particle physicists on the Physics Faculty (4 Experimentalists & 1 Theorist). Considerable work in hypernuclear physics (DOE-MEP) & neutrino physics-Daya Bay (DOE-HEP) + new faculty prospects…

• Supported since 1999 by UH TLC2 “seed funding” for ALICE… (Also contributed computing resources for ALICE Data Challenges and EMCal trigger study calculations…)
• (LSP) Served as ALICE-USA Computing Coordinator 2002-2005, and as Distributed Computing Coordinator since. Also a member of LCG (LHC Computing Grid Project - 2004-present) representing ALICE-USA.

Our Contributions to the EMCal Project
• UH will be responsible for the acquisition and fabrication of the LED calibration components and fabrication of wavelength-shifting fiber bundles…
• UH can also offer the support infrastructure to setup an alternate tower assembly site in the event that an accelerated production schedule is feasible.

The UH/TLC2 Connection• TLC2 (The Texas Learning and Computation Center) is
currently providing ~150 CPUs for ALICE Data Challenges. Support has been recognized at LCG as being among the best.
• TLC2 could offer even more resources as a match to supplement support to fund ~1.5% of ALICE total computing needs (see Soltz computing presentation)…
• In addition, such hardware support would also be matched with 2.0 flexible FTE in support personnel (Middleware software development, sys-admin and maintenance)

UH group’s Physics Interests(“Fundamental”)
• Properties of the QGP– qR (Q2)– …and ultimately the Equation of State.
• Relation to the Big Bang early evolution and the current Large Scale Structure of the visible Universe. (This can lead to collaborations with local cosmologists…) – This is most sensitive to the nature of the QGP/Baryon phase
transition, but this also needs an accurate QGP EOS…
• The “Matter” Problem: How did we get the current matter distribution?– Needs a fairly precise knowledge of the QGP EOS…
