Temporary employment
Many employees at K1 have temporary employment The position may by definition be li-
mited or it might be that you have a substitute position temporarily filling in for another
person To have a temporary position often involves uncertainty and sometimes also wor-
ry We apologize for any inconvenience to the individual and will try to reduce the use of
temporary positions but are bound by rules and a very tight budget
Previously the private sector often represented job insecurity while the public sector was syno-
nymous with job security and stability At the university this is no longer the case Academic
recruitment positions are time-limited PhD and postdoc positions can only be once at the same
institution They should be recruited for positions also outside of the university This is a required
temporality by society This is however a major challenge for many employees The career path
for science graduates in medicine is far more difficult than for physicians Positions as Rese-
archer or Senior engineer can be used but these are usually temporary and often rely on external
funding
Academic 20 positions are temporary Here the principle applies that others that might be
even better qualified should take over the 20 position after eg 5 years Although most are ex-
tended the temporary nature represents an uncertainty for the individual often a burden The in-
stitution has chosen to do it this way to emphasize the demands of research and teaching per-
formance
The temporality connected to substitute positions is probably the most worrisome It is not princi-
pally justified The combination of number of leaves time-consuming hiring processes and a bud-
get deficit entails uncertainty and sometimes poor personnel management The entire university
sector is criticized because of too much use of temporary and substitute positions K1 will try to
do better We should use less temporality and
certainly have a better dialogue with employees in
temporary positions or with uncertain employment

What issues are you concerned with -Issues I find important are 1) Quality in education and research and 2) the financial situation of the faculty Which issues are discussed in the Faculty Board -The issues discussed in the Faculty Board are mainly matters at faculty level such as budget and audit of study program descriptions as well as all hiring of personnel in permanent scientific positions It is the faculty administration that
prepares cases to the Board There have been no cases which exclusively have concerned K1 I am also member of the Department Council for K1 and get as such a good insight into the activities of the depart-ment Eyvind Roslashdahl is former Department Director at the Department of Ophthalmology at Haukeland Universi-ty Hospital (2001-2008) now a professor at the Department of Ophthalmology (University of Bergen) and chief physician at the Department of Ophthalmology (the hospital part time) He is also the leader of a small research group working on genetic eye diseases
