Chemistry NEWSLETTER University of Michigan D EPARTMENT OF 1998 U-M DEPARTMENT OF CHEMISTRY Letter from the Chair Greetings from Ann Arbor and the Department of Chemistry. After one full year as Department Chair, I have come to realize the full scope of this administra- tive challenge. It’s been a very busy and exciting year as we forge ahead to meet the goals and implement the plans set out in our new 5-year plan. One of the most ambitious parts of our plan is the recruitment of new faculty at the senior and junior levels. During the past year, Professor William Roush settled in the Department as the first Warner Lambert/Parke Davis Professor of Chemistry. Bill has assembled a super research group of graduate students and postdoctorals. We were successful this year in recruiting Professor Edwin Vedejs from the University of Wisconsin. Ed will join the faculty next January as the Moses Gomberg Professor of Chemistry. Some of his research group will start arriving at Michigan by August of 1998. Ed is a very distinguished organic chem- ist whose research spans both mechanis- tic and synthetic chemistry. He is a long time consultant for Pharmacia Upjohn Pharmaceutical Co. and is currently an Associate Editor of the Journal of the American Chemical Society. We were fortunate in recruiting Professor Carol Fierke from the Department of Biochem- istry at the Duke Medical School. She will arrive at Michigan some time next summer. Carol is a biochemist with a strong physical organic background, and someone who will be a significant addi- tion to our biochemistry undergraduate program and our graduate program in chemical biology. In addition to these two outstanding senior hires, we welcome Dr. Larry Beck from Cal Tech as the Dow CorningAssistant Professor of analytical chemistry in September. Larry brings a broad spectrum of research expertise in solid state NMR, zeolites and nanostructures. Faculty recruiting will continue at a vigorous pace in the coming year with no less than four searches in the area of theoretical physical chemistry, organic and chemical biology and inor- ganic/materials chemistry. The College and the University both have been sup- portive and have facilitated the recruit- ment of outstanding faculty. Unfortunately, we are losing one of our greatest supporters in the administration. In April, Edie Goldenberg announced her resignation as Dean of LS&A effective this August. In October, she will become Provost at the University of Texas, Aus- tin. We all express our gratitude for her efforts to build a stronger Chemistry De- partment and wish her well in her new post. During the coming year, Professor Pat Gurin of the Psychology Department will serve as interim Dean while a na- tional search is undertaken for a perma- nent Dean. Other news in the Department includes the promotion of Dr. Richard Goldstein to Associate Professor with tenure. Richard is also an Associate Research Scientist in the Division of Biophysics. Professor James Penner-Hahn finishes his term as Associate Chair for Curriculum Develop- ment and Faculty Affairs. The Depart- ment is grateful for the outstanding job that Jim has done. He will be replaced by Professor Masato Koreeda. Professor Mark Meyerhoff will continue as Associ- ate Chair for Graduate Student Affairs for another year after which he will take a well deserved sabbatical leave. We have had another excellent year for recruiting graduate students. In the fall, 45 new Ph.D. students will join the De- partment. This summer has also been a very productive one for undergraduate research participation with a total of 20 undergraduates doing research in various laboratories. We were fortunate to re- ceive several significant gifts for under- graduate support this year which we have directed to summer fellowships including gifts from the Dreyfus Foundation, from PPG Co. and the Pfizer Pharmaceutical Co. Special gifts were also received from Helen Schaefer and from Marion Harris to supplement named endowments for undergraduate scholarship support. Lou Centofanti and Bob and Marj Parry added special gifts to the Robert W. Parry fund, and Jerry Robertson similarly strength- ened the P. A. S. Smith fund. These two endowments and a new corporate gift from Pharmacia & Upjohn in Kalamazoo are directed to graduate support. Charles and Genevieve Walton also initiated an endowment fund for the support of mate- rials research. I would like to acknowledge and thank the alumni, alumnae and friends of the Department for their generous gifts dur- ing the past year. It is gratifying to see so many special gifts to named fellowships, lectures and to our Alumni/ae Fund. This

Spotlight Profileson Faculty,GraduateStudents, andUndergraduates

As a new addition to the newsletter, wewill highlight one faculty member, onegraduate student and one undergraduatestudent to let you know of their specialaccomplishments in the past year.

Faculty MemberProfessor William Roush joined the fac-ulty here at Michigan this past year. Hejumped right into the fray of combining

research, mentoring graduate students, and serving on committees while inte-grating himself and his family into a newcommunity.During the past year, Professor Roushwas appointed co-Chair of the Life Sci-

ence Commission by President LeeBollinger. He is co-Chair with ProfessorHuda Akil of the Medical School. Thecharge of this committee is to assess thestrengths and weaknesses in the area ofLife Sciences at Michigan, both in re-search and in the education of students. It is also charged with formulating a planas to how Michigan can become one ofthe leading academic centers for the studyand application of the life sciences.Rousch and his colleagues are hard atwork developing strategies for achievingthese goals.Professor Roush’s current research in-terests focus on the stereocontrolled syn-thesis of stereochemically complex natu-ral products, and on the design and de-velopment of new reactions and syn-thetic methods. New ventures in thelaboratory focus on the design and syn-thesis of oligosaccharides as site selec-tive DNA binding agents, and inhibitorsof cysteine proteases isolated from im-portant human pathogens.Professor Roush continues to serve on anumber of boards including the editorialboards of Organic Reactions, Encyclo-pedia of Reagents for Organic Synthesis,Organic Synthesis; as well as serving onthe Board of Directors for Organic Reac-tions. In 1998, he was the invited lec-turer at the Heterocycles Gordon Con-ference in Rhode Island, the Natural Prod-ucts Gordon Conference in New Hamp-shire, and the University of Colorado-Syntex/Roche Symposium on OrganicSynthesis in Colorado. Later this year hewill assume the role of Associate Editorof the “Journal of the American Chemi-cal Society”.Additionally, Professor Roush served theDepartment on various committees in-cluding the Executive Committee andthe UM/Parke-Davis Symposium Orga-nizing Committee and was coordinatorof the organic chemistry cluster. Cur-rently, he is the research advisor to 18

graduate students and six postdocs. Hetaught his first course at Michigan, “Ad-vanced Organic Chemistry,” in the winterterm. This fall term he will teach his firstundergraduate course at Michigan, “Struc-ture and Reactivity.” All in all, it was avery busy and productive year for Profes-sor Roush.

Graduate StudentMs. Susan Barker is an up and comingresearcher who has won numerous awardsand honors. In the past year, Susan re-ceived the ACS Analytical Chemistry Fel-lowship for the 1998-99 academic year.In addition, she received the Horace H.

Rackham Graduate School PredoctoralFellowship for the 1998-99 academic year.Susan also received a Sloan Summer Fel-lowship for 1998. She received the KenanAward at a Union Carbide symposium inApril 1998 (see Graduate Program Newsfor write-up). She received the first prizefor the best student presentation at theANACHEM (Analytical Chemistry)Meeting, in Detroit in November of 1997.

She received much recognition for pub-lishing work on the first optical biosensorfor the biomedical detection of nitric ox-ide (has been found recently to play ahighly important role in brain cell trans-

temporary Challenges in Molecular Medi-cine sponsored by Parke-Davis Pharma-ceutical Research. This year the focus ofthe symposium was on research at thechemistry-biology interface. Guest speak-ers included Prof. Stuart Schreiber(Harvard), Prof. Ralph Hirschmann (U. ofPennsylvania), Prof. Andrew Myers (Cali-

fornia Institute of Technology), and Prof.Paul Wender (Stanford U.).The Bachmann Lecture was presented thisyear by Yoshito Kishi (Harvard) and theWillard Lecture speaker was Csaba G.Horvath (Chem. Eng., Yale). All the special named seminars were at-tended by many throughout the year. It is

very exciting to bring new ideas and re-search developments to the Departmentthrough seminars, symposia and lectures. The Department is able to host these eventsthrough funds from endowments and gen-erous corporate and individual gifts. Theseresources are essential to sustain a vitalseminar program.

Larry W. Beck , Assistant ProfessorAnalytical NMR Spectroscopy ofMaterials; Zeolite CatalysisPh.D., Texas A&M UniversityFundamentally, our objective is to under-stand the relationship between chemicalstructure and the physical properties ofbulk materials through spectroscopic mea-surements. Our specific focus is to inves-tigate the complex physical propertiesthat affect heterogeneous catalysis by ap-plying solid-state NMR. Inorganic oxidecatalysts, in particular zeolites, are ourprimary interest. Zeoli tes aremicroporous, crystalline solids used ex-tensively by the chemical industry as cata-lysts and adsorbents.

The problems that we study are di-rectly relevant to the chemical industry.Chemical systems include acid-catalyzedoligomerization, bimolecular addition re-actions and transition-metal catalyzedpartial-oxidation of hydrocarbons. Whilemany successful processes employ zeo-lite catalysts, very little is known abouthow these catalysts work. Our researchstrives to understand how catalyst struc-ture relates to performance. Once thecatalytic mechanism is understood thenthe catalytic materials can be redesignedfor optimum performance.

We are developing and applying so-phisticated NMR spectroscopic tech-niques in order to investigate heteroge-neous catalysis. Importantly, the cata-lysts are investigated under reaction con-ditions using in situ, high-resolution NMRmethods. This enables us to learn howthe catalyt ic process changes thematerial’s local structure and in turn how

the structure affects catalytic performance.NMR is the best technique to monitormany dynamic surface processes occur-ring within the NMR time-window, msecto sec.

The problem-solving approach of thisresearch is also multi-disciplinary. Ourresearch involves technically demandingNMR measurements and requires someinstrument design and modification. Ad-ditionally, the pulsed-NMR experimentsare constantly evolving in order to opti-mize the measurement. Our efforts tounderstand surface-mediated organictransformations has led us into cutting-edge physical-organic chemistry. Thesesurface reactions are different from gas orsolutionphase reactions and often theempirical rules of traditional chemistrydo not apply. Materials synthesis is alsoan integral part of our research, since wedesign and synthesize the catalyst for eachproject. This enables the greatest degreeof flexibility and control over the struc-tural properties we want to study.

Edwin Vedejs, Moses GombergProfessor of Chemistry, OrganicChemistryPh.D., University of WisconsinOur work is designed to develop an un-derstanding of conceptual, stereochemi-cal, mechanistic, and preparative aspectsof organic synthesis. All Ph.D. studentsin the group become involved in the

mission and is implicated in medicationsfrom the heart drug nitroglycerin toViagra). Ms. Barker’s research has re-sulted in many first author publicationsincluding “Fiber Optic Nitric Oxide Se-lective Biosensors”, “Nitric and Chlo-ride Selective Fluorescent Nan-Optodesand In Vitro Application to Rat Concep-tuses” in Analytical Chemistry. Susan, inher copious free time, enjoys oil paintingand is active in church functions. Shehopes to find a research position in agovernment or industrial lab. Her hus-band, Scott, is a graduate student in Elec-trical Engineering.

Undergraduate StudentMr. Andrew Haidle (Chemistry, Cow-ard) authored honors theses in both Cel-lular & Molecular Biology and Chemis-try in preparation for the PhD program inorganic chemistry at Harvard. In Prof.James Coward’s lab he attempted thesynthesis of B-fluoro L-threonine deriva-tives for incorporation into a peptide

which is to be used to investigate themechanism of the enzyme oligosaccharyltransferase. Goldwater Scholar, LubrizolScholarship, National Starch Fellowshipand American Institute of ChemistsChemistry Award are among his honors. In addition, he was awarded a Hertz Foun-dation Fellowship for five years of gradu-ate study at Harvard (about twenty aregive nationally).

construction of complex target structuresto learn the strategies and logistics ofmultistep synthesis. The targets can benatural products derived from nitrogen-containing heterocycles, but they can alsobe complex unnatural heteroelement (bo-ron, nitrogen, phosphorus, etc. ) contain-ing molecules that have been designed toserve as catalysts for enantioselectivereactions. We use total synthesis as achallenging testing ground for the funda-mental issues that are under study in ourgroup, and as an extraordinary tool fortraining that teaches logical analysis andpractical mechanistic thinking as well aspreparative chemistry. Targets are care-

fully chosen to combine the investiga-tion of several fundamental questions inconnection with a specific structural fam-ily and to provide a diverse experiencefor group members. In some cases, ourprojects encounter biologically interest-ing activity and collaborative screeningefforts, but our principal focus is on thechemistry and on fundamental questions. The ideal synthesis project in our grouptargets a substance that is needed for aspecific purpose, and addresses conceptsthat have lasting value beyond the spe-cific family of targeted structures.

Recent studies have focused on theinvestigation of reagents and catalysts

based on heteroelements and phase isola-tion technology, the exploration ofstereogenic heteroatoms as sites wherestereochemical information may be tem-porarily stored, and on a variety of meth-ods for enantioselective synthesis (anionprotonation; acylation and alkylation ofchiral or prochiral nucleophiles; parallelkinetic resolution; configuration controlusing crystallization methods). In thearea of synthetic methodology, we havebeen especially interested in the activa-tion of sensitive heterocycles for bondformation. Advances on this topic arecurrently featured in our total synthesisprojects.

The American Chemical Society Stu-dent Affiliates Chapter have received aUniversity of Michigan LeadershipAward for being an Outstanding StudentOrganization. Out of over 60 nomina-tions, they were one of only five studentorganizations to receive this award, andthe only one to be associated with anacademic department. The award recog-nizes their efforts to revitalize their Chap-ter over the past year. They have beenparticularly effective in their efforts tobring chemistry into the classroom withtheir outreach program to local schools.

Growing from almost zero to morethan sixty active members in less than ayear the University of Michigan Ameri-can Chemical Society Student AffiliateChapter is a success story about revitaliz-ing a struggling chapter. Innovative of-ficer positions, increased delegation ofauthority, and the courage to try newideas created a special chemistry in thegroup. In order to encourage all membersto be creative and reach their full poten-tial, the officers stressed, “Dream an out-standing activity, and everyone will makeit happen.” This organization is the resultof dreams. The co-chairs of the Chapterthis past year were Jonathan Irish andSusan Blum.

UndergraduateHorizons

Our Chemistry and Biochemistrygraduates pursue a number of differentcareer paths: graduate school, MD/PhDprograms, industrial internships, medi-cine, public health or employment inindustry are a few examples. Some ofthis year’s graduates are highlightedbelow. For 1997-98 chemistry degreestotaled thirty-two, biochemistry hadthirty-seven, with seven students con-centrating in both programs. This is justa small sample of our outstanding stu-dents.

Karl Granskog (Chemistry,Townsend) found a niche in Professor

Leroy Townsend’s group doing researchon triazines and their attachment to sugarbases. He worked there for two yearsgaining valuable experience which helpedhim obtain a position at Pfizer, Inc., inresearch and development.

Sajida Jackson (Biochemistry &Chemistry, Cordes) will work towards amaster’s degree in epidemiology at theUniversity of Michigan School of PublicHealth. Her research in Prof. EugeneCordes’ lab was to design highly potentand specific inhibitors of purine nucleo-side phosphorylase.

Rahul Kohli (Biochemistry, Massey)will pursue medicine and research throughthe MD/PhD program at Harvard. Rahulhas been recognized nationally as aGoldwater scholar, and the departmentawarded him a National Starch Scholar-ship and the American Institute of Chem-ists Biochemistry Award.

Jason Pontrello (Chemistry, Penner-Hahn) has pursued an industrial intern-ship at Warner Lambert before attendinggraduate school next year. His chemistryhonors thesis, under Prof. James Penner-Hahn, is entitled “Investigations of theManganese Catalase Enzyme from Lacto-bacillus Plantarum.”

Sarah Reybuck (Chemistry,Rasmussen) completed her degree in sevensemesters, allowing her time to pursueresearch in Germany for eight monthsbefore attending Stanford this fall. Shewrote an honors thesis entitled “Synthesisand Characterization Mono-anil Deriva-tives of Diaminomaleonitrile and VinylicMonomers and Polymers from 4,5-dicyano-2-vinylimidazoles.” She receiveda freshman Sokol fellowship, a Schaefferscholarship, and the ACS Huron ValleySection Outstanding Leadership Award.

The Department of Chemistry celebratedits 10th year as a host for the ResearchExperiences for Undergraduates (REU)Site Program, funded through the Na-tional Science Foundation (NSF). Underthe direction of Professor Brian P.Coppola, this summer’s REU programsupported the participation of eight un-dergraduate students. Participants werechosen from a competitive pool of 200applicants. Final selections were basedon academic achievement, letters of rec-ommendation, and interest in research.Students were assigned separately to on-going research groups and worked withfaculty, post-docs, and graduate students, taking part in multidisciplinary researchprojects, workshops, and technical pre-sentations to obtain a better understand-ing of the research experience.Students encountered first-hand how ba-sic research is conducted, practicing avariety of skills needed as a researcher, including proposal and report writing, investigative studies, conducting experi-ments, analyzing data, and presentingtheir findings. Other activities includedan industrial site visit, safety and scien-tific seminars, lunch meetings, and socialfunctions that were organized to facili-tate interaction among the visiting under-graduates, and with other REU host sitesin Michigan. BEFORE 1940

Milton C. Kloetzel (BS 1934, PhD 1937,Bachmann/Gomberg) writes that he alsobegan his dissertation research with Prof.Gomberg, who retired before he was fin-ished, so his Research Director of recordwas Prof. Bachmann. He remained atMichigan for a year then had short ap-pointments on the faculties of Harvardand Depauw Universities.
