of this document: an assignment cover page and a capstone cover page for proposals and projects; replace anything in brackets, including the brackets, with your specific assignment information.

For example, for an assignment due May 7, 2014:

    [Date (e.g., March 14, 2014)] is replaced with May 7, 2014

Abstract or Executive Summary: The abstract or executive summary summarizes the point of the assignment. It must be non-evaluative and mention results without beginning the discussion of those results. Unless otherwise stated in the assignment:

The abstract or executive summary is always the first page (i.e., page ii) after the Title Page.

It is no longer than 120 words. It is a single, double spaced paragraph. It is not indented.

    Revised 3/10/2014

  • LastName-4

Table of Contents: Follow the guidance in Turabian A.2.1.6.

NOTE: Use the Table of Contents function under the References tab in Word to build the table of contents. Make sure the table of contents is in the required font. Video tutorials for creating table of contents in Word are available on the Microsoft Office support site: http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/word-help/create-and-customize-a-table-of-contents-RZ102634105.aspx?CTT=1&client=1.

Headings: Follow the sections and subsections guidance in A.2.2.4. If the assignment does not have specific heading requirements, follow the heading example in Turabian A.2.2.4.
