Message from the Chairman As this is my last letter as your Chairman, l hope members

won’t mind me looking back over my last three years. From the start, it quickly became clear that the Trust were going to have to make changes to its Constitution to accommodate the rapid growth of the movement, and these would have a significant impact on the operation of our U3A. Thankfully these turned out to be not as onerous as first thought and since their implementation at our last AGM we are now beginning to see the benefits of the improved governance. By constantly improving the membership offering, our U3A has been able to give members the opportunity to hear an increasingly diverse range of speakers, visit exciting new places, enjoy exploring new interests and forge long lasting friendships. In no other U3A during the last year could you have met a potential World Water Speed record holder, chatted with a serving

Beefeater, learned about the Horncastle Horse Fair and begun lessons to pass the Advanced Driving Test! I am proud that we have been able to offer all this and still maintain our membership subscription at £15 - still one of the lowest in the county.

Finally, l would like to thank everyone who has made and continues to make Horncastle U3A, in my opinion, the best in Lincolnshire. Richard

Editor’s Note:

I am sure that the Committee and wider Membership are appreciative of the hard work and effort that Richard and Chrisandra have put into making Horncastle U3A the success that it is. This (voluntary) hard work entailed attending many Meetings away from Horncastle, and many hours of administration coupled to organising the monthly Stanhope Hall gatherings. We wish them well, with their newly acquired “leisure time”, and trust that they will be in attendance at our future events.

Reading Group 2 Some members concentrated on the book we were discussing, others concentrated on eating cake. No names mentioned, but empty plates could be an indication.... ! Seriously, everyone had something to say about “THE ANGEL AND THE CAD”, a non-fiction account of a very wealthy lady, Catherine Tylney Long, and absent members on holiday kindly jotted down their thoughts for us to discuss.

Group Leader: Sylvia Knight – 01507 525028

IMPORTANT NOTE

Regrettably the Social Laughter Group has been suspended for the foreseeable future due to insufficient enthusiasm and interest shown. I may give it another try in the Spring when the weather improves, so there will not be any more meetings until advised.

The HIKERS One day, Joe, Bob and Dave were hiking in a wilderness area when they came across a large, raging, violent river. They needed to get to the other side, but had no idea of how to do so. Joe prayed to God, saying “Please God, give me the strength to cross the river”. Poof !! God gave him big arms and strong legs and he was able to swim across the river in about two hours. Seeing this, Bob prayed to God, saying “Please God, give me the strength and tools to cross this river. Poof ! God gave him a rowing boat and he was able to cross the river in about 1 hour. Dave saw how this worked out for his friends – so he also prayed to God, saying “Please God, give me the strength and the tools, and the intelligence to cross the river. Poof ! God turned him into a woman. She looked at the map, hiked upstream a couple of hundred yards, then walked across the bridge !

The joy of reading

I Opened a Book

“I opened a book and in I strode. Now nobody can find me.

I’ve left my chair, my house, my road, my town and my world behind me.

I’m wearing the cloak, I’ve slipped on the ring. I’ve swallowed the magic potion.

I’ve fought with a dragon, dined with a king And dived in a bottomless ocean.

I opened a book and made some friends. I shared their tears and laughter

And followed their road with its bumps and bends, To the happily ever after.

I finished my book and out I came. The cloak can no longer hide me.

My chair and my house are just the same. But I have a book inside me”

Julia Donaldson (famed for “The Gruffalo” – “The Stick Man”)

Christmas exhibition of the Applique & Creative Writing Groups

For the last U3A meeting of 2018, the applique group displayed a variety of hand stitched pieces created by the members over the course of the year. The collection included wall hangings, cushion covers, bed scarves and table runners. We ended the year with a lovely Christmas table centre. The New Year’s sessions will start with the group creating a beautiful wall hanging depicting three appliqued flower circles in the Baltimore quilt style. On a second table was displayed a collection of items stitched using the English paper piecing method. As the name suggests, the work involves folding fabric over paper shapes which are then stitched together to form gorgeous designs suitable for a myriad of projects. This method of creating items is one that was first used many centuries ago as a means of being thrifty and using up scraps of cloth and pieces of old clothing to make into something useable. February will see the start of this new group. Both applique and paper piecing use small amounts of fabric, both are portable and can be stitched whilst sitting watching TV to produce wonderful items which will be cherished. (Contact Ann Duncan 01507 527723) Creative Writing for Pleasure Group

Members of the "Creative Writing for Pleasure Group" submitted a short piece of poetry or prose for the display at the main meeting in December. Subject ranged from, Jelly Babies, old photographs, fashion faux pas, ghostly happening to memories of WW1.

CONGRATULATIONS - CONGRATULATIONS - CONGRATULATIONS Congratulations to Pam Browne on her surprise presentation for passing the Advanced Motorists Driving Test. (Pam’s comment) What a surprise! I knew I would be receiving a certificate at some point after passing the Advanced Motorist Driving test in November but I had no idea it would happen at a U3A meeting. I had 12 driving sessions leading up to the test itself last year. Ashley Behan, one of the

speakers from the Lincoln Branch of IAM Roadsmart at the U3A January meeting, had been my observer for all those trips and taught me most of what I needed to know. He also removed of some of the bad habits I had acquired. Like all candidates, I was also given a swish handbook to help me learn the driving system recommended by IAM Roadsmart, and I bought the latest issue of The Highway Code. Gosh, don't things change in 50 years! Quite a few members showed an interest at the end of the meeting in taking a free taster drive. I hope they go on to take the course and the test. I found the whole experience extremely interesting and worthwhile, even the test itself. My examiner was a police officer in a Metropolitan Police traffic unit and, like Ashley, calmly reassuring and helpful throughout. If I can do it, anyone can do it (but then some of you will have been thinking that already, I expect...)

(Residents can now rest easy knowing that Horncastle roads will be a lot safer now !!)

“The Bookworms” Reading Group Three

Our little group of six continues happily, with the same members coming every month. We don’t always all finish a book. Sometimes someone gets so far and then gives up, usually because they don’t like the subject, but even that is matter for discussion, not all of us having the same taste. I sometimes think we should actually be a discussion group because we always end up going off at a tangent and actually having some very interesting and stimulating discussions that are nothing to do with that month’s book! I guess that in that sense we aren’t a very disciplined lot, but hey, it’s about enjoying literature and getting together to talk. That can’t be bad can it ?

The Creative Photography Group’s subject for last month was Glass. The results, shown to a full meeting, were first class. Glass was a theme producing a variety of excellent results. Each photographer is able to produce images in their own style, and edit them as they wish. The aim of the group, as the name suggests, is to be creative and this month’s photographs certainly covered that brief. For February’s meeting the group have been asked to produce photographs to a loose theme of ‘Makes me smile” or “Makes my day’. This sounds like a satisfying challenge.

Financial Forum Group

For many people, looking at one’s personal position is something to be postponed until a tomorrow which never comes. Finance is full of jargon, smart financial salesmen and is often simply too complicated. With financial advisers now charging hundreds of pounds hourly, it is not surprising that many just put off the evil day to review one’s financial affairs. If this is where you are, or if simply you just want to learn a bit more about personal financial issues in a friendly and non- threatening way, you may wish to come along to the U3A Financial Forum which meets on the second Thursday of each month in the Stanhope Hall. During the last year, the Forum discussed many and varied issues, including pension and annuities, will preparation, powers of attorney, the provision and cost of care, financial terminology, investments, funeral policies and housing. The format of the meetings is a brief presentation, followed by group discussion. Much of the value of the discussion is the sharing of experiences by the members- there is so much life experience in us all to share. In the coming year, we will, for the second year construct a “ghost” share portfolio where all members submit a share choice (no experience required) and we track this through the year. In 2018 we actually beat the overall share market as indicated by the FT-SE100 Index! We shall also have discussions on Brexit, the Budget, real assets, smart phones and their uses, peer to peer lending and how to invest. We also like to respond to specific issues which members like to raise.

The Croquet Group

The start of our croquet season is fast approaching. Our first session at Woodhall Spa Croquet Club will be on Monday 8 April 2-4pm. There will be a list for new and existing members to put their names down at the March meeting. As we have limited spaces please make sure your name is on the list rather than appearing at the Club without giving notice. Croquet is an enjoyable game and can be played at different levels. We aim

to enjoy ourselves whilst playing within the rules but we do not take ourselves too seriously. Beginners are most welcome. Sessions cost £4 which is paid to Woodhall Spa Croquet Club for the use of their lawns and equipment. We play fortnightly throughout the season. If you are unable attend the March meeting and would like to come along

please email me: [email protected] Pauline Donner 01507 622741 Bowls Group (New Members are Welcome) It is not long now to the start of the new Season for Outdoor Bowls. This takes place at the rear of the Admiral Rodney Hotel on Friday mornings during the Season. Let us hope that 2019 will be as successful as last year, when the weather was so kind to us. Commencement date to be announced in due course – or contact Kathy or Colin Fisher, 01507 523941 for more details. Playing Golf at Woodhall Spa

The first weekly golf sessions of the New Year on the Woodhall Spa Club Par

3 Academy course have proved to be a particularly frustrating time for some in our little group. It very quickly became evident that lack of practice was affecting final scores and it has taken sage advice from Neil Harvey, just returned from national coaching duties, to improve our game. The two members of our group who have won rounds with the lowest nett scores are Chrisandra D’Arcy and Stefan Urbanowicz who have been the worthy winners of magnificent fluorescent golf

balls. With the lowest overall score for the month Stefan also was awarded the Star Player trophy.

Thoughts of U3A by Ken Argent – (Member of Creative Writing Group)

Every first Tuesday of the month – you can see them all arrive From 50 years onward, and very much alive Some are broad on the shoulders, and some lower down But plenty of smiles, and rarely a frown – at the U3A Some come because they are quite keen Others come to get away – from the washing machine Some like the Speaker, and listen with intent While others fall asleep – a rest, heaven sent - at the U3A Some lead Groups, giving up their time for the lassies and lads All devoted experts, in their particular fads You can apply Applique, or just ring the Bells Topical discussion – to give Brexit hell – at the U3A Appreciate music, or explore a church Learn of Financial savings, or just have some mirth Have a Stroll, or do five or nine miles – feel good all around Then join the Supper or Lunch club to put on some pounds – at the U3A There’s Reading and Writing, and Gardening for pleasure Tennis – Bowls – Croquet – History and other things you treasure Genealogy and Photography – Poetry and Prose But “what is the above” ? – who knows ! - at the U3A. Exploring Churches Group Members interested in joining Contact [email protected]

Lichfield Cathedral Mathew Flinders Our programme for 2019 is being finalised and will, include visits mostly to Lincolnshire churches but with one venture into another part of the country. This year's coach trip, on Tuesday 18th June, will be to Lichfield Cathedral, where we will be given a guided tour. There is room on the coach for other Honcastle U3A members to sign up for and they will be able to enjoy a few hours in the lovely city of Lichfield. Also, there may be some spare places on the guided tour. More details will be given at future monthly general meetings. One of our more local visits this year will feature a Lincolnshire hero and the church where he once worshipped – St Mary and the Holy Rood in Donington, near Spalding. The hero is Matthew Flinders, celebrated navigator and cartographer, born in Donington in 1774, who completed three voyages of the southern oceans before being captured by the French and held captive on Mauritius for six years. He is most famous for leading the first circumnavigation of Australia and for charting much of the continent's enormous coastline. Another visit is a return trip to Benington All Saints, a magnificent fenland church, to see how much has changed, thanks to the £2.4 million lottery grant since we visited two years ago, when work was about to begin. It has already won a national heritage award for the Best Historic Rescue. Other visits will include Holton cum Beckering All Saints and Snarford St Lawrence, both housing rare and spectacular features, and the only church in the country dedicated to St Cornelius, at Linwood.

Full programmes have been sent out to all Group members.

London Trip

The first trip of the year will be to London running on 20th March, picking up from Horncastle Market place at 09.00 and dropping off in central London just by the London Eye. This drop off point has been selected as it affords easy walking distance from: Houses of Parliament, Whitehall, London Eye, Florence Nightingale Museum, British Museum, National Gallery, National Portrait Gallery, Cabinet War Rooms, Golden Hind, Haywood Gallery, Tate Modern, Tube Stations and Bus Stops and many more attractions. The coach will return to Horncastle from the same spot at 19.00 arriving back in Horncastle at about 22.30.

The coach will be making comfort stops and is equipped with a toilet.

Cost £15 per person Please note: Places can only be secured by payment being made along with a completed booking form to our Treasurer, Graham Hutton email: [email protected] All the trip details are on our website www.u3asites.org.uk/horncastle from which you can download the booking form and map.

Booking forms will also be available at the March Meeting. NB: Seat vacancies are beginning to run low now – so to ensure your place, on this very moderately priced outing – MAKE YOUR BOOKING NOW !! In the Future We have received enquiries about organising trips to Hull, Norwich, Coventry and Milton Keynes (Bletchley Park) to date. To enable these outings to go ahead we need members to organise and lead them, so if you have some knowledge of these destinations or just want to go back to a favourite spot please approach the Committee.

Red Cross First Aid Course The second Red Cross first aid course again proved popular with members even attracting three budding first aiders from Woodhall Spa U3A.

After a short introduction, our tutor Jeanette Taylor, began the course by demonstrating the latest method of CPR. Everyone was then given the opportunity to practice this technique on the model. It was only after just a short time of chest pumping that we came to appreciate it is nowhere near as easy as it looks on ‘Casualty’! After the break Jeanette then demonstrated how to use the latest model of defibrillator. She explained that the defibrillator automatically analyses the patient’s condition, issuing verbal instructions to the user on how to proceed and so showing that it could be operated by even an inexperienced

individual. We were informed that the latest research had found that the defibrillator is 75% effective at reviving a patient as opposed to only 6% when using chest compressions.

The course ended with a short session on how to recognise a patient suffering from a heart attack or stroke followed by a detailed explanation of the F.A.S.T. protocol. At the end of the morning everybody agreed that they had throughly enjoyed themselves and had acquired sufficient confidence and knowledge to potentially save a life.

Edible Gardening Group – visit to Mortons

Edible Gardening Group - first meeting of 2019 The Edible Gardening Group first meeting of 2019 kicked off with a visit to Mortons Publishers, who produce the Kitchen Garden magazine. We were met by Terry Clark, one of the Directors who arranged our visit, and took us to the boardroom where Steve Ott, Editor, and Emma Rawlings Deputy Editor, gave us potted history of the Kitchen Garden Magazine. After tea and biscuits Emma went through some newer, and not so new vegetables that we might be growing in the future. There followed a question and answer session after which, on leaving, we all received a goody bag. All group members enjoyed the meeting as did some potential new ones

Visiting Gardens Group After a very dry and hot gardening year, 22 of us ended with a visit to Johnsons Garden Centre, followed a lovely lunch at Boston College. The 2019 visiting year starts in February (weather permitting) with a visit to Saxby where Snowdrops - Aconites – Helebore’s and Winter shrubs etc will give us a good show. This visit will incorporate a planning meeting for future trips, with lunch. Several potential venues have been proposed to get programmed for the year.

Lincolnshire could have its own answer to the ‘Angel of the North’ if plans get the go ahead.

The trust behind a proposal to build a giant sculpture of a Lancaster bomber at the gateway to the county is keeping its fingers crossed that it gets the go ahead from planners.

The aim is that the sculpture will sit high on a hill by the side of the A46, between Newark and Lincoln, to give the impression it is flying as motorists enter Lincolnshire.

It is hoped that the sculpture will be in similar size to the Angel of the North.

The sculpture would include a support which could be temporarily clad with poppies each November (as

shown in the artist’s impression above).

The site chosen is particularly fitting, because the original Lancaster that the memorial is based on crashed in woodland close by. Lancaster R5689 (VN-N) crash landed on September 18, 1942, as it limped home from a mission. Five members of its crew perished in the crash.

The Bomber County Gateway Trust has a website providing more details and ways to donate to the project at http://www.bombergatewaytrust.co.uk

January Meeting – Institute of Advanced Motorists presentation The I.A.M ‘Roadsmart’ presentation at our January monthly meeting was clearly a big hit with members that inspired a staggering 45% of the audience to book a ‘Taster Session’. This has been followed up by seven members signing up for Advanced Driving lessons. The secretary of the Iocal branch of the I.A.M., Ashley Behan, commented “that this has been one of the highest number of applications for lessons arising from any of their recent presentations”.

? is this truly a part of Lincoln’s History ?? (Ed.) The little-known patron saint of Lincoln, Saint Eepe, was a native Celt, who converted to Christianity in the 3rd Century AD. He would make the journey from the Brayford Pool, on foot up the steepest part of the rise to the uphill area three and four times a day, as a penance, and to help with the building of a new church. The path he took became venerated on his death, and named after him as “Saint Eepe’s Hill” and although now misspelled and mispronounced, is commonly known as St Eep Hill !

A Few Words from The Editor ([email protected])

Spring is upon us once more, and attention turns to tidying the garden up after the Winter

months. No doubt many have been frustrated by the Chafer grub invasion that has devastated SO many gardens in Horncastle, and the puzzle of whether to re seed or re turf, not knowing whether the little monsters are lying in wait to eat the roots again!! Only time will tell. Many U3A outdoor activities will be starting again, and ‘some” Group Leaders responded to the Group Co-Ordinator’s, and my request, for details to include in the Newsletter. Regrettably, very few bothered to respond, and those that did not, will need members to make direct contact with them to find out about any planned activities for the coming months. The irritating phenomenon of the mobile phone continues, as if it is a critical activity to living. Welded to hands, or clamped to ears at every opportunity, in every situation, with users oblivious to people or events around them. Whilst they are a useful “mini- computer”, there are more and more dangers to the well- being of young people with social media (“Farce- book” and “Idiot-gram” etc) as a medium for abuse, insults, and even more worrying, leading to some suicides, as several recent news events have shown. Are the advantages of mobiles now overtaken by the disadvantages???

(? How did people ever manage before this mania began?)

The above cartoon from the USA, sums it up VERY accurately.
