INTRODUCTION The first war bulletin contains as complete a list of the students,

faculty, and alumni of the University of Cincinnati who are in the service of their country as can be prepared at this time, March 15, 1918. A great many errors and omissions will be noted by all who read it carefully. The errors are due to the fact that information is extremely hard to obtain, since many officers and men have not yet received permanent assignments to duty, and have not sent us their assignments as made. The omissions are explained by the fact that many of our alumni and students have not informed us of their entry into the armed forces.

The bulletin is issued now in the hope that through the corrections and additions sent in we may be able to compile a reasonably accurate and complete list before the end of the year. To this end, all persons who have any additional information about University of Cincinnati men who are in service, both officers and privates, are urged to send at once a full statement of the facts to the War Council, University of Cincinnati. Men in service, in particular, are requested to send items about themselves and others.

Though very incomplete, especially in the lists of alumni and for­mer students, this bulletin shows that the University is represented in the Army and Navy by the following:

at the University. Estimates based upon the returns from the classes of former students and alumni heard from, lead us to believe that there must be at least 1,000 men of the University with the colors at the present time.

This record and that of the different departments, given below, show that the University of Cincinnati has responded fully to the call of democracy. To this patriotic endeavour there has been no dissent from any member of the institution, but every one has re­sponded heartily and with all his might to the appeal which has placed every department and every man in the institution at the dis­posal of the country. Whatever new calls may be made in the future upon us, we are assured that both the institution and its sons will respond to the limit of their ability.

WAR WORK OF THE UNIVERSITY CENSUS.—Soon after war was declared in April, 1917, a census

was taken of the faculty, alumni, and students of the University in order to ascertain their abilities, training, and capacities for war service. For this purpose cards were sent out, requesting detailed information in regard to education, training, personal attainments, and equipment. Returns were received from 104 members of the faculty, 324 academic and 270 medical alumni, and 726 students. The information thus obtained was analysed, classified, and placed at the disposal of several departments of the Government. The cards were filed for future reference and have been useful in procuring men for many lines of service. At a meeting of the medical alumni residing in this section, a large list of volunteers was made up and sent to the Surgeon General of the Army. Most of these entered the Medical Corps.

MILITARY INSTRUCTION.—A Department of Military Science was established in the University in April, 1917, and all regular students of the Colleges of Liberal Arts and Engineering not physically dis­qualified were given military drill. Although many students enlisted at once in the various training camps, especially in the Officers' Train­ing Camp at Fort Benjamin Harrison, about 400 took this drill dur­ing the spring of 1917; 626 were enrolled in the military department in the fall of 1917, and after further enlistments and the first draft, 432 are still engaged in military practice. All students are receiving instruction in the school of the officer. A unit of the Reserve Officers' Training Corps is about to be established.

WAR COURSES IN THE COLLEGE OP ENGINEERING.—Class instruction in military engineering was organized last spring in the different de­partments of the College of Engineering. The Department of Civil Engineering gives instruction in military topography and map mak­ing; in the construction of spar and ponton bridges; and in the erec­tion of various structures with knots, splicings, and lashings. The Department of Electrical Engineering teaches radio and buzzer work. The Department of Mechanical Engineering instructs in gas engineer­ing as applied to motor transportation and aeroplanes; in the prin­ciples of mechanics involved in aeroplane construction and flight; in the design of special machine elements applicable in guns, gun car­riages, and in machines for their production; in hydraulics, hydraulic machines used in the construction of ordnance, and the analysis of hydraulic recoil ; in buffer mechanisms for guns ; in the construction of charts; and in the principles applicable to the production of shrapnel and ordnanee. Sixty selected students of draft age are enrolled in the Engineer Enlisted Reserve Corps. They are permitted to continue in their studies so as to prepare for war service, upon which they will enter immediately after their graduation.

The Government has authorized that a training camp for mechan­ics and technicians be opened at the University early in April. The necessary shops, laboratories, and other buildings have been placed at its disposal. The old medical college building and the gymnasium are to be used as dormitories. A number of educational institutions and commercial and industrial associations are cooperating with the University.

WAR COURSES IN THE COLLEGE OF LIBERAL ARTS.—The College of

Liberal Arts, through the Departments of Philosophy, Political Science, Economics, History, and Psychology, is conducting, in connection with external classes, a course of lectures dealing with the causes and issues of the war. A course in war gardening is being given by the Department of Botany. The Department of History is giving both day and evening courses in the history of Germany. The Department of Political Science offers a course in the problems of the war.

WAR COURSES IN THE SCHOOL OF HOUSEHOLD ARTS.—Emergency courses in food conservation were given by the School of Household Arts during the summer of 1917, and have been conducted throughout the session 1917-1918. A food conservation campaign has been con­ducted by this school in cooperation with the State Extension Bureau and the Food Administration of the United States Government. A Red Cross Institute for civilian relief is conducted by the University in cooperation with the Home Service Institute. Red Cross edu­cational classes are being held in the Woman's Building, and another Red Cross Institute for civil relief, to be held in the same place, is projected for the summer of 1918.

WAR WORK IN THE COLLEGE OP MEDICINE.—The Cincinnati Base Hospital No. 25 was organized by the medical faculty and the staff of the General Hospital, and the sum of $25,000 was contributed by the people of Cincinnati for its equipment. A station for the examination of candidates for aviation has been maintained by the members of the medical faculty. The entire body of medical students, numbering 102, is enrolled in the Medical Enlisted Reserve Corps.

OTHER ACTIVITIES.—A War Savings Stamp Society was organized immediately upon the announcement of the War Savings campaign, and has been conducted with marked enthusiasm and success.

An Honor Roll of members of the faculty and students of last year and this year who have entered war service, has been compiled and printed. A revised list, containing the names of the alumni in addition, has been issued.

A War Research Committee has been organized at the University, through whose agency research work is being done.

The women of the University faculty and the student body have formed units for the preparation of surgical dressings and the making of hospital garments, etc., and numerous other societies have been organized for the furtherance of various war services.

All the resources of the University have been placed at the disposal of the Government for research and instruction, and several professors who have received commissions are conducting tests and investigations in the laboratories. The Professor of Accountancy and Administra­tion has been commissioned Captain and is chief instructor in a school of the Quartermaster's Department at Jacksonville, Florida.
