ARTS ADMINISTRATION PROGRAM

WHY UK Arts Administration? The demand for arts administrators remains strong. What was once a small niche has transformed into an industry of professionals trained to manage theatres, symphony halls, galleries, museums, community art councils, orchestras, art centers, and many other types of institutions. In fact, the nonprofit arts industry employs about 1.3 million people annually.

The University of Kentucky’s Arts Administration program offers one of the most comprehensive curriculums in the country. The program is designed to teach students the concepts, technologies, and skills necessary to successfully direct an arts organization in a competitive and changing environment. The program advocates a devotion to the arts, an interest in community development and integration, a focus on contemporary and relevant arts trends, and the belief that students can create a positive change by taking skills and knowledge out of the classroom and into the world.

BEYOND THE CLASSROOMHands-on experiences are a critical element of an education in Arts Administration. Students majoring in Arts Administration at the University of Kentucky are required to complete both a practicum and internship.

Under the supervision of a university faculty or staff member, students will complete a one-credit hour practicum of service work. In addition to helping students gain experience, practicums encourage the practice of serving the community, a primary goal of arts organizations.

Arts Administration students must also complete at least six credit hours of internship to graduate. Students in the Arts Administration Program have worked with local arts organizations, state companies and even nationally-known organizations.

These InTernshIps help sTudenTs:· Explore arts administration areas in which they may want to work once they

graduate;

· Earn relevant arts administration work experience;

· Build professional contacts in the field; and

· Understand the work-place demands faced by arts administrators.

eduCATIOn ABrOAdThe Arts Administration Program encourages its students to experience education abroad. Through exchange agreements with universities in Germany and Finland, three UK arts administration students are able to explore the world of international cultural management. Additionally, through UK’s Education Abroad office, many students have also studied in countries such as Australia, France, Italy, Ireland, Scotland and Spain. Faculty members of the Arts Administration Program have also organized month-long trips to England, where students have studied theatre and museum management.
