DescriptionThe University Certificate in TertiaryPreparation is a one-semester programthat enables students to receive aUniversity certificate on successfulcompletion. It is designed for studentswho may have already met the academicentry requirements for a QUTundergraduate or postgraduate degree,but who may not have met the Englishlanguage and/or prerequisiterequirements.*
This program provides two alternativestreams:
Stream A is designed for students whohave not met English and/or prerequisiterequirements for their chosenundergraduate or postgraduate course.Most students may undertake one degreeunit (for credit) whilst enrolled in theUniversity Certificate in TertiaryPreparation program.
Stream B is for students who have met
English requirements but not prerequisiterequirement for their degree, or who maywish to improve the standard of theiracademic English. These students maytake one or two degree units (for credit)whilst enrolled in the University Certificatein Tertiary Preparation Program.
Both streams include intensivepreparation for academic language,lateral thinking, research and presentationskills required for successful tertiarystudy. Small classes and dedicated staffensure an excellent learning environment.Additional support is provided byLanguage and Welfare Advisers.
Alternatively, there may be some studentswho have already met both the academicand English requirements for a QUTdegree entry, but who would prefer toundertake the University Certificate inTertiary Preparation in order to preparefor academic study in a different tertiaryenvironment.
*Students who require a Student Visashould check the English languagerequirements for a student visa from theircountry of origin.
Course CompletionStudents must obtain at least a grade of 4(Pass)in all units.
ProgressionIn order to progress to an award course,students must:

DescriptionThe aim of the EAP Advanced course isto assist international students to upgradetheir English proficiency level foradmission to university programs withhigher English language levelrequirements. The course is designed toprepare students for independent studyand to familiarise them with an Australianacademic setting in terms of studytechniques and student/lecturer relationsand expectations.
Course CompletionTo be eligible to receive EAP Advancedcertification at the end of the course,students must complete all courserequirements.

DescriptionEAP Plus has been specifically developedfor students who wish to commence theirentry into an English for AcademicPurposes course earlier. Successfulapplicants can enter the course at pre-intermediate level and immediately begindeveloping their English language andstudy skills in an academic context.
EAP Plus enables students to begindeveloping their English language andstudy skills in an academic context from apre-intermediate level. The course aims toprepare students to attain the level ofproficiency required for gaining entranceto, and succeeding in QUT undergraduateand postgraduate award programs. EAPPlus courses include:• Academic reading and note-making• Academic writing• Listening and note-taking from lectures• Speaking in academic settings• Seminars and presentations• Academic study skills• Computing and Internet skills• Library research
During the first 12 weeks of the EAP Plus
course, students will develop theirparagraph writing, reading, listening andnote-taking skills through theme-basedtopics at an introductory academic level,along with speaking and oral presentationskills in a highly-supported environment.Weekly grammar, paraphrasing andvocabulary development supports thereading, writing and note-takingcomponents. Reading skills are alsoenhanced via extended reading practiceand specific reading skills lessons.
The second half of the course will furtherdevelop independent study skills enablingstudents to operate effectively in anAustralian academic setting in terms ofstudy techniques and student/lecturerrelations and expectations.
EAP Plus has its own internal assessmentconsisting of exams and assignments,and successful students will meet QUT’sEnglish language requirements.
Course CompletionTo be eligible to receive EAP PlusCertificate at the end of the course,studfents must complete all courserequirements.
