music institutions.

THEATRE GUILD PERFORMANCES - WRITE OH! 

The Theatre Guild proudly presents three short pieces of new work

written, performed and directed by students of the University of

Adelaide in the spectacular setting of the Barr Smith Library Reading

Room. Directed by Michael Allen and re-staged for Open Day by

Bart Csorba. Short, sharp, dynamic performances which run for

approximately 20 minutes.

ADELAIDE UNIVERSITY UNION (AUU)+ CLUBS, SPORTS & ENTERTAINMENT

There’s two parts to university - study and the social aspect. The

Adelaide University Union (AUU) provides everything you’ll need

outside of the class room and enriches your life on campus! These

services and events give you an exciting campus community and

culture that will be both meaningful and useful.Visit the Taib Mahmud Court to experience a taste of what the AUU

does all year round. Listen to live music, watch some demonstrations,

eat some tasty food or get a free massage or painted face! A range of

clubs available to join will also be on display. Joining a club is a great

Ecoversity is the University’s sustainability program, dedicated to

reducing the resource footprint of the University. The Ecoversity

team works on a range of awareness and promotion activities to

create a culture of sustainability on campus.

At Open Day join Eco, the Ecoversity mascot to build a recycled art

project, celebrate recycling on campus and reuse discarded items ina fun and creative way. The Ecoversity team will also be providing

pedal power to make fruit smoothies for our visitors to the event.

THE THREE MINUTE THESIS(3MT) COMPETITION

As part of this inaugural competition, higher degree by

research students will have three minutes to presenta compelling oration on their thesis topic and its

significance in language appropriate to a

non-specialist audience.

As part of Open Day the 10 faculty heat

finalists will have their chance to present one

more time in front of the judges’ panel with one

student to become the “University winner”.

Join us and help to decide who should

industry to tackle state, national and international research priorities.

TOURSMITCHELL BUILDING

Go on a self-guided tour of the University’s oldest building

during the University of Adelaide Open Day. Situated next to the

Art Gallery of South Australia, the Mitchell Building was first

occupied in 1882 and housed the entire University in its infancy.

Today it accommodates the University’s senior administration,

including the Office of the Vice-Chancellor and President. A warmemorial for students, staff and graduates who served in World

War 1 is located in this beautiful heritage building along with

portraits of former Vice-Chancellors.

Information leaflets on the Mitchell Building will be available and

University of Adelaide staff and guides will be on hand to answer

questions about the Mitchell and other heritage buildings on the

North Terrace Campus.

MUSEUM OF CLASSICAL ARCHAEOLOGY Explore the

treasures on display in the Museum including Attic Marble Lekythos

fragment (4th century BCE), terracotta sarcophagus from Tarquina

(Southern Etruria, Roman, ca 100 BCE) and Villanovan cremation urn

(Northern Italy, 9th century BCE).

TATE MUSEUM The Tate Museum, established in 1925, and

named after Ralph Tate, Elder Professor of Natural Sciences at the

University from 1875-1901. The collection includes minerals, rocks,

and fossils that illustrate geological phenomena, and specimens

collected by Sir Douglas Mawson.

PUBLIC ART Tour of North Terrace public artworks by South

Australian artists on the North Terrace campus. The tour will

encompass work by Geoff Wilson, Greg Johns, Hossein Valamanesh

LIBRARY, ART& HERITAGE

BARR SMITH LIBRARY

The Barr Smith Library  I 7  is South Australia’slargest research library. The Library will be open

from 9am-5pm and feature a range of art and

cultural experiences.

Visitors are encouraged to visit the Barr Smith

Reading Room. The Reading Room is one of

the University’s hidden treasures. Enter from

the grand steps on the eastern side of the

building or follow the signs from the Library’s

main entrance to Level 2 North. Friends of the

Library will be there to greet visitors, showthem the Reading Room and answer questions.

Catch short performances by the University of

Adelaide Theatre Guild of students’ work, and of

Elder Conservatorium of Music acoustic groups.

Come and see a ‘Life Impact’ exhibition on the world-changing research

contributions of some of our graduates and academics. The exhibition

is on Level 1, outside the Rare Books and Special Collections. Library

staff will be available near the Service Enquiries Desk, located just

inside the main entrance doors, to answer questions.

ART & HERITAGE COLLECTIONSThe Art & Heritage Collections offer an interdisciplinary program

of activities which highlights arts and cultural aspects of the

University life and academic disciplines. It is produced with the

support of the Barr Smith Library.

Graduate Program in Art History and Curatorial & Museum

Studies Assoc. Professor Catherine Speck will talk about exciting

opportunities in Art History and Curatorial & Museum Studies,

taught jointly by the University and the Art Gallery of South

The Judges Series Arthur Boyd chose the theme for his series of twelve paintings, The Judges ,

in the hope that judges would never forget about human frailties and the susceptibility to

temptation. The series was purchased jointly by the University and the Adelaide University Union

Full Circle Catherine Buddle, an Adelaide based artist with a background in biological sciences,

scientific illustration and graphic design, creates an exhibition exploring transformation and

representation of the psyche through a series of meticulously crafted and beautiful objects.I 7  9am to 4.30pm: Foyer, Barr Smith Library
