2009 Cotton Harvest Aid Research Summary

This report summarizes the applied defoliation research studies conducted during 2009. All projects were

conducted at the West Side Research and Extension Center. Five studies were conducted on Acala cotton.

Although it is one of the last management decisions in the cotton production cycle, defoliation timing and

application are critical to producing a profitable crop. Improper timing will compromise both seed cotton yield and

quality. In light of the premium and discounts for fiber quality brought about by High Volume Instrumentation (HVI),

proper choice and timing of harvest aid chemicals are of paramount importance. Ideally, the proper harvest aid materials

should defoliate the entire plant within 14 days after application with minimal desiccation. However, plant maturity,

moisture status, nitrogen status, and environmental conditions dictate this response.

The objective of these studies was to define the most appropriate conditions for ideal defoliation and crop

termination. In addition, it is necessary to evaluate alternative, as well as new materials, to current defoliation programs

in a manner to insure optimum performance and minimum impact on fiber quality.

Cotton Harvest Aid Management 2009 Trial 1 - In previous years Ginstar treatments at 4-6oz rate applied at the 4 nodes above cracked boll followed by a

secondary treatment of 6-8 oz of Ginstar gave 20 percent higher defoliation, no difference in desiccation, and 10 percent

improved open boll compared to similar treatments with a two shot approach applied at the standard 6 NACB stage. In

2009, 4 NACB treatments had improved defoliation, open boll, and desiccation, with slight significant differences in the

yield. Though 6 NACB has potential for late fields to bring about an earlier harvest, 4 NACB produced a more desirable

outcome.

Trial 2 – In the 2-Step Approach in Acala cotton, application timings made significant differences in defoliation,

desiccation, and open boll. Applying treatments at 15% OB followed by 70% OB produced less desirable results

compared to treatments applied at 15% OB followed by 50% OB followed by 70% OB and 50% OB followed by 70% OB

which gave two times better results.

Trial 3 – Similiarities and differences were observed when comparing Ginstar + Finish herbicides versus Adios + Prep

herbicides in Acala cotton. Treatments consisting of Ginstar + Finish produced higher percents compared to Adios + Prep

treatments, 21 DAT in defoliation and desiccation. Both herbicide mixtures gave similar percentages in open boll.

Trial 4 – The defoliation screening study in Acala cotton showed which herbicides applied at certain rates produced the

best results. In defoliation, ET 2 floz + Ginstar 6 floz +CottonQuik 3 pts + Agridex 1 pt followed by ET 2.75 floz +

Gramaxone Inteon 16 floz + Induce 1 pt gave the best 21 DAT. In desiccation, Shark 0.5 floz + Ginstar 6 floz +

CottonQuik 3 pts + Agridex 1 pt followed by Shark 1 floz + Gramaxone Inteon 18 floz + Induce 1 pt gave best results 21

DAT. And in open boll, Ginstar 6 oz + Prep 2 pt + Agridex 1 pt followed by Defol 7 1.6 qts + Gramaxone Inteon 16 floz

+ Induce 1 pt produced highest results 21 DAT. Overall treatment 12 performed extremely well in defoliation,

desiccation, and open boll.

Trial 5 – The defoliation study was conducted to observe the differences between the combinations of Kafe with Adios +

Prep and Kafe with Ginstar + Finish. Identical results were produced 8, 14, and 21 DAT with the two treatments in

defoliation, desiccation, and open boll when applied at the same timings. No differences were observed.

The trial was conducted at the Westside Research Center in Five Points. This field was planted with Roundup

Ready Flex Phytogen 725RF on April 20, 2009 with seed rate of 18 lbs/A. The field was irrigated three times using

pressure bomb readings of 18-20 bars to better manage plant vigor. In addition, the field received 16 ounces of Pix Ultra

on July 2, 15 ounces of Pix Ultra on July 22. The plot size was 4-40” rows x 65’, 4 replications, with a volume of 15 gpa,

pressure of 40 psi, speed of 3.5 mph and 8002 flat fan nozzles.

The first application was applied on September 10, 2009, using a High Clearance Spider sprayer when the cotton

was at 6 nodes above cracked boll (NACB), with temperature of 87oF and wind factor of 0-1 mph. The second

application was applied on September 15, 2009, using a High Clearance Spider when the cotton was at 4NACB, with

temperature of 81oF and wind factor of 2-4 mph. The third application was applied on September 22, 2009, using a High

Clearance Spider, with temperature of 84oF and wind factor of 0-1 mph. The last application was applied on September

24, 2009, using a High Clearance Spider with temperature of 94°F with wind factor of 0-2 mph. Defoliation, desiccation,

and open boll percentages were visually recorded at 7, 14, and 21 days after treatment (DAT).

At 7 DAT, all treatments displayed various defoliation percentages, averaging approximately 30 percent.

Treatment 1 (Ginstar 4 oz + Agridex 1 pt followed by Ginstar 6 oz + Finish 20 oz + Agridex 1 pt) exhibited the lowest

average defoliation percent, 11 percent, and treatment 8 (Ginstar 4 oz + Finish 12 oz + Agridex 1 pt followed by Ginstar 6

oz + Finish 20 oz + Agridex 1 pt) exhibited the highest, 50 percent (Table 1). Desiccation averaged approximately 10

percent. Treatment 1 (Ginstar 4 oz + Agridex 1 pt followed by Ginstar 6 oz + Finish 20 oz + Agridex 1 pt) exhibited the

lowest, 3 percent, and treatment 8 (Ginstar 4 oz + Finish 12 oz + Agridex 1 pt followed by Ginstar 6 oz + Finish 20 oz +

Agridex 1 pt) exhibited the highest, 18 percent (Table 2). Open boll averaged approximately 65 percent and treatment 8

(Ginstar 4 oz + Finish 12 oz + Agridex 1 pt followed by Ginstar 6 oz + Finish 20 oz + Agridex 1 pt) showed the highest

with 76 percent (Table 3).

At 14 DAT, all treatments showed a range of defoliation percentages, with treatment 9 (Ginstar 6 oz + Finish 12

oz + Agridex 1 pt followed by Ginstar 6 oz + Finish 20 oz + Agridex 1 pt) being the highest, 69 percent, and treatment 1

(Ginstar 4 oz + Agridex 1 pt followed by Ginstar 6 oz + Finish 20 oz + Agridex 1 pt) being the lowest at 21 percent (Table

1). Desiccation was still fairly low for most treatments, but treatment 9 (Ginstar 6 oz + Finish 12 oz + Agridex 1 pt

followed by Ginstar 6 oz + Finish 20 oz + Agridex 1 pt) had the highest rating, 48 percent and treatments 1 (Ginstar 4 oz

+ Agridex 1 pt followed by Ginstar 6 oz + Finish 20 oz + Agridex 1 pt) and 2 (Ginstar 6 oz + Agridex 1 pt followed by

Ginstar 6 oz + Finish 20 oz + Agridex 1 pt) showing the lowest, 10 percent (Table 2). Open boll ratings were in the mid

70 to mid 80 percent range for most treatments with treatments 6 (Ginstar 4 oz + Agridex 1 pt followed by Ginstar 6 oz +

Finish 20 oz + Agridex 1 pt) and 9 (Ginstar 6 oz + Finish 12 oz + Agridex 1 pt followed by Ginstar 6 oz + Finish 20 oz +

Agridex 1 pt) at the highest, 84 percent, and treatments 1 (Ginstar 4 oz + Agridex 1 pt followed by Ginstar 6 oz + Finish

20 oz + Agridex 1 pt) and 5 (Ginstar 6 oz + Agridex 1 pt followed by Ginstar 8 oz + Finish 20 oz + Agridex 1 pt) at the

lowest, 75 percent (Table 3).

At 21 DAT, treatment 9 (Ginstar 6 oz + Finish 12 oz + Agridex 1 pt followed by Ginstar 6 oz + Finish 20 oz +

Agridex 1 pt) had the highest defoliation ratings at 95 percent, and treatment 1 (Ginstar 4 oz + Agridex 1 pt followed by

Ginstar 6 oz + Finish 20 oz + Agridex 1 pt) having the lowest ratings at 73 percent (Table 1). Treatment 10 (Ginstar 6 oz

+ Agridex 1 pt followed by Ginstar 8 oz + Finish 20 oz + Agridex 1 pt) also had the highest desiccation at 85 percent, and

treatment 7 (Ginstar 6 oz + Agridex 1 pt followed by Ginstar 6 oz + Finish 20 oz + Agridex 1 pt) having the lowest rating

at 35 percent (Table 2). Open boll ratings, with treatment 7 (Ginstar 6 oz + Agridex 1 pt followed by Ginstar 6 oz +

Finish 20 oz + Agridex 1 pt) showing the highest at 95 percent and treatment 2 (Ginstar 6 oz + Agridex 1 pt followed by

Ginstar 6 oz + Finish 20 oz + Agridex 1 pt) having the lowest at 87 percent (Table 3).

The plot size was 4-40” rows x 70’, 4 replications, with a volume of 15 gpa,

pressure of 30 psi at first application, pressure of 40 psi at second and third application, speed of 3.6 mph, 8003 flat fan

nozzles at first application, and 8002 flat fan nozzles at second and third applications.

The first application was applied on September 4, 2009, using a John Deere 6100 with temperatures of 82oF and a

wind factor of 2-5 mph. The second application was disbursed on September 15, 2009, using a High Cycle Spider with an

exterior temperature of 71oF and a wind factor of 2-4 mph. The third and last application was applied on September 22,

2009, using a High Cycle Spider with temperature of 75°F with wind factor of 0-3 mph. Defoliation, desiccation, and

open boll percentages were visually recorded at 13, 18, and 27 days after treatment (DAT).

At 13 DAT, all treatments displayed average defoliation percentages, averaging approximately 2 percent.

Treatment 4 (Finish 12oz + Agridex 1 pt followed by Ginstar 6oz + Finish 12oz + Agridex 1 pt) exhibited the lowest

average defoliation percent, 0 percent, and treatments 1 (Shark 1floz + Agridex 1 pt followed by Ginstar 6oz + Finish

20oz + Agridex 1 pt), 2 (Shark 1floz + Agridex 1pt followed by Ginstar 6oz + Agridex 1pt followed by Ginstar 6oz +

Finish 20oz + 1pt), and 3 (Shark 1floz + Agridex 1pt followed by Ginstar 6 oz + Finish 12oz + Agridex 1pt followed by

Ginstar 6oz + Finish 20oz + Agridex 1pt) showed highest average defoliation percent, 2 percent. Desiccation averaged

approximately 4 percent. Treatment 4 (Finish 12oz + Agridex 1 pt followed by Ginstar 6oz + Finish 12oz + Agridex 1 pt)

exhibited the lowest at 0 percent, and treatment 2 (Shark 1floz + Agridex 1pt followed by Ginstar 6oz + Agridex 1pt

followed by Ginstar 6oz + Finish 20oz + 1pt) the highest, 6 percent (Table 2). Open boll averaged 52 percent. Treatment

2 (Shark 1floz + Agridex 1pt followed by Ginstar 6oz + Agridex 1pt followed by Ginstar 6oz + Finish 20oz + 1pt)

showing the highest with 54 percent (Table 3).

At 18 DAT, all treatments displayed average defoliation percentages, averaging approximately 25 percent.

Treatments 1 (Shark 1floz + Agridex 1 pt followed by Ginstar 6oz + Finish 20oz + Agridex 1 pt) and 4 (Finish 12oz +

Agridex 1 pt followed by Ginstar 6oz + Finish 12oz + Agridex 1 pt) exhibited the lowest average defoliation percents, 19

percent, and treatment 3 (Shark 1floz + Agridex 1pt followed by Ginstar 6 oz + Finish 12oz + Agridex 1pt followed by

Ginstar 6oz + Finish 20oz + Agridex 1pt) the highest, 33 percent (Table 1). Desiccation averaged approximately 28

percent. Treatment 1 (Shark 1floz + Agridex 1 pt followed by Ginstar 6oz + Finish 20oz + Agridex 1 pt) exhibited the

The plot size was 4-40” rows x 65’, 3 replications, with a volume of 15 gpa,

pressure of 40 psi, speed of 4 mph and 8002 flat fan nozzles.

The first application was applied on September 15, using a High Clearance Spider with temperature of 73oF and

wind factor of 3-5 mph. The last application was applied on September 24, 2009, using a High Clearance Spider with

temperature of 89°F with wind factor of 0-2 mph. Defoliation, desiccation, and open boll percentages were visually

recorded at 7, 14, and 21days after treatment (DAT).

At 7 DAT, all treatments displayed average defoliation percentages, averaging approximately 27 percent.

Treatment 12 (Adios 6oz + Prep 2pt + Agridex 1pt followed by Defol 7 1.6qt + ET 2.75oz + Agridex 1pt) exhibited the

lowest average defoliation percent, 18 percent, and treatments 3 (Ginstar 6oz + Finish 20oz + Agridex 1 pt followed by

The plot size was 4-40” rows x 65’, 4 replications, with a volume of 15 gpa,

pressure of 40 psi, speed of 4 mph and 8002 flat fan nozzles.

The first application was applied on September 15, 2009, using a High Clearance Spider when the cotton was at

60% open boll, with temperature of 84oF and wind factor of 2-4 mph. The second application was applied on September

24, 2009, using a High Clearance Spider when the cotton was at 80% open boll, with temperature of 89°F with wind

factor of 0-2 mph. Defoliation, desiccation, and open boll percentages were visually recorded at 7, 14, and 21 days after

treatment (DAT).

At 7 DAT, all treatments which were sprayed at 60% OB displayed average defoliation percentages of 43 percent

(Table 1). On the treatment 9 (Shark 2.75floz + Ginstar 8oz + Agridex 1pt) showed percentages of 55 at 7 DAT.

Desiccation averaged approximately 37 percent on all treatments sprayed at 60% OB (Table 2). On treatment 11 (Def 2pt

+ CottonQuik 3pt + Agridex 1pt) the percentages showed 55. Open boll averaged approximately 81 percent on all

Jon Wrobles, Mark Keeley, Matt Mills, Craig Yancy, Tony Garcia,

Sara Jo Avila, Ed Scott, Merf Solorio, WSREC Staff

The trial was conducted at the Westside Research Center in Five Points. This field was planted with Roundup

Ready Flex Phytogen 725RF on April 20, 2009 with seed rate of 18 lbs/A. The field was irrigated three times using

pressure bomb readings of 18-20 bars to better manage plant vigor. In addition, the field received 16 ounces of Pix Ultra

on July 2, 15 ounces of Pix Ultra on July 22. The plot size was 4-40” rows x 70’, 4 replications, with a volume of 15 gpa,

pressure of 40 psi, speed of 3.5 mph and 8002 flat fan nozzles.

The first application was applied on September 28, 2009, using a High Cycle Spider when the cotton was at 60%

open boll, with temperature of 89oF and wind factor of 2-4 mph. The last application was applied on October 8, 2009,

using a High Cycle Spider with temperature of 49°F with wind factor of 4 mph. Defoliation, desiccation, and open boll

percentages were visually recorded at 8, 14, and 21days after treatment (DAT).

At 8 DAT, both treatments displayed average defoliation percentages, averaging approximately 37 percent.

Treatment 2 (Kafe 7floz + Adios 6floz + Prep 2pt + Agridex 1pt) exhibited the lower average defoliation percent, 36

percent, and treatment 1 (Kafe 7floz + Ginsatr 6 floz + Finish 12floz + Agridex 1 pt) the higher, 38 percent (Table 1).

Desiccation averaged approximately 14 percent. Treatment 2 (Kafe 7floz + Adios 6floz + Prep 2pt + Agridex 1pt)

exhibited the lower average dessication percent, 13 percent, and treatment 1 (Kafe 7floz + Ginsatr 6 floz + Finish 12floz +

Agridex 1 pt) the higher, 15 percent (Table 2). Open boll averaged approximately 84 percent with both treatments

producing 84 percent (Table 3).

At 14 DAT, all treatments displayed average defoliation percentages, averaging approximately 52 percent.

Treatment 2 (Kafe 7floz + Adios 6floz + Prep 2pt + Agridex 1pt followed by Defol 7 1.6qt + Gramoxone Inteon 1pt +

Induce 1 pt) exhibited the lower average defoliation percent, 48 percent, and treatment 1 (Kafe 7floz + Ginsatr 6 floz +

Finish 12floz + Agridex 1 pt followed by Defol 7 1.6qt + Gramoxone Inteon 1pt + Induce 1 pt) the higher, 54 percent

(Table 1). Desiccation averaged approximately 26 percent. Treatment 2 (Kafe 7floz + Adios 6floz + Prep 2pt + Agridex

1pt followed by Defol 7 1.6qt + Gramoxone Inteon 1pt + Induce 1 pt) exhibited the lower average dessication percent, 23

percent, and treatment 1 (Kafe 7floz + Ginsatr 6 floz + Finish 12floz + Agridex 1 pt followed by Defol 7 1.6qt +

Gramoxone Inteon 1pt + Induce 1 pt) the higher, 30 percent (Table 2). Open boll averaged approximately 90 percent with

treatment 1 (Kafe 7floz + Ginsatr 6 floz + Finish 12floz + Agridex 1 pt followed by Defol 7 1.6qt + Gramoxone Inteon

1pt + Induce 1 pt) producing the highest at 90 percent (Table 3).

At 21 DAT, all treatments displayed the same defoliation percentages at 73 percent (Table 1). Desiccation

averaged approximately 17 percent. Treatment 2 (Kafe 7floz + Adios 6floz + Prep 2pt + Agridex 1pt followed by Defol 7

1.6qt + Gramoxone Inteon 1pt + Induce 1 pt) exhibited the lower average dessication percent, 14 percent, and treatment 1

(Kafe 7floz + Ginsatr 6 floz + Finish 12floz + Agridex 1 pt followed by Defol 7 1.6qt + Gramoxone Inteon 1pt + Induce 1

pt) the higher, 20 percent (Table 2). Open boll averaged approximately 93 percent with treatment 1 (Kafe 7floz + Ginsatr

6 floz + Finish 12floz + Agridex 1 pt followed by Defol 7 1.6qt + Gramoxone Inteon 1pt + Induce 1 pt) showing the

highest with 94 percent (Table 3).
