University of Minnesota Display & Trial Garden 2010 Flower Trials
Number of Cultivars
The trial garden contained 394 cultivars of annual
flowers. Of those cultivars, 88 were grown in
hanging baskets and containers
Planting Date in Display Garden
Started planting on May 25 and completed on June
2.
Growing Season Weather Summary
The 2010 growing season, (frost free), was 159
days, (average is 144) with the last spring frost on
May 9 and a light fall frost on October 16. Rainfall
between May 1 and September 30 was 22.05 inches,
6.2 inches above normal. September temperatures
were below normal, May, through August were
above normal. During this same period there were
only 6 days above 90 degrees.
Fertilization
All planting media contains Nutricote 13-13-13,
100 day fertilizer. Greenhouse plants received one
application of Superthrive vitamins and hormone
treatment before spring transplant. Each flowerbed
received an application of 19-19-20 fertilizer prior
to planting the site. Each flowerbed received
additional applications of General Purpose 20-10-20
liquid foliar fertilizer once every month during the
growing season. Hanging basket and container
plants were fertilized directly after transplant into
containers and then bi-weekly with water soluble
20-10-20 peat lite.
Irrigation
Annuals are watered as needed throughout the
season with overhead irrigation.
Greenhouse Growing Problems
All greenhouse plants received a plant shield drench
prior to transplant into growing containers. Minor
incidence of fungus gnats, aphids, spider mites, and
thrips occurred throughout the season. Insect
control was achieved through the use of Preclude
TR, Attain TR, and Orthene. Containers and
hanging baskets received an application of
marathon granular insecticide at transplant into
permanent containers.
Disease Problems
Some chlorosis on select petunias and Calibrachoa.
Pest control
Deer scram granular was applied for deer and rabbit
control on a biweekly application in the display
garden. Liquid fence deer repellent was applied
twice as a rotation.
Herbicide Use, Weed Removal
The herbicide XL2G was applied right after
transplanting in display garden and again in late
August and incorporated with irrigation.
Mechanical and hand weeding was applied as
needed.
Growth Retardants
Florel growth retardant was applied twice to seeded,
zonal and ivy geraniums. The sprays were at a rate
of 350 ppm or 35 mls per one gallon of water. The
first application was made 10 days after transplant
with the second application made 10 days later.
Deadheading
Geraniums were deadheaded to maintain clean
appearance and promote flowering. All other
annuals were deadheaded as needed.
Events
Major events at the University of Minnesota West
Central Research and Outreach Center included
Hands-On-Horticulture, April 17, Four Summer
Fun in the Garden Educational Events, Horticulture
Night, July 29, Fall Horticulture Workshop, August
26, Recognition Reception, September 7, and
Children’s Garden Field Day, September 27, 2010.
Numerous tours were given during the growing
season to Master Gardeners, senior groups,
professional groups, and garden clubs. During
these events annual flowers were highlighted as part
of these tours.
