Are you considering post-graduatestudy options and opportunities inFilm Studies, Drama and Theatre,Media Arts or History of Art? TheSchool of Arts has a top ten rankingin three of these subject areas and has been recognised for itsresearch and teaching excellence.This one week, intensive summerschool will provide a subjectintroduction to a range of visual,filmic and performance media,associated theories and debateswhich you might expect toencounter at graduate level. It willalso provide an opportunity to

discuss some of your subject andresearch interests and aspirationswith the academics who teach onthese programmes and to sharesome of their research specialisms.Educational study visits to galleries,museums and theatres in Kent andLondon will also form part of yourunique learning experience. Therewill also be an opportunity for one to one support and feedback onauthoring personal statements andguidance on devising research-based applications for graduate-level study.

Our School of Arts has aninternational reputation for itsteaching and research, and offerstop-level arts teaching and researchfacilities. Ranked 3rd for Film and6th for History of Art in the Guardian

European Security and ForeignPolicy

This course focuses oncontemporary security issues facingEurope today and on how Europeanstates are adapting to their new rolein providing security both within andbeyond their territory. The course isdesigned to give you a thoroughoverview of contemporary securityissues and how they are addressedby European, and internationalsecurity, institutions. The course willprovide a conceptual overview ofthe most important topics and willdiscuss specific case studies toillustrate concepts and explore key themes.

You will examine the institutions of EU foreign and security policy;the future of the transatlanticrelationship and of NATO; inter-institutional cooperation betweenthe EU and the UN and otherinternational actors in pursuit of‘effective multilateralism’; regional

challenges such as integrating theBalkans and solving the ‘frozenconflicts’ as well as Europeanengagement farther afield such as Afghanistan and sub-SaharanAfrica; and European responsestowards the rise of emergingpowers and their effect on globalgovernance.

Medieval Canterbury and Kent:Crown, Church, Communities and Culture

Medieval Canterbury and Kent arejustly famous for having owned a1215 copy of Magna Carta, forbeing the site of St Thomas Becket’sinternationally important shrine andfor inspiring Geoffrey Chaucer’smasterpiece The Canterbury Tales.Moreover, the county’s locationbetween London and the Channelports and France meant that itsroads were traversed by merchants,ambassadors and pilgrims, but alsosoldiers who were engaged in suchconflicts as the Hundred Years Warand the Wars of the Roses. Thismeant that Canterbury and otherKentish towns and cities were a hive

of commercial activity but also amelting pot of ideas and people.

Through the lens of Canterbury andKent, and using the four themes ofCrown, Church, Communities andCulture, you will examine wide-ranging aspects of medieval societyand get to explore first-hand thesehistorically important locations.

The course comprises guided visits to World Heritage Sites, andworkshops, seminars and lecturesto analyse how people lived,worked, worshipped, played anddied in the Middle Ages. You willalso have the opportunity to handledocuments and artefacts, some of which are over 1000 years old.

In addition to superb teaching, youwill benefit from the experience ofliving and studying in the historicallysignificant city of Canterbury andcounty of Kent.

Wartime in the Garden ofEngland: Canterbury, Kent and the two World Wars

The English county of Kent isperhaps most famous for the historicCathedral City of Canterbury, andmore tranquil pastimes such as thegrowing of fruit and hops. Twice inthe twentieth century, however, thisrural region found itself on thefrontline of devastating globalconflicts.

This fascinating course traces thedramatic story of Canterbury andKent’s experiences throughout thetwo world wars. You will be able todevelop your research skills in localarchives and visit important heritagesites, including CanterburyCathedral and Dover Castle. You will consider subjects including:experience of air raids; invasion

fears; the Dunkirk evacuation; theBattle of Britain; remembrance and memorialisation, and criticallyevaluate the impact of the wars onculture, memory, and notions oflocal (and national) identity.

Investigating the Social Mind

Research indicates thatinterpersonal relationships andgroup-based interactions arestrongly affected by how peopleunderstand and react to the world

which surrounds them. During thiscourse you will investigate recentresearch into psychology relating to the ‘social mind’ and how thisinfluences people’s thoughts andbehaviours. You will gain key insightinto important aspects of the human psyche and develop anunderstanding of the key factorsthat influence the way we live andwork with other people.

Ranked 5th in the UK for graduateemployment prospects (CompleteUniversity Guide 2016) and 11th for research intensity (ResearchExcellence Framework), Kent is one of the best places to studyPsychology. Biotechnology: Advanced labskills

Kent’s School of Biosciences is one of the UK’s premier centres of learning and discovery and an excellent place to study thebiological sciences. UK locationsOur Canterbury campus is located in the county of Kent. Affectionatelynamed the ‘Garden of England’, the county boasts over 1,000 milesof countryside and 200 miles ofunspoilt coastline. Situated in theSouth East corner of England, it isalso the perfect location from whichto explore mainland Europe.Departing from the ‘White Cliffs ofDover’, France can be reached in 30minutes and Paris and Brussels areaccessible in just under two hours.

CanterburyCanterbury is a beautiful and vibrantstudent city less than an hour fromLondon. Virginia Woolf famouslywrote “there is no lovelier place in theworld than Canterbury”, and eachyear many students from around the world fall in love with the city’sdiverse and cosmopolitan charm.

As you’d expect from a city withnearly 30,000 students, there’s a

rich social life. According to a reportfrom travel company Experian,Canterbury is the UK’s third mostvibrant city. The city boasts manyclubs, bars, restaurants and pubsas well as cinemas and sportsfacilities. Canterbury’s MarloweTheatre attracts many of the UK’sbiggest and best touring shows and performances.

Set in 300 acres of green parklandoverlooking the World Heritage Siteof Canterbury Cathedral, ourCanterbury campus is a friendly and vibrant environment with anexcellent location. Within walkingdistance of the city, the campusoffers green and tranquil openspaces, first-class resources and a cosmopolitan atmosphere. Theexcellent social facilities include arange of restaurants and bars,cinema, theatre, music performancevenue and nightclub.

The campus is also a short trip awayfrom the beautiful seaside towns ofWhitstable, Herne Bay, Broadstairsand Margate, which offer a range of seafood eateries, boutique shops and cultural festivals. Margate is also home to the TurnerContemporary, an elegant landmarkgallery and the largest exhibitionspace in the South East outside ofLondon.

Dates Each summer school, with theexception of Exploring VisualCultures, is offered as a two-weekcourse, though you can combinemultiple courses to create a longerprogramme of study (subject toavailability). Tiered discounts areavailable if you book multipleprogrammes (see page 15).

AccommodationCanterburyIf you choose to study on ourCanterbury programmes, you will beoffered on-campus, self-cateredaccommodation in Park Wood, ourpurpose-built student village. Theseterraced houses comprise five or six single bedrooms with sharedkitchen and bathroom facilities.Shopping and laundry facilities are close at hand and all

VUB’s U-Residence is just a coupleof minutes’ walk from the Universityof Kent Brussels centre,conveniently located near to cafes,shops and the European Parliamentand with excellent transport linksinto the city centre.
