CHAMBER CHOIR

e Chamber Choir is cotnprised of students) faculty and the community at large. armed in 1975, the choir has played a key role in the development of choral music in

he community through frequent concerts and clinics at the School of Mu ic and at arious other venues throughout the province. The choir has represented . e"\vfoundland and Memoria University in tours throughout Canada and served as

adian ambassadors in two British tours and their highly successful appearance in e international choral event, Festival 500, in 1997.

nder the direction of its urrent co~ductor, Dr. Douglas Dunsmore, the choir has n the National Music Festival's City of Lincoln Award for mixed choirs, placed

rst it the Adult Chamber Choir category of the prestigious CBC Amateur Choir _ ompetition {1980), and was a finalist in the Mixed Choir category in 1990, 1994,

996, and 1998. The choir has two recordings under founding conductor, Dr. D. F. ook: Winter>s Gone.-and Past and MUN Chamber Choir at Exeter Cathed1·al on the aterloo label. In December 1996 the choir released a new CD, TOUR ,95, in

onjunction with an Eastern Canadian tourwi h two other MUN performing groups, Chamber Orchestra and the Brass Quintet.

As part of the university-'s Golden Jubi ee celebrations in 1975, the Memorial . University Siudent Glee Club a,nd the St. J<?h11's Extension. Choir combined to festival choir, under the direction of D. F. ~ook, for a performance -of Haydn-'s Nelson Mass.-'-' This new- choir was so successful that it: w-as decided to keep this combination of student and community singers as a universit:j choral society, u the rtame of the Festival Choir. __ The choir is dedicated to the performance of works for choir and orchestra. Members are selected by, audition from Me.tnorial University and the surrounding community. ...

The choir has aiso been ~nvolved in performance of major works in collaborati the ewfoundland Symphony Orchestra and other university and community instrumental and choral groups.

Under current conductor Dr. Douglas Dunsmore, the 100-voice choir was awa City of Lincoln Trophy as the outstanding adult choir in the 1984 Canadian ...._, ... '-&.:l·~ Festival Competition. The choir gave the best performance in ~the large choir cat in the prestigious 1988 CBC Amateur Choir competition.
