The University of Kent Succeed Programme is a year-long programme designed to help young people in Kent and Medway explore the opportunities and challenges offered by higher education in a safe, inclusive environment with the support of friendly and knowledgeable university staff and student ambassadors. The programme combines information, exploration and experience to give you a broad view of university and will encourage you to decide whether it is the right path for you. The Succeed Programme will also help you to grow in confidence by exploring your personal strengths and developing communication skill that will allow you to make confident and informed decisions about your future. Our aim is to help you succeed in your sixth form studies and Level 3 qualifications whatever you decide to do when you leave school. How can I apply? We encourage any Year 12 students who are interested to apply, however, should the programme be oversubscribed, priority will be given to students who meet at least one of the following criteria: You have achieved 5 GCSEs 9-4 including English and Maths Your parent(s)/guardian(s) did not attend university You live in local authority care, or you have lived in care.You live in an area deemed to have lower than expected participation rates in higher education as determined by the National Collaborative Outreach Programme (NCOP). To apply for a place on the programme please complete the attached application form and return it to the University of Kent by Monday 26 November.

THE PROGRAMME

Benefits:• There is no cost to take part in the programme, food, travel and accommodation costs will be covered by the university• All participants will receive a free membership to the University of Kent library for the year• Upon completing the programme, you will receive a certificate of participation.

You will also be able to:• Speak to graduates and employers about the benefits of Higher Education• Visit different universities as part of the programme• Meet with current university students to learn more about student life• Find out about all aspects of university including, finance, wellbeing, studies and more.

Launch Day – 19 January 2019 Meet the other participants, programme staff and student ambassadors. Get familiar with the university campus, receive your library membership andlearn how to use the resources. This day also provides an opportunity for your parents to visit the university, learn about the programme and ask anyquestions they have about higher education.

Personal Foundations – 16 February 2019 Begin to explore your sense of self. Answer questions such as Who am I? What are my options? As well as starting to set goals for yourself in a safenon-judgmental environment.

Why University? – 16 March 2019 Explore the many different reasons why people choose to go to university. Hear from global businesses and postgraduate students on the differentpaths higher education can open up. Discover more about the extra-curricular opportunities offered by universities.

University Study – 13 April 2019 Start to consider subject options and think about what you want to do. Try out subject taster sessions in a university setting and learn about thedifference between school and university teaching. Find out what choices might suit your passions and strengths.

Student Experience Residential – 24-27 July 2019 Experience what student life is like outside of studying! Try out student societies and sports clubs, learn about student finance and have the chanceto see what living away from home might be like. Reflect on the programme as a whole and tell us about how we can support you moving forward.

Optional Extra: Applying for University – 7 September 2019 If, at the end of the programme, you decide university is right for you and you want to apply then we will offer support in doing so. Come back for anadditional day and get support with the UCAS application process.

Data ProtectionWhat is KaMCOP and what organisations are part of it? KaMCOP is a partnership between the University of Kent, Canterbury Christ Church University, the University for the Creative Arts, KentCounty Council, University of Greenwich, 3 colleges and 50 schools in Kent and Medway. Collaboratively, KaMCOP works to raise theaspirations and attainment of young people who might not otherwise consider progression to higher education. What is going to happen to the information you hold about me? Personal data is collected in order to process your application to the Succeed programme and used for anonymised reporting.Personal information is only collected and or/processed in accordance with current data protection legislation. Your data will be storedon the Higher Education Access Tracker (HEAT) database, which is held on secure computer systems. These systems are subjectto stringent physical and electronic access control mechanisms. We are required by law to always have a permitted reason or justification (called a “lawful basis”) for processing your personal data.We collect your data for three main reasons under the legal basis of Public Task:• For the purpose of monitoring, which allows us to fulfil compulsory external reporting requirements to regulatory bodies such asthe Office for Students, as well as giving us a clear picture of the activities we deliver and people we work with.

• For the purpose of evaluation, which helps us assess the effectiveness of different initiatives on widening participation to HE.This includes long-term tracking of participants’ education journeys, which lets us see how many of the students who participatein our activities go on to university.

• For the purpose of contextualised admissions where we want to improve inclusivity, the consortium may use this data to inform andsupport its decision making process.

How long will my data be retained for?Your data will be retained for a long period, usually between 15 and 20 years. We do this to track and evaluate participation in activitiesand progression to Higher Education. Whenever the research findings are published, all information will be anonymised. You have theright to opt out at any time from having your data being processed during this time. Will other institutions be able to access my data? Yes. CFE research is leading on the research on behalf of the Office for Students. Your data may also be shared with the Office forStudents, Higher Education Statistics Agency, or the University and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS). It will also be shared withpartners including colleges, Higher Education Access Tracker service subscribers and the National Data Service. We share your datato help evaluate the effectiveness of this activity. This is part of the government policy to widen participation in higher education andto develop future policy. The project and its partners will not use your record in a way that would affect you individually. We will notrelease data to anyone who is unauthorised.
