Astronaut Scholarship

For “outstanding students who exhibit motivation,imagination, and exceptional performance in the fields ofengineering, mathematics, and natural or applied sciences.

Boren ScholarshipBoren Fellowships, an initiative of the National SecurityEducation Program, provide unique funding opportunities forU.S. graduate students to study less commonly taughtlanguages in world regions critical to U.S. interests, andunderrepresented in study abroad. Also funds studies forgraduate students.

Award: Up to $24,000 for overseas study for 3 months to ayear and summer programs for STEM students.

Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship

The Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in

Education Foundation was established by Congress in 1986

to serve as a living memorial to honor the lifetime work of

Senator Barry Goldwater, who served his country for 56

years as a soldier and statesman, including 30 years in the

U.S. Senate.

Award: $7,500 for up to two years

Eligibility:

• US citizen or permanent resident

• Sophomore or Junior in STEM field

• Extensive research experience

• High GPA (3.8 or higher)

Harry S. Truman Scholarship

The Truman foundation awards 60-65 scholarships annuallyto juniors interested in careers in public service and with thepotential to be “change agents.”

Award: $30,000 in support for graduate study and theopportunity to participate in a Truman Scholars LeadershipWeek and a Summer Institute in Washington, DC.

Udall Scholarship

The Udall scholarship honors the legacies of Morris Udall andStewart Udall, whose careers had a significant impact on NativeAmerican self-governance, health care, and the stewardship ofpublic lands and natural resources. Scholarships are awarded inthree categories:

The Environment: U.S.-Citizen students of any ethnicity with acommitment to the environment and a good academic backgroundare eligible for the scholarships in the environmental category.

Tribal Public Policy: Native American or Alaskan Native studentswho plan careers related to Tribal Public Policy.

Native Health Care: Native American or Alaskan Native studentswho plan careers related to Native Health Care.

Award: $7,000 for undergraduate study to sophomores or juniorsand participation in a Udall Scholarship Orientation in Tucson,Arizona.

Critical Language Scholarship

The Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program is an intensive overseaslanguage and cultural immersion program for American students enrolledat U.S. colleges and universities. The program includes intensive languageinstruction and structured cultural enrichment experiences designed topromote rapid language gains.

Award: International and domestic travel, visa fees, language instruction,room & board, program-sponsored travel.

Eligible Languages: Azerbaijani, Bangla, Hindi, Indonesian, Korean, Punjabi,Swahili, Turkish, and Urdu (Beginning to advanced levels); Arabic andPersian (advanced beginning to advanced levels); Chinese, Japanese, andRussian (intermediate and advanced levels)

Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship

The U.S. Department of State’s Benjamin A. Gilman InternationalScholarship is a grant program that enables students of limitedfinancial means to study or intern abroad, thereby gaining skillscritical to our national security and economic prosperity.

Award: Up to $5,000

Eligibility:• US Citizen or US National• Must be receiving a Federal Pell Grant at the time of

application• For summer (21+ days), semester, or academic-year long study

Rhodes Scholarship

“Rhodes Scholars are chosen not only for their outstandingscholarly achievements, but for their character,commitment to others and to the common good, and fortheir potential for leadership in whatever domains theircareers may lead.”

Marshall Scholarship

Marshall Scholars strengthen the enduring relationship betweenthe British and American peoples, their governments and theirinstitutions. Selection criteria include an exceptional academicrecord, leadership, and potential to serve as a citizen ambassadorto the UK.

Award: One to two years of study in any field at any university inthe United Kingdom

Mitchell Scholarship

The George J. Mitchell Scholarship Program, named to honorformer US Senator George Mitchell's pivotal contribution to theNorthern Ireland peace process, is designed to introduce andconnect generations of future American leaders to the island ofIreland, while recognizing and fostering intellectual achievement,leadership, and a commitment to community and public service.

Award: One year of postgraduate study in any discipline offeredby institutions of higher learning in Ireland.

Churchill Scholarship

The Churchill Scholarship provides funding to Americanstudents for a year of Master’s study in science,mathematics, and engineering at the University ofCambridge, based at Churchill College.

Fulbright Scholarship

The Fulbright U.S. Student Program provides grants for individuallydesigned study/research projects or for English Teaching AssistantPrograms. A candidate will submit a Statement of Grant Purposedefining activities to take place during one academic year in aparticipating country outside the U.S.

Award: Round-trip travel, maintenance, a research allowance andtuition waiver, if applicable. Most grants are for one academicyear of study or research.

Knight-Hennessy Scholarship

The Knight-Hennessy Scholars program will annually identify a groupof up to 100 high-achieving students from around the world withdemonstrated leadership and civic commitment to receive full fundingto pursue a wide-ranging graduate education at Stanford, with thegoal of developing a new generation of global leaders.

Award: Full funding for any graduate degree at Stanford, stipend, andconsistent leadership development and mentorship.

Eligibility:• Applying during final year of study for bachelor’s degree or within

four years of earning first bachelor’s degree.• Acceptance into Stanford graduate program (apply at same time)

Schwarzman Scholarship

Schwarzman Scholars is a highly selective, one-yearmaster’s program at Tsinghua University in Beijing that isdesigned to prepare the next generation of global leadersfor the challenges of the future.

Award: One year master’s degree in Global Affairs with afocus in Public Policy, Economics and Business, orInternational Relations at Tsinghua University in Beijing,China including housing and living stipend.

CEIP Gaither Junior Fellows Program

Each year, through the James C. Gaither Junior Fellowsprogram, the Carnegie Endowment for International Peaceoffers approximately 12-14 one-year fellowships to uniquelyqualified graduating seniors and individuals who havegraduated during the past academic year.

Award: ~$40,000 for one year with full benefits

The Gates Cambridge Scholarship was established by adonation from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to theUniversity of Cambridge to select a global cohort whodemonstrate outstanding intellectual ability, leadershippotential, a commitment to improving the lives of others, and agood fit with the program that they apply to at Cambridge.

Soros Fellowship for New Americans

The Paul & Daisy Soros Fellowships for New Americans is a $90,000merit-based fellowship exclusively for immigrants and children ofimmigrants who are pursuing graduate school in the United States.The program draws nearly 1,800 applications annually for just 30fellowships

Award: Up to $90,000 for graduate program/living expenses

Ford Foundation Predoc Awards

The Ford Foundation seeks to increase the diversity of the nation’scollege and university faculties by increasing their ethnic and racialdiversity, to maximize the educational benefits of diversity, and toincrease the number of professors who can and will use diversity as aresource for enriching the education of all students.

Award: $24,000 annual stipend for three years

Hertz Fellowship

Since 1963, the Fannie and John Hertz Foundation has awarded over1,100 doctoral fellowships with the goal of supporting the early stageresearch endeavors of applied physical, biological, and engineeringscience students who possess the potential to change our world forthe better by solving difficult, real-world problems.

Award: $32,000 per year, renewable for up to 5 years of graduateschool

Eligibility:• Students of the applied physical and biological sciences,

mathematics, and engineering who are citizens or permanentresidents of the US, and willing to morally commit to make theirskills available to the US in time of national emergency.

• Exceptional intelligence and creativity, technical education,orientation and commitment to the applications of the physicalsciences, accomplishment in technical or related professionalstudies, appropriate moral and ethical values.

National Science Foundation - GRFP

The NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program recognizes andsupports outstanding graduate students in NSF-supportedscience, technology, engineering, and mathematics disciplineswho are pursuing research-based Master's and doctoraldegrees at accredited United States institutions.

The goal of the program is to prepare students from diversebackgrounds -- including underrepresented racial and ethnicminorities and students from families with lower socio-economic status -- for graduate study and careers in publicpolicy.

Humanity in Action Fellowship

The objective of the Humanity in Action Fellowshipprograms is to facilitate a collective exploration of thesocial and political roots of discrimination, as well as toprovide a forum where potential solutions to some oftoday's most challenging issues can be considered anddiscussed.

A number of universities throughout the US (andsometimes abroad!) provide summer experiences withhousing and a stipend for students to gain researchexperience at a new institution. These experiences aretypically for students in STEM disciplines.

Award: Housing and stipend for research at one of 10 differentinstitutions including Harvard, MIT, and the NIH. Includes travel toa summer conference at UCLA.

Kansas Idea Network of Biomedical Research Excellence

K-INBRE is a project funded by the National Institutes of Healththat includes nine academic institutions in Kansas, including theUniversity of Kansas. One of the goals of the K-INBRE program is toidentify and recruit promising undergraduate science students intocareers in biomedical research in Kansas.

Initiative for Maximizing Student Development

The IMSD program provides support for undergraduate studentsat KU who are interested in pursuing a career in biomedicalresearch. Its purpose is to achieve greater participation fromstudents from underrepresented groups in the biomedical andbehavioral research enterprise of this country.

Award: Financial support, extensive mentored research experiencewith a KU faculty mentor, academic counseling,presentation/professional development opportunities, and more.

Eligibility:• GPA 2.5 or above• Underrepresented in science, as defined by the NIH

Beckman Scholars

The purpose of the Beckman Scholars Program is to provide exceptionallytalented, full-time undergraduate students with a meaningfulundergraduate research opportunity, while funding the scholars during theiraward term in order to preclude the need to seek additional employment.Eligible research departments are Chemistry and Molecular Biosciences.

Award: $21,000 for students with $5,000 for their mentor

Eligibility:• Pursuing a BS in specific STEM fields• US Citizen/Permanent Resident• Sophomore standing or 2 years until BS completion• GPA 3.7 or above• Plans to pursue a PhD or similar advanced science degree• Commitment to work full-time for two summers and part-time for one

academic year

Multicultural Scholars Program

The mission of the MSP is to recruit undergraduate studentsfrom under-represented backgrounds into various academicmajors as a means of increasing the diversity of the studentbody at the University of Kansas and to provide supports andopportunities that will assist them in their academic successand career planning.

Award: $1,000 per semester renewable scholarship andpossible study abroad funding as well as individualizedmentoring

Eligibility:• Undergraduates who represent underrepresented groups at

KU (ethnic, first-generation, low-income)

Hall Center Scholars

The Hall Center Scholars program provides opportunities for KUundergraduates who have strong academic credentials and havedemonstrated significant activity within KU, to interact with thewell-known authors, scholars, and public intellectuals who speakin our Humanities Lecture Series.

Award: $500 award and exclusive invitations to HumanitiesLectures Series events including special receptions, lunches, andbook discussion groups

Eligibility:• KU undergraduate with strong academic credentials and a track

record of engagement within the university community• Intending to enroll in coursework for both Fall and Spring

semesters on campus the year of award

Deadline: March 12, 2018
