The University of Miami’s annual United Way Campaign is one of the ways in which we demonstrate our deep commitment to the Miami-Dade community. Service to our community is a central part of our mission, and our partnership with the United Way is an opportunity for our faculty, staff, and students to get involved.

Our 2013 campaign was exciting, fun, innovative, and productive. With more than 4,500 faculty and staff generously contributing, we raised over $1 million. Our contributions will further the efforts of many community agencies as they impact lives through programs focused on improving education, financial stability, and health.

As the 2013 United Way Campaign Chair, I extend my appreciation and thanks to every member of the UM team who participated in a fundraising event, made a payroll deduction pledge, or made a one-time gift. Every contribution makes a difference. Our campaign is a team effort, and the success is also due to the dedication and commitment of a host of school-, college- and department-based Ambassadors who planned events and encouraged participation among their colleagues. Thank you to all of the Ambassadors and department leaders who supported our campaign.

The United Way of Miami-Dade established the Tocqueville Society in 1991 to honor those individuals who demonstrated an extraordinary sense of philanthropy with remarkably high levels of giving. The Tocqueville Society was named in celebration of the vision of French historian Alexis de Tocqueville, who was recognized as a symbol of the true spirit of volunteerism that lives in the hearts of all Americans.
