“SMART URBANISM”TEACHING SUSTAINABILITY

INTRODUCTIONThird scientific conference PAMETNI URBANIZEM “SMART URBANISM” 2014 explores the theme “Teaching for sustainable architecture and urbanism.”

The starting position has been already well defined in the UNESCO programme TEACHING AND LEARNING FOR A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE which has been established for the United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development in the year 2002 and is a major contribution to the United Nations World Sum-mit on Sustainable Development (Johannesburg, September 2002). “…The programme can be used as it is, or adapted to local, national or regional needs. It provides professional development for student teachers, teachers, curriculum developers, education policy makers, and authors of educational materials. The mod-ules are divided into 4 themes: Curriculum rationale, Sustainable Development across the curriculum, Con-temporary issues and Teaching & learning strategies.”

In the frame of improving architectural and urban studies the fourth theme “TEACHING AND LEARNING STRATEGIES is especially important. So we have decided to use some starting points from the UNESCO pro-gramme to engage this year discussion which should be directed towards questions and answers how to implement general guidelines on the field of urban and architectural education.

The TEACHING & LEARNING STRATEGIES develops professional skills for using teaching and learning strate-gies that can help students achieve the wide range of knowledge, skill and values objectives of Education for Sustainable Development. The UNESCO programme defines eight important strategies: experiential learning, storytelling, values education, enquiry learning, appropriate assessment, future problem solving, learning outside the classroom and community problem solving.

1_EXPERIENTIAL LEARNINGAt the heart of all learning is the way we process our experiences, especially our critical reflections on our experiences. This module introduces experiential education as a key approach to student-centred learning for a sustainable future.Experiential learning engages students in critical thinking, problem solving and decision making in contexts that are personally relevant to them. This approach to learning also involves making opportunities for debriefing and consolida-tion of ideas and skills through feedback, reflection, and the application of the ideas and skills to new situations.Objectives:_To appreciate the value of student-centred experiential learning;_To analyse the elements of experiential learning;_To develop guidelines for teaching through experiential approaches; and_To relate experiential learning to education for sustainable futures.

2_STORYTELLINGEveryone loves a good story – especially the young people we teach. In fact, being able to tell a story in an interesting and compelling way is an important teaching skill. This is because a good story is not only entertaining but is capable of holding student attention while they learn important concepts, attitudes and skills.Objectives:_To develop an appreciation of stories as educational resources, especially as sources of teaching themes that support Education for Sustainable Developments;_To develop skills in locating and telling stories as part of a teaching programme; and_To develop strategies for integrating storytelling approaches into teaching units to achieve the objectives of Education for Sus-tainable Development.

3_VALUES EDUCATIONThe values and attitudes we live by affect how we relate to other people and to all our activities in the environment, and so are a major influence on our prospects for achieving a sustainable future.Although they cannot be separated from cognitive understanding, values and attitudes relate to the affective (or emo-tional) dimension of human behaviour. While values and attitudes are similar in this regard, they differ in several im-portant ways.Values are generally long-term standards or principles that are used to judge the worth of an idea or action. They pro-vide the criteria by which we decide whether something is good or bad, right or wrong.Attitudes predispose us to respond in particular ways to people and events. They are not so deeply felt as values and quite often change as a result of experience.Objectives:_To develop an understanding of values education strategies;_To consider the relation between values and personal behaviour affecting the achievement of sustainable futures;_To reflect on your futures awareness, commitment and actions; and_To develop skills for using values clarification and values analysis in teaching.

4_ENQUIRY LEARNINGEnquiry learning is a learner-centred approach that emphasises higher order thinking skills. It may take several forms, including analysis, problem solving, discovery and creative activities, both in the classroom and the community. Most importantly, in enquiry learning students are responsible for processing the data they are working with in order to reach their own conclusions.Objectives:_To develop an understanding of enquiry-based teaching and learning strategies;_To develop skills in planning for enquiry-based learning; and_To illustrate ways of evaluating enquiry-based teaching and learning.

5_APPROPRIATE ASSESSMENTPerhaps the most noticeable change is the focus on relating learning with the measurement and reporting of what stu-dents have achieved. This relationship helps make assessment an integral part of students’ day-to-day schooling rather than a series of end-of-course tests.This goal is especially important in Education for Sustainable Development because of the wide range of objectives concerned with knowledge, skills, values/attitudes, and action.This module develops ways of assessing student learning that are appropriate to Education for Sustainable Develop-ment.Objectives:_To develop a sense of direction and innovation in the assessment of learning in Education for Sustainable Development;_To analyse key assessment issues and make decisions that will integrate assessment with effective teaching and learning; and_To develop skills for using appropriate ways of assessing the knowledge, skill and values objectives of Education for Sustainable Development.

6_FUTURE PROBLEM SOLVINGFuture Problem Solving is a strategy for helping students develop skills for analysing a problem. Working through a six step process can help them decide – from a futures perspective – what should be done about a problem. The six steps are:_Identifying possible causes and effects of a problem_Identifying the underlying problem_Brainstorming potential solutions_Developing criteria for evaluating solutions_Evaluating all solutions to determine the best one_Developing an action planAs well as developing problem solving skills, this teaching strategy also helps students to develop an interest in the future and improve their research, group work and communication skills.Objectives:_To appreciate the importance of integrating a futures perspective_To develop expertise in using Future Problem Solving as a teaching strategy_To plan ways of using the Future Problem Solving strategy when teaching other topics.

7_LEARNING OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOMThis module provides examples of ways that learning outside the classroom can be used to facilitate Education for Sus-tainable Development. This includes short visits into the school grounds and local community, as well as visits to farms, factories, offices, neighbourhood science centres and natural settings such as a forest, a beach or a national park.Providing students with high quality learning activities in relevant situations beyond the walls of the classroom is vital for helping students appreciate their first hand experiences from a variety of different perspectives. Experiences out-side the classroom also enhances learning by providing students with opportunities to practice skills of enquiry, values analysis and clarification and problem solving in everyday situations.However, taking students outside the classroom requires careful planning of the learning activities and attention to the health and safety risks that might be faced. This module provides guidance on these aspects of planning for learning outside the classroom.Objectives:_To develop an awareness of the positive impact that experiences outside the classroom can have on Education for Sustainable Development;_To develop an understanding of the planning, organisation and risk management required for teaching and learning outside the classroom; and_To identify appropriate strategies for teaching and learning outside the classroom.

8_COMMUNITY PROBLEM SOLVINGThis module introduces Community Problem Solving as a teaching and learning strategy. Community Problem Solving provides students with an opportunity to practice the skills that are needed to participate in finding solutions to the local issues that concern them. This helps to develop the important citizenship objectives of learning for a sustainable future and integrates skills – for both students and teachers – of using experiential and enquiry-based strategies. It also integrates skills in the planning of values clarification and values analysis with the possible solutions so students can take action to help achieve a sustainable future.Objectives:_To develop an understanding of Community Problem Solving, especially as it may be used in education for sustainable futures._To identify the skills students need to participate in Community Problem Solving._To explore questions and issues that may be encountered when teaching through Community Problem Solving._To identify teaching and learning strategies that may be used as part of a Community Problem Solving project.

Teaching and Learning for a Sustainable Future should enable teachers to plan learning experiences that empower their students to develop and evaluate alternative visions of a sustainable future and to work crea-tively with others to help bring their visions of a better world into effect. It should also enhance the computer literacy of teachers and build their skills in using multimedia-based resources and strategies in their teaching.
