CHIE HASHIMOTO, TOKYO, JAPAN

I was able to apply the skills I learned at the University of Hawai‘i towards my daily work as in-house counsel for Gucci Japan. I truly value the friendships I made with fellow LLM students, JD students and professors.

THE MASTER OF LAWS (LLM) PROGRAM

is a one-year program that provides foreign law graduates with a broad understanding of U.S. and international legal issues. Applicants to the LLM Program must hold a foreign law degree (or its equivalent) from a recognized law school outside the U.S. or be admitted to the practice of law in their home jurisdiction.

THE LAW SCHOOLThe William S. Richardson School of Law is located in the beautiful Mānoa valley on the island of O‘ahu. It is the only law school in the State of Hawai‘i, and it maintains close ties with members of the Hawai‘i bar and judiciary. The Law School is known for its excellent programs in business law, environmental law, international and comparative law and human rights. The school is named for William S. Richardson, who served as Chief Justice of the Hawai‘i Supreme Court (1966-1982) and played a key role in the establishment of the Law School.

LAW SCHOOL FACULTYOur faculty members are recognized nationally and internationally for their scholarship, which they combine with extensive real-world experience, both in the state of Hawai‘i and beyond. Committed to teaching as well as to research, they remain exceptionally accessible to students and provide excellent professional training in a friendly, open environment. The Law School has one of the best student-faculty ratios in the U.S. (8-1), which allows us to provide personal attention to all our students.

FLEXIBLE CURRICULUM IN U.S. LAWWe provide our LLM students with excellent training in U.S. legal analysis. All students take Introduction to American Law, a special course that emphasizes the distinctive aspects of the American legal system and approach to legal issues. Beyond that, LLM students have the freedom to design their own curriculum, including first-year courses such as Contracts and Civil Procedure. We also offer an optional U.S. legal writing course designed to train foreign law graduates in American legal research and writing.

LLM SPECIALIZATIONSLLM students who choose to concentrate their studies in one of the Law School’s areas of excellence may earn a separate certificate in addition to their diploma. We now offer specialization certificates in seven major areas: business and commercial law, conflict resolution, criminal law, environmental law, international and comparative law, international human rights law, and ocean law and policy. Depending on their academic focus, students may qualify to earn more than one certificate during their LLM year.

JANUARY TERM ANDJURISTS-IN-RESIDENCEOur January Term (J-Term) Program gives LLM students the bonus of specialized mini-courses taught by some of the world’s leading scholars and professors and judges. Students also benefit from the Jurists-in Residence Program, which brings US Supreme Court justices or prominent international judges to the Law School.

LAW SCHOOL ACTIVITIES

LLM students are fully integrated into all aspects of Law School life and they participate in classes and activities on the same basis as American JD students. We have an active program of seminars, lectures and workshops throughout the academic year, to supplement the curriculum. Student organizations also enthusiastically include the participation of LLM students in their professional and social activities.

BAR EXAM PREPARATION

The Law School offers courses that satisfy the New York State Bar Examination requirements, including Introduction to American Law; Legal Research, Writing and Analysis; and Professional Responsibility, so you can prepare for the NY bar examination while studying in Hawai‘i.

TRANSFER TO THE JD PROGRAM

Several of our LLM students have transferred to our JD Program after earning their LLM degree. LLM graduates who perform exceptionally well in our LLM program may apply to transfer. Some of their credits earned during the LLM Program may be counted towards the JD degree.

THE HAWAI‘I EXPERIENCEHawai‘i is a spectacularly beautiful place in which to work and study. White sandy beaches, lush green mountains and fragrant tropical flowers, all set in an azure-blue ocean, make it a tropical paradise. Hiking, surfing, scuba diving and other sports can all be pursued year-round and within minutes of the Law School. Honolulu, the state capital, is a thriving metropolitan area and a center for business, education and recreation in the Pacific. Hawai‘i also offers the opportunity to live in a multicultural environment rich in the traditions of many peoples; their cultural and artistic traditions are well represented in local art museums and galleries.

THE UNIVERSITYThe University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa is a major research university founded in 1907 and known nationally and internationally for its programs in Asian and Pacific studies, international business, marine biology and astronomy, as well as in law and medicine. Some 20,000 students are enrolled in the University, representing all fifty states and more than seventy countries.
